Dunsmuir

West CoastDUNSMUIR – In between flashes of brilliance, the Dunsmuir Lady Tiger volleyball team showed their youth on Thursday night, as they fell, 3-2, to the Redding Adventist Lady Lumberjacks.

In the first set, it was Tiger brilliance that showed. Katie McIntyre, the lone senior on the squad, pummeled the Lady Jacks with seven kills, taking advantage of sweet setting by sophomore Jessica Hatten.

The set was close early, but with Dunsmuir holding an 11-8 advantage, frosh Chelsea Helms rotated to server and ripped an ace, making the score 12-8. Five serves later, including another ace, it was Lady Tigers 17 – Lady Jacks 8. After Redding Adventist added a couple of points, McIntyre went to work, with four kills in the final eight Lady Tiger points, as Dunsmuir went on to win 25-12. (more…)

coffee-break-b.jpgCOTTONWOOD – Yreka’s Kevin Jorgensen smoked the competition in the 800m race at the North Section CIF championships on Friday at West Valley High School. Jorgensen held a slight lead after the first lap, but pulled a way midway through the second lap, winning in a time of 1:57.04. Red Bluff’s Devin Shoop was second (2:00.80). Jorgensen celebrated with a fist pump upon crossing the finish line, and a huge hug with coach Pam Borg after the medals presentation.

“I was nervous. I thought someone was right behind me. It most have been my shoe laces making noise,” said Jorgensen after being told about his large margin of victory.

Etna’s Emily Loogman and Taylor Lambert from West Valley entered the 300m Hurdles competition as co-favorite. Lambert had the top time in the event for most of the season, but Loogman held the top time early in the season and again part way through. Both runners turned in their best time of the season at the championships, with Lambert prevailing in 46.61. Loogman was second in 47.34. Loogman finished fourth in the 100m Hurdles, turning in a personal best of 16.55. Amanda Menschel of Wheatland won the event (15.84).

coffee-break-b.jpgThe Dunsmuir Tigers started the NSCIF Division-VI baseball championship game on Saturday saying, “You’ve gotta believe.”

Dunsmuir was at the end of a season where several of its games were canceled due to inclement weather, including a two-week layoff. The freshman-rich Tigers entered the playoffs with only 10 contests under their belts—the fewest amount of any team in the playoffs.

The third-seeded Tigers defeated American Christian Academy 18-8 in the first round of the playoffs. Then, they had to come from behind to beat number-two Big Valley 9-8 on the road in the semifinals. So, playing for the section title on a neutral field at Shasta College, the Tigers certainly believed they could be section champs. But their playoff run came to a close with a second place finish as they fell to the top seeded Princeton Eagles 7-3. Dunsmuir also finished as the runner up to Princeton last season, losing at home 7-5.

“I’m proud of you guys and the way you competed,” Dunsmuir coach Rich Belzer said to his players after the game. (more…)

BookStore text click AprilYeah, I know it’s well into softball season, and basketball is a fading memory. But, I’m taking the opportunity during a relatively slow period to point out some of our female B-ball talent.

First, let me say that if you’re not on the list, it doesn’t mean you aren’t a good player, or I don’t like you. In fact, I left off several really good players that I think very highly of. But, there can only be 12 players on the “Dream Team,” and I’m picking not just on talent, but the ability to fill a role.

The team:
