The Tulelake Honkers remained perfect in the Evergreen League at 6-0 (18-3), with a 61-42 win over the Butte Valley Bulldogs in Dorris on Friday night. The Dawgs, however, did not go quietly. Although the Honkers led 10-9 at the end of the first quarter, they had to come from behind to do so, on a pair of Zac Idrogo freebies with seven seconds left in the opening quarter.

The Honkers led by as many as 12 points in the second quarter, 25-13, but the Bulldogs came back within seven points by halftime via a 7-2 mini-run. Two from the charity stripe by Bulldog John Levesque made it a 10-point game, 25-15, with 2:21 to go until the intermission. A Honker put back by Logan Herman pushed it back to a 12-point advantage, 27-15. Butte Valley’s Gustavo Lopez hit a turn around jumper, 27-17. The final three points of the half were courtesy of a couple of Honker fouls and three free throws by Butte Valley’s Levesque, making it 27-20.

Tulelake opened the second half scoring with buckets from Idrogo and Adam Kandra, to increase its lead to 11 points, 31-20. The Honkers would maintain a double-digit margin for the remainder of the game, on the way to the 61-42 win.

Kandra led all scorers with 27 points, as well as grabbing 17 boards and snagging 7 steals. Max Crawfrod put up 11 points, pulled down 6 rebounds, and had 5 swipes for the Honkers. Danny Banderas added 7 points.

Butte Valley was led by Levesque with 9 points. Andrew Lucitskii contributed 8, and Colten Struble had 7 points.

Tulelake hosts Happy Camp (5-1, 6-5) on Tuesday.

Butte Valley (2-4, 5-13) goes to Dunsmuir (4-2, 12-7) on Tuesday.

The first time the Tulelake Lady Honkers and the Butte Valley Lady Bulldogs met, it took over time to decide the game in Tulelake’s favor, 60-57. On Friday night in Dorris, it appeared that the squads might be headed for another nail-biter. After Butte Valley took an early lead, Tulelake came back to tie the contest, 12-12, at the end of the first quarter. The game remained close going into the intermission, with the Lady Honkers holding a 25-20 lead.

The second half, however, was just about all Lady Honkers. Amanda Madden opened up the third quarter scoring with a freebie, making it 26-20, starting a 10-2 Tulelake run. Cierra Gribble made it 28-20 with two from the charity stripe. Then, Sabrina Gribble dropped in a 3-ball from somewhere around Macdoel, upping the Lady Honker advantage to 31-20. Butte Valley’s Anna Austin interrupted the run, with a hoop at the 4:08 mark, 31-22. Madee Boyd answered with back-to-back buckets, to complete the run, and give Tulelake a 35-22 lead. Tulelake would open up a 14-point gap by the start of the fourth quarter, 41-27.

Consecutive 3-pointers to open the final frame by Lady Bulldogs Paige Porterfield and Ruby Gonzalez, brought Butte Valley back within eight points, 41-33, with 7:09 left to play. That didn’t even phase the Lady Honkers who responded by out scoring the Lady Bulldogs, 23-5, the rest of the way for a convincing 64-38 win.

Boyd led the Lady Honkers with 15 points. Cierra Gribble put up 12, and Maria Chavolla added 11 points.

Butte Valley was led by Gonzalez with 12 points, including three 3-balls. Lydia Hill had 9 points. Haley Reynolds and Paige Porterfield each added five points.

Tulelake sits at the top of the Evergreen League at 6-0, and hosts Happy Camp (3-3) on Tuesday.

Butte Valley (3-3) goes to Dunsmuir (1-5) on Tuesday.

The Tulelake junior varsity boys came away with a 57-45 win. Butte Valley trailed 15-2 early in the 1st quarter, but rallied back to take the lead 24-23 at the half. Tulelake held a 2-point advantage going into the final frame, 32-30.  The Honkers out scored the Bulldogs, 25-15, in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

The Tulelake junior varsity Lady Honkers went home with the 48-24 victory.

The Butte Valley Bulldog boys junior varsity defeated the Lost River Raider JVs 47-32 on Tuesday night in Dorris. The Lady Raider JVs downed the JV Lady Bulldogs, 42-24.

DORRIS – The Lost River Raiders girls and boys teams both notched wins on Tuesday night against the Butte Valley Bulldogs. The Lady Raiders prevailed 54-14. The boys took down the Dawgs, 61-44.

