etna-v-u-prep-football-playoff-14-front-c.jpgREDDING – Etna’s Munson twins turned in hard-nosed plays that bracketed the Lions’ old fashion bashing of the third-seeded U-Prep Panthers last Friday night—sort of like an F-350 running over a Prius.

On the first play from scrimmage, Etna ran a sweep, and wide out Taylor Pehle-Munson hammered U-Prep’s outside linebacker, Travis Buick, clearing the way for Alex Case to rumble 45 yards. Welcome to playoff football.

Late in the game, it was QB Jordan Pehle-Munson that delivered a big blow. Leading 26-13, with about two minutes to play, J. Munson powered for 14 yards crushing two would be tacklers along the way.

valley-tire-red-300.jpgThe Munson’s weren’t the only brother duo that came up big for Etna. The Case brothers, Alex and Lucas, accounted for over 200 yards in rushing, and on defense pounded just about everything wearing Panther blue.

Etna drove deep into Panther territory on their first drive, but stalled at the 20-yard-line, where U-Prep took over on downs. Etna’s first drive was the only scoring threat by either squad until just past midway in the second quarter.

svpt-small.jpgAfter T. Munson recovered a Panther fumble, the Lions went to work on the U-Prep 49. L. Case picked up six yards on first down, and then appeared to have a 43-yard TD on the next play. A block in the back penalty negated the TD, but Etna still had a first down at the U-Prep 32. A. Case went for 13 yards to move the ball to the 19. A series of miscues led to the Lions facing a fourth-and-11 on the 20-yard-line. J. Munson then completed a pass to T. Munson for 17 yards and a first down at the 3-yard-line. A. Case took it the rest of the way on the next play. T. Munson added the PAT, and Etna led 7-0, with 2:30 left in the half. (more…)

bowen-ad-rev.jpgDespite losing their last two matches, the Etna Lady Lions moved up in the playoff point rankings to ninth, and were also seeded ninth. Etna (17-17-2) will travel to Red Bluff to take on the Mercy Warriors (18-13).

Dunsmuir was ranked seventh in playoff points, but was jumped over by Evergreen League foes Big Valley and Butte Valley. By NSCIF rule, Big Valley and Butte Valley moved ahead of Dunsmuir by virtue of their higher finish in league. Big Valley won the league and was 2-0 against Dunsmuir. Butte Valley split with Dunsmuir, and finished second in league. Dunsmuir was third in the Evergreen League. (more…)

etna-v-burney-volleyball-3-front.jpgETNA – The Etna JV Lady Lions dominated the Burney Raider JVs in a 2-0 win. The seniors said thanks to their parents, and the varsity looked like they hadn’t practiced together in a week.

Early on, tied 7-7 in game-one, it looked like the Etna JVs and Burney JVs were going to be locked in a struggle. But, an ace by Katie Eiler gave Etna an 8-7 lead and started a 15-2 run by the Lady Lions. With the score 14-9, Tandy Thackeray rotated to server, and Etna rattled off nine straight points, including four Thackeray aces, to lead 23-9. A kill by Eiler made it 24-10. A service error by Burney finished out the game, with Etna winning 25-14.

Game-two began with Thackeray serving and Etna going y-ad-1.jpgout to a 5-0 lead. Abby Travis and Cameryn Morrill each had a kill, and Thackeray recorded another ace in the opening run. With the score 5-3, the Lady Lion JVs went on another 5-0 run, to increase the lead to 10-3, behind a pair of aces and a kill by Eiler. A kill by Lisa Jordan-Bennett made it 11-4. Coach Linda Berry made liberal use of her bench the remainder of the game. Burney did make a strong comeback bid to tie the game at 23-23, but the Lady Lion JVs held on to win the game 25-23, and the match 2-0.

While the JVs shined, the Etna varsity sleepwalked through the first two games of their match—a match full of service errors, hitting errors, and general confusion. Games one and two went Burney’s way 25-21, 25-21.

The Lady Lions began to come out of their slumber in games three and four, winning 25-22 and 25-21. (more…)
