The Etna Lady Lions notched their first win this season in Shasta Cascade League play, 54-50, over the visiting Burney Lady Raiders on Tuesday night.

Etna never trailed in the first quarter, and held a 14-10 lead going into the second frame. Burney briefly held the lead on two occasions in the second quarter, 15-14, and 25-24. The Lady Lions took a 26-25 advantage into the locker room on a bucket by Sara Hoyt with six seconds left in the half. At the end of three quarters, it was the Lady Raiders on top, 38-36.

With 1:20 left in the game and Burney leading 49-47, the contest took a bizarre turn. Following a jump ball call, the Burney coach was hit with a technical for showing his displeasure with the call. The official then informed the assistant coach that he had “two seconds” to sit down or be hit with a technical foul, as well. In compliance with the official’s command, the coach headed to an open spot on the bench, while the official struck a “mad-dog” style pose. With the assistant coach’s posterior approximately six inches from being fully seated on the bench, the official demonstratively took control of his fiefdom by issuing the threatened technical.
