The Dunsmuir Tigers won their first ever league wrestling championship, led by C.J. Palmer’s 2nd place finish. The Tigers won the small schools division with 56 points, ahead of Burney (42), Fall River and Big Valley.

Etna took 2nd in the big schools division with 123 points, behind Modoc’s 183 points. Tulelake was 4th with 34.5 points.

Etna’s Anthony Garcia (106 lbs), Joey Defaria (113), Hayden Kaae (182), and Jack Souza (220) earned All-League honors with 1st place finishes. Lions Donovan Appler (152) and Cecyl Stout (132) were 2nd. Luke Schwall (106) was 3rd. Earl Summers (126) and Lance Taylor (145) were 4th.

Garcia won the 106-pound division with a 15-6 decision over Cody Tiffany of Modoc. Defaria pinned Jake Lewis of Big Valley in the second round for the top finish at 113. Kaae pinned Dunsmuir’s Trent Johnson at 182 pounds, and John Souza earned a 14-0 major decision over Modoc’s Matt Froeming.

Tulelake’s Derek Wood (138) finished 2nd, Lorenzo Reyes (126) was 3rd, and Ernan Reyes (132) finished 4th.

Perhaps the match of the meet belonged to Etna’s Earl Summers and Lorenzo Reyes from Tulelake with a blood and guts third-place bout at 126 pounds. Reyes controlled the match for the first two periods building a 7-2 advantage. Summers scored with a take down near the end of the second and trailed by three points to start the third. After a couple stoppages for a bloodied nose on Reyes, Summers struck again near the end of the match, nearly pinning Reyes. Time expired before the pin, but Summers scored a 3-point near-fall to tie match at 7-7.

In the overtime, Reyes quickly shot to the legs and scored the take down for the 9-7 win.

The Division III/IV championships will be held in Etna on Saturday, February 18.

Fans from both sides got their money’s worth on Thursday night when the Weed Cougars and Dunsmuir Tigers tangled in Dunsmuir. There was rarely more than two or three points separating the squads and neither team led by more than a basket at the end of a quarter, with the Tigers leading 19-17 at the end of the first quarter, and 37-36 at the half. Weed led 50-49 going into the final frame, and won 73-70, as the Tigers’ last shot came up about an inch short of sending the game to overtime. This may of been the best game between Siskiyou County teams so far this season. Hey, even the halftime show was good.

The Tigers led 49-47 late in the fourth quarter, when Cougar Tommy Haosouphanthong completed a 3-point play the hard way to give Weed a 50-49 lead at the end of three quarters.

Dunsmuir regained the lead, 51-50, when Skylar Padula set up Mason Mekeel for a hoop to open the fourth quarter scoring. Weed came back with buckets from Brandon Williams and Caleb Goltz to go up 54-51. A basket by Mekeel and a coast-to-coast drive by Daniel Ballard gave the Tigers the advantage, 55-54, with 6:20 to play in the game.

Noah Traylor, who had been sitting for about a quarter and a half due to foul trouble, returned to the game and promptly powered his way to an old fashion 3-point play, giving Weed the lead 57-55. Two Mekeel throws tied the contest at 57-57, with 4:50 to go. Jacob Greeno hit a hoop, and Kyle Rooney tipped in a rebound, making it 61-57 for the Tigers with 3:14 on the clock.

A deuce by Traylor and a 3-ball from Williams regained the lead for Weed, at 62-61, with under two minutes to go. Justin DeClusin put the Tigers on top with a basket, 63-62. Then it was Traylor time again with a put back, giving the Cougars the advantage 64-63. Ballard set up Mekeel to make it 65-64 for the Tigers.

A 3-pointer by Matthew Morgan, gave the Cougars a 67-65 advantage with 1:02 to go. Ballard hit two from the charity stripe, tying the contest, 67-67. Another Traylor put back propelled Weed into the lead 69-67, with 43 ticks on the clock. Williams executed a steal-n-score with 34 seconds to play, making it 71-67.

