The Etna Lions varsity football team rebounded from its 42-13 defeat at Lost River the prior week by shredding the Bonanza Antlers 25-2 on Friday night.

It was Bonanza who had the early upper hand when Gaven Decker recorded a sack for a “maybe-it-was-a-safety,” giving the Antlers a 2-0 lead at the end of one quarter. That was their last chance to celebrate.

In the second quarter, Lion quarterback Nick Meyer threw to Lukas Nadig for a 35-yard TD, putting Etna up 6-2 going into the intermission.

Meyer and Nadig combined again for a 44-yard TD strike in the third quarter. Wyatt Finley added an extra point, extending the Lion lead to 13-2. (more…)

West CoastKLAMATH FALLS – The Bonanza Antlers boys varsity basketball team knocked off the Yreka Miners, 40-38, in a first round contest at the Basin Best Basketball Tournament. The game, which had the offensive firepower of a squirt gun—a small squirt gun—was played at Mazama High School on Tuesday afternoon in front of a sparse crowd.

The Miners managed a paltry 14 points in the second half of the contest. Bonanza was only slightly better, with 18 second half points. It was just enough for the Antlers.

Yreka led 9-8 after the first quarter, and 24-22 at the half, but the Antlers took the lead, 34-31, going into the final frame on back-to-back 3-balls by Ryan Stewart.

The Antlers’ Jimmy Gallagher opened up the fourth quarter with a sweet holiday dish to Bruce Cox for a bucket, upping the Bonanza advantage to 36-31. (more…)

ETNA – Under the one bright light at Duncan Field the Etna Lion crowd stood in anticipation as the home team broke from its time out with 35 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. The host Lions were facing a fourth down and goal from the 3-yard-line with the game on the line.

It was win in dramatic fashion or lose in the same.

The whistle blew and the Bonanza Antler defensive line erupted in celebration as they stuffed the Lions once again and took over on downs. Bonanza eventually knelt down for its final offensive play to hang on for the 16-12 win.

Etna was denied for the second time in the game with a first down inside the 5-yard-line. Although the Lions were denied on their final scoring chance, the opportunity would not have happened if it were not for huge plays from Freckman, Rimmer and Parry on setting up the first and goal.

Etna did produce some offensive fireworks. Trailing 9-0, the Lions lit up the score board on the last play of the first half when signal caller Eric Freckman hit junior receiver Colby Rimmer for a 15-yard touchdown. Big runs by Freckman and receptions by Max Detrick put the Lions in position for the Rimmer score.

Despite trailing nearly the entire first half, the Lion defense was nails at times. Senior defensive end, Josh Jordan was a force with three first half sacks and numerous tackles. Taylor Wyatt and Robbie Munson also kept the Antler offense in check with big stops. (more…)