In the girls game, Lost River ran out to a 14-2 lead in the first quarter, and the Lady Bulldogs never recovered. Lost River led 30-6 at the half, 44-12 at the end of three quarters, and cruised to the 54-14 win.

Megan Parks led the Lady Raiders with 19 points. Alexis Turner put up 11, and Danea Swartout added 9 points.

For Butte Valley, Lydia Hill scored 6 points, and Anna Austin had 4.

The boys game was considerably more competitive in the early stages. The Bulldogs went out to a 4-0 lead a pair of buckets by Gus Lopez. Lost River responded with an 11-1 run. With the score tied 5-5, Blake Ireland dropped in a couple of freebies, giving the Raiders a 7-5 lead. Ireland added a hoop, and then Chance Mcaullife stole the ball and went coast-to-coast for a bucket, extending the Raider lead to 11-5, with 1:23 to go in the opening frame. Lost River led 11-6 at the end of the quarter.

After Lost River scored to open the second quarter, back-to-back Lopez baskets made it 13-10. That was as close as the Bulldogs would come, as the Raiders outscored Butte Valley, 19-7 the remainder of the first half, for a 32-17 lead going into the intermission. At the end of three quarters, the Raiders had upped the lead to 18 points, 49-31, on the way to the 61-44 victory.

Ireland led Lost River with 16 points. Luke Birch put up 11, and Mcaullife contributed 10 points.

Lopez led all scorers with 18 points. Andrew Lucitskii dropped in 9, and Tyler Coltrin had 6 points for the Bulldogs.

The Weed Cougars improved to 3-2 on the season with a 57-32 win over the Butte Valley Bulldogs on Monday night in Weed.

The Cougars raced out to a 10-0 lead to open the game. Tommy Haosouphanthong opened the scoring with a hoop. Trevor Shaffer followed with a bucket, and Noah Traylor added a deuce to make it 6-0. Baskets by Josh Rogers and Traylor made it 10-0.

Andrew Lucitskii broke the ice for the Bulldogs with a sweet baseline drive, making it 10-2.

Weed led 18-6 at the end of the first quarter.

The Bulldogs cut the lead to 10 points on a hoop by Colten Struble with 5:05 to play in the half, but that was as close as Butte Valley would come. Weed led 32-16 at the half, and 43-27 after three quarters, going on to win 57-32.

Traylor led all scorers with 20 points. Josh Rogers put up 9 for Weed, and Haosouphanthong added 8 points.

Butte Valley was led by Struble with 9 points, and Lucitskii with 7.

Weed will open the Mt. Shasta Holiday Tournament this Thursday against Yreka (0-3) at 10:00 am.

Butte Valley will be at the Lost River Tournament this weekend.

The Weed Lady Cougars moved to 4-0 on the season with a defensive gem on Monday night in Weed, defeating the two-time D-VI defending champion Butte Valley Lady Bulldogs, 38-13.

The Lady Cougars held the Bulldogs scoreless for over three minutes in the first quarter, and allowed only three points in the opening frame. Offensively, Karene Marshall opened the scoring for Weed with a 3-ball, and then a deuce to give the Lady COugars a 5-0 lead. After Butte Valley’s Kara Porterfield scored, Destiny Jones added a hoop and a freebie to make it an 8-2 lead for Weed. Tyresha Leonard pushed the advantage to 10-2, with a basket. A free throw by Bulldog Lydia Hill made it 10-3 at the end of the quarter.

It as more of the same in the second quarter, as the Lady Cougars allowed just one Butte Valley score, a hoop by Hill, while putting up 12 of their own points. Marshall capped the half with a 3-point play the hard way, to make it 22-5 going at the intermission.

Weed led 33-9 at the end of three quarters and went on to win 38-13.

Marshall led all scorers with 13 points. Tyresha Leonard put up 9 points for Weed.

Kara Porterfield had six of the Bulldogs 13 points.

Weed (4-0) will face considerably stiffer competition this weekend at the Mt. Shasta Holiday Tournament, where they will open with Biggs (4-0) on Thursday at 1:00 pm. Biggs is averaging over 60 points per game, while allowing less than 25 points per game.

Butte Valley will play in the Lost River Tournament this weekend.