Ballard drained a 3-ball with 18 seconds to go, bringing the Tigers within one possession, 71-70. The Tigers quickly fouled following Ballard’s score, putting Morgan at the line. Morgan dropped in both freebies, making at a 3-point lead for the Cougars, 73-70, with 15 seconds remaining. Despite intense Cougar defensive pressure, Ballard manage to get off a 3-point shot as time expired, but it came up just short of net, leaving the Cougars with a 73-70 win.

Traylor led the Cougars with 24 points, in about two and a half quarters of playing time. Morgan put up 19 points, including five 3-pointers. Williams scored 11 points, and Josh Rogers contributed 10.

Ballard had 19 points for the Tigers, with five 3-balls. Mekeel also scored 19 points. DeClusin and Rooney each scored 10 points for Dunsmuir.

Mt. Shasta 53 – Fort Bragg 23

The Fort Bragg Lady Timberwolves led 12-9 after the first quarter. After that, the Mt. Shasta Lady Bears decided to defend the den, holding Fort Bragg to just two points in the second quarter, five in the third quarter, and four in the final frame. Meanwhile, the Lady Bear offense played the scoreboard like a pinball machine (ask your parents what that is) putting up 53 points for the game, and outscoring Fort Bragg 44-11 in the final three quarters.

Kathryn Andrus led Mt. Shasta with 12 points. Tori Hansen put up 10, and Jeanette Ricci had 8 points.

Yreka 52 – Cosumnes Oaks 48

This was a back and forth contest, with the Cosumnes Oaks Wolfpack leading 13-12 at the end of the opening frame, and Yreka up 31-24 at the half. The Wolfpack came back to lead 37-35 at the end of three quarters.

Yreka tied it up 37-37 in the fourth quarter on a dish from Kayla Stonier to Makenzie Allen for a hoop. Allen scored again to put Yreka in front 39-37. The Lady Miners went up 45-40, when Katie Brummett set up Dakota Cash for a bucket. However, Cosumnes came back to tie it at 45-45 on a 3-point play the hard way, with 4:02 to play. The Wolfpack then took the lead 48-47 at the 3:10 mark of the fourth quarter.

Yreka regained the lead 50-48 on a basket by Brummett, with 1:47 to play. The Lady Miners sealed the deal when Ashley Ensminger came up with a steal and fed Kelsey Stonier for a hoop, making the final score 52-48.

Cloverdale 49 – Fall River 37

Weed 32 – Biggs 45

The Weed Lady Cougars suffered their first loss of the season to the undefeated Biggs Lady Wolverines. Weed hung close until late in the fourth quarter, trailing 26-20 at the half, and coming within four points, 36-32, on a basket by Destinee Jones with a little over three minutes to play in the game. The Lady Cougars, however, would not score again, as Biggs went on to win 45-32.

Karene Marshall led Weed with 10 points. Jillian Neel put up 6 points.

Boys

Mt. Shasta 76 – Dunsmuir 57

The Mt. Shasta Bears went out to a 25-10 first quarter lead, and it looked like this one might get really ugly. However, the Dunsmuir Tigers played the Bears relatively even the rest of the way. The second quarter was a stalemate, with the Bears still leading by the same 15-point margin at halftime, 39-25. Mt. Shasta led 58-40 after three quarters, and went on to win 76-57.

Dunsmuir was playinmg a fill in game and will be replaced on the consolation side of the bracket by Hidden Valley for the remainder of the tourney.

Clayton Cool led the Bears with 15 points, including three 3-balls. Paul Thelander put up 14, Dylan Padula 12, and Kody Waite had 10 points.

Dunsmuir was led by Jake Mekeel with 20 points. Daniel Ballard had 13, and Jacob Greeno scored 10 points.

Yreka 43 – Weed 42

The Yreka Miners picked up their first win of the season. This one was close almost the entire way. The Weed Cougars led 10-9 at the end of the first quarter. Yreka led 20-17 at the half, and 28-25 at the end of three quarters.

The Miners went on a 9-0 run to start the final frame, going up by 12 points, 37-25, on a hoop by Dean Schafer with about six minutes to play in the game.

Trailing 41-33, with under three minutes to go, the Cougars put together a comeback bid. Noah Traylor hit a hoop, 41-35. Two from Josh Rogers made it 41-37. A pair of freebies by Matthew Morgan made it a one possession game, 41-39, with 57 ticks on the clock.

