cos-v-butte-v-ball-front.jpgWEED – The College of the Siskiyous Lady Eagles volleyball team now has something in common with Wiley Coyote—both came close, but neither could catch the Road Runner. The Butte College Road Runners (23-3) paid a visit to Weed and went home with a 3-1 win, despite furious comeback attempts by the Lady Eagles.

Set-one was all about Butte, as the Road Runners controlled from start to finish, beating an apparently stunned COS squad 25-13. It looked like it was going to be a short night.

Set-two began in similar fashion, with Butte going up 5-1. COS, however, managed to maintain contact. With a clarity-300.jpgraucous crowd of Eagle football players dominating the cheering section, and trailing 19-14, the Lady Eagles made their move.

A kill by Katie Zauner made it 19-15. Another Zauner rocket cut it to 19-17. An ace by Heather Wicks brought COS to within a single point at 19-18. Butte pushed its lead back to three points at 23-20, but a Laura McMahon kill started a 4-0 run by the Lady Eagles. Next, Amber Franko notched an ace, 23-22. Wicks tied it with a kill, 23-23. And a block by McMahon gave COS its first lead of the match.

Butte regained the lead 25-24, but a pair of kills by Kinzy Towry, including the set-winner, sandwiched around a kill by Zauner gave the Lady Eagles the win 27-25. (more…)

cos-v-feather-river-football-front.jpgWEED – The College of the Siskiyous Eagles opened up Mid-Empire Conference play with a 58-49 win over the Feather River Golden Eagles, on Saturday. While the score might suggest a shootout, it was more like complete and utter domination for the first quarter by COS, and then a wild ride to victory. COS scored 28 points in the opening quarter, Feather River scored 22 in the fourth.

The Eagles drove 64 yards on the opening possession to take a 7-0 lead. The impressive drive included a spectacular one-handed catch by Darius Davis for 37 yards, which set up a 3-yard TD run by Patrick Lunney.

It took the COS defense just two plays to get the ball back wbs-web-generic.jpgin the hands of the offense, when KC Swain recovered a Feather River fumble on the COS 46.

Eagle QB Aqura Brown completed three passes on the short drive—one to Lunney for 13 yards, another to Anthony Young for seven yards, and the TD strike to Young for eight yards. Justin Ecklin added the PAT, making it 14-0, half away through the first quarter.

The Eagle defense stuffed Feather River on its next possession, with Michael Seifert and George Trenton combining on a tackle for a loss of four yards on first down. Steven Butrick came up with a sack for a 3-yard loss, and then had a tackle for a 1-yard loss. Again, the defense gave the offense a short field, with the Eagles setting up shop on the Feather River 48. On third-and-nine, Brown hit Young with a pass for a 47-yard TD. Add in the PAT and it was 21-0, with 2:53 left in the quarter. At that point the question was: how best to describe the Feather River defense…toast or Swiss cheese? (more…)

cos-v-dvc-lassen-4-front.jpgWEED – The College of the Siskiyous Lady Eagles hosted the Diablo Valley College Vikings and Lassen College Cougars, on Saturday. It took the hosts just over an hour per match to clean house and send the Lady Vikings and Lady Cougars packing, with a pair of 3-0 sweeps.

The Lady Eagles beat DVC 25-17, 25-20, and 25-11. Their domination of Lassen was even greater, with wins of 25-15, 25-13, and 25-12.

y-ad-1.jpgAgainst DVC, Kinzy Towry led the attack with 12 kills, and a pair of aces. Laura McMahon had five blocks and four kills. Setter Stephanie Batchelder tipped her way to seven kills. Katie Zauner blocked a pair, and had five kills. Amber Franko joined the party with four kills, two blocks, and an ace. Ashley Spalding notched three aces, two kills, and a block.

COS spread the wealth around against Lassen, with five or more kills by four different players. Megan McMahon had seven kills, with twin sister Laura McMahon nailing five kills, and a block. Zauner had six kills and three blocks. Franko had an ace and five kills. Towry ripped three aces, and had four kills. Spalding had a couple of aces and three kills. cos-v-shasta-neal.jpgWEED – The College of the Siskiyous Eagles scored two touchdowns in the last 2:10 of the game in an attempt to stage a miracle comeback against the Shasta Knights—a comeback that fell one onside kick recovery short. Despite the late fireworks, the Eagles dropped their third straight game.

Eagle QB Aqura Brown threw two TD passes, one each to Darius Davis and Anthony Young. Raymond Neal rushed for two TDs.

The Knights pooched their opening kick off, and COS inexplicably watched the ball bounce around its own 30-yard-line. Shasta recovered and moved the ball to the coffe-break-revised.jpgEagle 5-yard-line, where the COS defense stiffened and forced Shasta to settle for a field goal.

On their second possession, the Knights moved the ball from their own 49 to the COS 17. The Eagle defense came up with another stop when Steven Butrick recovered a fumble.

The Eagles took over on their own 15. Eagle quarterback Aqura Brown and Darius Davis hooked up three times for 51 yards of an 85-yard drive scoring drive, capped off by a 13-yard TD run by Raymond Neal. Brown picked up the 2-point conversion on a keeper, giving COS an 8-3 lead, with 2:41 left in the first quarter. (more…)
