Each school selected their recipient based up on a minimum requirement of a 3.0 gpa, and participation in at least two extracurricular activities. Community service, career choice, and need could also be considered, but were not part of the main selection criteria.

SiskiyouYouth.com scholarships are made possible by the support of the advertisers and sponsors, as well as a portion of each photograph sale. Weed High School was added this year to the list of schools receiving scholarships. The goal is to eventually award a scholarship to a student from each Siskiyou County High School. Schools are added based upon having advertising/sponsorship on SiskiyouYouth.com from that school’s business community.

YREKA – Discovery High School and Yreka Adult School held their graduation on Friday in Miner Gym. Discovery had seven graduates, while Yreka Adult School graduated 12. Several scholarships were also awarded.

Becky Trevino received the Ford Jump Start scholarship, USI Scholarship, and the Don Stensas Memorial Scholarship given by the College of the Siskiyous. Winona Croy was presented the Yreka Elks Lodge Schuttpelz Scholarship, and the Wes Crippen Memorial Scholarship given by SiskiyouYouth.com. Sarah Young received a Ford Jump Start scholarship, and Alex Crippen was recognized as Discovery High School’s Most Improved Student with the Shasta Valley Rotary Scholarship.

Jean Monroe delivered an eloquent Commencement Address, asking the graduates to remember four words: truth, fidelity, integrity, and service. Monroe, a long term substitute teacher at Discovery, told the graduating students to incorporate the attributes that the words represent into their everyday lives.

Discovery principal Dennis Moore, who will be retiring, was congratulated and thanked by staff member Mark O’Conner. Moore is finishing more than a 30 year career with the Yreka Union High School District, with his final year spent at Discovery. Randy Baker will take over as principal at Discovery.

Yreka
Tyler Wolf won the Shot Put with a new PR of 50-09.00. Dylan Weddle took 1st in the Pole Vault (12-06).

Kevin Jorgensen finished 2nd in the 800m (1:58.44), and Dillon Dow took 3rd in the 400m.

Ryan Kennedy was first in the junior varsity Shot Put (48-07.50).

The varsity girls top performances were turned in by Taylor Bruyette with a 4th in the 100m (13.34) , Tina Ballue 4th in the Long Jump (16-03.25), and Carrie Scott 4th in the Shot Put (33-02.50).

Eva Heintz won the JV Discus (102-03) and was third in the Shot Put (33-03.00).

Division-IV
Butte Valley
Kady Porterfield was Butte Valley’s lone champion, winning the Shot Put at 29-04.50. She was also 3rd in the Discus (79-03).

Steven Berengue was tops for the varsity boys, with a 4th place finish in the 200m (26.21). The varsity boys 4×400m Relay Team (Steven Berengue, Fernando Belmontes, Jose Gonzales, Brandon Britton) grabbed a 2nd place medal (4:08.86).

Dunsmuir
Katie McItyre continued to light up the division with 1st place finished in the 100m (14.20) and Long Jump (15-04.50). She also took 2nd in the 200m (29.55) and 3rd in the Shot Put (27-02.75).

Nate Gonzales turned in the best finishes for the varsity boys, with a 2nd in the Triple Jump (39-01.00) and a 5th in the Long Jump (19-06.00).

The JV boys took 2nd as a team. Jeff Rhodes won the Shot Put (43-01.75) and Discus (98-04). Orion McCree won the 200m (25-97) and High Jump (5-02.00).

Tulelake
Miguel Navarro won the varsity boys 200m (25.01). Logan Herman was 3rd in the 300m Hurdles (49.44). The varsity boys took 3rd overall.

Although they had no individual event winners, the varsity girls finished 2nd as a team. Karra Mahan was 2nd in the 100m (14.63), 3rd in the 200m (30.37), and 3rd in the High Jump (4-08.00). Maria Chavolla was 2nd in the Shot Put (27-05.00). Michelle Rupert took 3rd in the Long Jump 14-07.50). Franceska Baley was 3rd in the 100m (14-98).

Recipients

Kayla Emerson, Mt. Shasta High School

Emerson played softball and volleyball this school year, and was the captain of her Shasta Cascade League champion softball team. She was a section leader for the Vocal Jazz Choir. Emerson had one of the highest grade point averages in her class and will be attending St. Mary’s College in the fall.

Jilinda Franklin, Etna High School

Franklin was the Division-III and Shasta Cascade League 3200m champion. She ran cross country and was a member of the SCL champion Lady Lions basketball team. Franklin is also active in FFA and the Catholic Youth Organization. An honor student and class Salutatorian, Franklin will be attending Pacific University.

Andrew Pimentel, Yreka High School

Pimentel played football, basketball, and baseball at YHS. Athletic Director and Vice-principal Chris Harris called Pimentel a “tremendous asset to our campus.” An honor student, he will be attending the College of the Siskiyous.

Alma Villegas, Discovery High School

Villegas will be attending College of the Siskiyous. Among her many achievements at Discovery High School, Villegas nearly single handedly produced the school’s yearbook. According to Principal Marie Caldwell, when everyone else dropped the ball, Villegas picked it up and ran with it.

Siskiyou Youth Scholarships are funded by advertising revenue, particularly from Slide Show Sponsors. It is Siskiyou Youth’s hope to add scholarships for graduating students at Weed, Happy Camp, Dunsmuir, and Butte Valley high schools in the spring of 2010.

Discovery principal Marie Caldwell opened the ceremony by welcoming the crowd of family members, Discovery students, friends, staff members, administrators, and school board members. She then led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Graduating senior Ann Fuchser was the student speaker. After the well spoken Fuchser thanked the Discovery High School staff on behalf of the graduating students, she had a sobering reminder for all of those in attendance—particularly her classmates. Discovery students recently lost a good friend, Tyler Gregg, in a drunk-driving accident.

“Remember what Tyler’s mom, Cookie, told us. Don’t let Tyler’s death be in vain. Learn from his mistake. Don’t drink and drive. Don’t get into a car with a drunk driver,” Fuchser told the audience.

Gregg was a passenger in a van driven by a drunk driver, when he was killed.

Three scholarships were presented to Discovery students. Julia Bernier presented Andrea Carlson the Yreka Host Lions Scholarship. Earl Cox was the recipient of the Schullpelz Scholarship, presented by Jason Huffman. Flora Yeaman received the Peggy Kernohan-Favero Memorial Scholarship from Valerie Herman of the Soroptimist of Yreka.

After Superintendent Mark Greenfield presented and certified the Discovery High School Class of 2008, the school staff and Board of Trustees members handed out the diplomas.
