This week’s Skate Wars flat gap challenge was one the gnarliest weeks we’ve ever seen. The riding was crazy, with guys pushing the limits of their abilities with ollies over 10 feet long! What started out as a large group of participants eventually dwindled down to three riders: Logan Jansen, Tim Hunter, and Sam Dominguez.

At the 10 foot mark, Tim displayed skating guts that legends are made from: after slamming hard on four attempts, Tim got up, took his shirt off for added motivation (no one wants to slide across concrete on their bare skin) and absolutely blasted a tremendous ollie over the distance marker on his fifth and final attempt! Everyone in attendance was pumped and in awe of this display of focus, technique and sheer bravery.

Logan Jansen eventually took the victory, with a final ollie mark of almost 11 feet! He took home a limited edition, signed and numbered copy of Todd Bratrud’s Creature Girl print for his efforts. Dennis Garcia scored himself a new Vans hat in the beginner group, with an ollie of 4.5 feet! Big shout outs to both of these guys for outstanding skating on what was probably the toughest week in Skate Wars. (more…)

The weather was hot and the skating was hotter! To help beat the 90 degree temp, we brought two flat rails (18” tall and 12” tall) down to Veteran’s Park for round-5 of Skate Wars. Due to the number of participants and differing ability levels we split this challenge into beginner and advanced classes. We did a 15-minute jam session using both rails and these guys threw down! Most contestants utilized the shorter rail but some went all out and tried everything on the tougher 18” rail. We saw lots of tricks being tried, everything from simple backside boardslides to nollie krooked grinds.

From the beginner class, Alex won first place with an end-to-end frontside boardslide on the 12” rail, with Andrew finishing runner-up with a shorter front boardslide.

From the advanced class, Eric Fregoso won first place with a super clean kickflip backside lipslide on the 12” rail, and Cody Darden won runner-up with a feeble grind shuvit out on the 18” rail. Sam Dominguez also deserves a shout-out for a nice 5-0 grind on the 18”rail. Alex and Eric took home a new hat and shades, while both runners-up got hooked up with a new Vans wallet and Osiris power bracelet. (more…)

We had the biggest turnout this week for the manual contest. This 2-part challenge had contestants trying to land their tech-est trick on the manny pad and then try and ride the longest, smoothest manual. A 15-minute jam session on the manual pad had on-lookers oohing and awing at half-cap manuals, kickflip manuals, hardflip manuals, and the eventual winning trick, a 360 flip manual landed by Sam Dominguez. Sam tried countless times to land the trick, getting closer and closer as time was running out. With about 2 minutes left in the session, he landed it perfectly! Talk about clutch skating! Sam scored a Volcom jersey and sticker prize pack for his trick.

Contestants then moved to the front sidewalk to see who could ride the longest manual. Right off the bat, Cody Darden set the pace with a tremendous 150ft+ manual. After a 3-way tie for the lead at the original starting spot, we moved the starting line back 10 feet and the finalists rode one final manual to determine the winner. Joey O’Leary took the victory, manualing a total length of 203ft! Joey took home a Vans OTW t-shirt and a clean pair of Volcom boxers for his ultra-clean manual. (more…)

It was another great competition this week, featuring Skate Dice—a game made popular by the TV show “The Berrics.” The game is a combination of Yahtzee and basketball’s HORSE. Dice are rolled to determine the skate trick and each competitor must land the trick, or be assessed a letter penalty. After five misses, SKATE is spelled and the contestant is out. This game is typically very challenging, with lots of unusual tricks and odd trick variations being attempted. Many of the tricks, contestants have never tried before.

After landing a myriad of tricks, including switch backside kickflips, 360 flips, and nollie heelflips, Eric Fregoso toke the win! This is the second win in a row for Eric, putting him in the lead for overall champion.

Eric scored a matching hat and t-shirt from Dragon Optics for his impressive skateboarding versatility!

There was another good turnout for Skate Wars this week with several contestants and a small crowd that showed up to watch. While some contestants only managed a few flips in a row, Tim Hunter, Eric Fregoso, and John Benney all went the distance until they reached 27 flips.

Then, Eric and John went head-to-head for what seemed like forever, matching each others flips perfectly. Eric was like a machine, with clean kickflip rotation every time. John was more stylish, getting big air and extending his front foot in perfect kickflip form. After what seemed like an eternity, Eric finally won with a total of 58 consecutive kickflips! Big shout outs to these guys. They battled tired legs and worn out shoes for this challenge. After all was said and done, more than 150 kickflips had been landed by all the contestants!

Eric won himself a new pair of Skullcandy headphones, and a matching Skullcandy bandana for his effort. Be sure to join us next week for Skate Dice!

The first round of the Klamath Board Spots Skate Wars! is in the book. Tim Hunter won both contests, boasting a considerable Ollie height of 2 feet, 6 inches, and an incredible hippie jump of 4.0 feet.

Honorable mentions have to go out to Hazi Padilla and Eric Fergoso, who each cleared the 2 foot bar during the Ollie contest.

Hunter scored himself a free deluxe copy of Creature Skateboard’s video, “Hesh Law,” as well as a limited edition, tie-dyed hippy handkerchief from Volcom.

Big thanks to all the participants! Be sure to check out the videos on the KBS YouTube page, and join us next week for the consecutive Kickflip challenge! (more…)