Yreka’s Ryan Kennedy dished to Schafer for a bucket to extend the Miner lead to 43-39, with 40 seconds to play.

With three seconds to play, Morgan drained a 3-ball for the Cougars, but that would be it, as the Miners held on for the 43-42 win.

Schafer led Yreka with 12 points. Jayson Sadowski put up 7 points. Jeremy Cox and Kevin Berry each added six points.

Weed was led by Trevor Shaffer with 12 points. Traylor, Morgan, and Rogers each contributed 8 points.

For the fourth year, PremierWest Bank and SiskiyouYouth.com are sponsoring the Basketball Challenge for varsity basketball teams in Siskiyou County: Butte Valley, Dunsmuir, Etna, Happy Camp, Mt. Shasta, Tulelake, Weed, and Yreka. The winning team’s players and coaching staff will receive custom made “Team of the Year” T-shirts.

The winner of the challenge will be the girls or boys team that is most successful during the 2010/2011 season, which is defined as the team that advances the furthest in the North Section CIF playoffs. The challenge will end at the finish of the section playoffs and does not include any state playoff games because Division-VI teams (Butte Valley, Dunsmuir, and Happy Camp) are not eligible for state playoffs. Tiebreakers also do not include state playoff games. Games against JV teams do not count.

If two or more teams reach the same point in the playoffs, the tiebreakers are as follows:

1. Best overall record (winning percentage).

2. Team with best record in its division (winning percentage).

3. Least points allowed per game.

4. Biggest point differential per game.

5. Coin flip.

Please note that the Challenge is not meant to determine the best basketball team, only the team with the most successful season. It’s a rare day when any Division-VI team beats any Division IV team on the court. It can happen, but the odds aren’t good.

What the challenge does do is fill a gap. It’s not unusual for one of the teams listed above to have a very good season, but not win its league because they are playing against schools that are much larger and a division higher. Or, the team runs into a private school during the playoffs that has an unfair advantage in obtaining players. And, of course, there are the public schools that are pretty much sports “factories” that “attract” players from nearby cities. It’s tough to compete against those types of schools.

The PremierWest/SiskiyouYouth Basketball Challenge is a way for a successful team to get the recognition it deserves.

The standings for the challenge will be updated on the SiskiyouYouth.com website each Wednesday and Saturday (Sunday if games are played on Saturday), as well as by Rick Martin on NorCal Classic Hits radio 102.3/101.7 on Wednesday and Monday mornings. The first update will be Sunday, December 4.

Last season’s winner was the Butte Valley Lady Bulldogs who won the NSCIF D-VI title. They also won the challenge the prior year. The Happy Camp Lady Indians won the first B-Ball Challenge.

DORRIS – It was the match up that most 8-Man football fans likely wanted to see for the section championship—a rematch from earlier in the season when the Butte Valley Bulldogs defeated the Dunsmuir Tigers, 27-26, in Dunsmuir. There was little doubt that the two teams were the best in the division.

The Bulldogs earned home field throughout the playoffs by running the table in the regular season, and then winning their first two playoff games against Loyalton and Princeton in convincing fashion. Dunsmuir found its way to the title game by rolling into Westwood for a semi-final game, and cutting down the Lumberjacks. Dunsmuir’s only regular season loss was at the hands of the Bulldogs.

The championship game on Wednesday night had just about everything a football fan could ask for—five lead changes, defensive scores, controversial calls, tough defense and plenty of big offensive plays.

Perhaps the biggest play of the game came with a little over six minutes to go in the final frame. Dunsmuir was leading 34-32 and had a third-and-goal from the Bulldog 12-yard-line. The Tigers threw on third down, and Bulldog Will Gentry picked off the pass and raced 86 yards to pay dirt for what would prove to be the game and section winning touchdown. It was also Gentry who intercepted a Tiger pass and returned it for a touchdown when the two teams met in the regular season.

“I was just hoping no one would catch me from behind,” said Gentry after the game.

To start the game, Butte Valley won the coin toss and elected to defer to the second half. Dunsmuir’s opening drive stalled and the Tigers were forced to punt.

The Bulldogs went to work on their first possession from their own three-yard-line. One play and 97 yards later, Colten Struble put Butte Valley up 6-0, with 8:58 left in the first quarter. The 2-point conversion failed.

Dunsmuir drove to the Bulldog six-yard-line on its second possession, but turned the ball over on downs.

Butte Valley appeared to have a first down on the ensuing possession, but fumbled. Tiger Daniel Ballard picked up the loose ball and went 15 yards for the defensive touchdown, tying the game at 6-6, with 3:24 to go in the first. The Tiger 2-point try failed.

Dunsmuir took the lead less than a minute into the second quarter, 12-6, on a 2-yard TD run by Jake Mekeel. The score was set up by Tiger Mason Mekeel’s fumble recovery on the Bulldog 47-yard-line.

It took the Bulldogs just 19 seconds to answer, when Gentry returned the Tiger kickoff 84 yards for a TD, tying the game at 12-12.

Following the Bulldog kickoff, Dunsmuir started at its own 34-yard-line, and marched 66 yards to to go back on top, 20-12, with 7:22 left in the half. A 3-yard run by Mekeel capped the drive. Mekeel then passed to Justin Declusin for a 2-point conversion.

Another big kick return by Gentry gave the Bulldogs great field position at the Dunsmuir 36. Struble scored his second TD of the game on a 1 ½ yard run, making it 20-18, with 4:37 until the intermission. Butte Valley was unable to convert the 2-point attempt

On their next possession, the Bulldogs drove to the Tiger 3-yard-line, but fumbled on fourth down with 38 seconds left in the half, leaving Dunsmuir with a 20-18 lead.

Midway through the third quarter, the Tigers drove 67 yards to up their advantage to 26-18. The TD came on a 15-yard pass from Mekeel to Dayton Pepperdine, who broke a pair of tackles to find his way to the zone. The 2-point conversion attempt failed.

Struble capped a 57-yard Butte Valley drive with a 39-yard TD run with 4:55 left in the third quarter. Struble passed to Tony DiCicco for a 2-point conversion, tying the game, 26-26.

With 1:19 left in the third quarter, Bobby Vaughan sprinted 51 yards to give the Bulldogs their first lead since early in the first quarter, 32-26. The 2-point try was no good.

Less than three minutes into the fourth quarter, Mekeel went in from a yard out, tying the game at 32-32. Jeff Rhoades then bulled his way into the end zone for a 2-point conversion, regaining the lead for Dunsmuir, 34-32.

Dunsmuir successfully recovered an onside kick, getting the ball back near midfield. Butte Valley claimed that the Tiger who recovered the ball was already out of bounds when he first touched it. The officials met, discussed the play (Or where to go for pizza after the game…no one really knows), and stuck with the original ruling of a Dunsmuir recovery.

The Tigers drove to the Bulldog 12-yard-line where they had a third-and-goal. That’s when Gentry picked off a Tiger pass and went 86 yards for the game-winner. Vaughan ran for the 2-point conversion, giving the Bulldogs a 40-34 lead.

Dunsmuir was forced to punt on its ensuing possession and then hope for a defensive stand.

On third-and-13, the Bulldogs attempted a pass. The ball was under-thrown and the receiver and defender attempted to come back for the ball, with both slipping on the play. However, an official ruled pass interference on the Tiger defender, giving Butte Valley a first down with about two minutes to play in the game. The Tiger bench vociferously objected to the pass interference call.

The Bulldogs then successfully ran out the clock to seal the 40-34 win, and the NSCIF D-VI (8-Man) section championship.

Following the Bulldogs’ victory, Butte Valley Coach Jason Allen put the significance of a section championship in perspective by painting the big picture for his team.

“The one thing I want you to take away from the program is that it’s how you influence somebody else’s life and make it better, how you live. Never forget that. If you forget I taught you how to run, block, catch, and throw, remember it’s how you affect other people that matters.”

The Bulldogs finished the season a perfect 12-0. Dunsmuir finished 11-2, with both losses coming to Butte Valley.

Editors note: the video didn’t show clearly what happened on either of the controversial calls.
