Early on Friday, Weed head baseball coach Josh Oates texted, “Beautiful day for baseball. Maybe we can shock the SCL world today.”

While wins by the 7-4 Weed Cougars baseball team may not have literally shocked the Shasta Cascade League, it would have been a significant accomplishment against the 12-1 Etna Lions. And, the Cougars nearly pulled it off in game-one, as they led 6-5 going into the final frame. If only high school baseball was a six inning game….

“We played solid baseball for six innings, but it’s a seven inning game, and we couldn’t close the deal,” said Oates on Saturday. “The best thing we can do is learn from the double header, and use it to make ourselves better. I believe we can play with anybody in the league, and the first six innings yesterday are evidence of that.”

Needing at least a run, Etna’s Tanner Schaefer led off the top of the seventh inning with a single. Schaefer moved to second base on a balk. Nick Meyer came to the plate with an assignment–bunt Schaefer to third base. Meyer not only advanced to Schaefer to third, but beat out the bunt for a base hit. An error on the play allowed Schaefer to score and tie the game, 6-6. Meyer went to second base on the play. (more…)

The Weed Lady Cougars softball team opened up its Shasta Cascade League season with a sweep of the Etna Lady Lions, winning of 10-4 and 13-3. The victories are the first for Weed over Etna in softball for at least eight years (Weed hadn’t won for as far back as MaxPreps has records).

The Lady Cougars wasted no time in serving notice that this was year was going to be different. After retiring the Lady Lions in order to start the game, Weed put up eight runs in the bottom of the opening frame.

Dominique Foster led off with a single, went to second on a passed ball and continued on to third base. Foster found her way home, when Tristen Skeen grounded out to short. Jeni Cheffey took a walk, and went to second when Audali Avila reached on an error. Taylor Harris ran for Avila. Michelle Line plated Cheffey and Harris with a double, making the score 3-0. (more…)

The Etna Lions batted around and then some in the bottom of the first inning against the visiting Rogue River Chieftains on Wednesday afternoon. Despite going base to base for most of the inning, the Lions scored eight runs in the opening frame.

The Chieftains did manage a couple of runs of their own in the top of the second inning. But, the Lions came right back with five more in the bottom half of the inning—again, going base to base. Etna led 13-2 after two inning, and went on to win 16-2. (more…)

The Phoenix Pirates had a couple of big blasts, but it was the host Etna Lions that won Monday’s game, 8-4.

The Pirates took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a 2-run bomb.

Etna responded with three runs in the bottom half of the opening frame. Colby Rimmer led off the inning with a walk, and Nick Hansen followed with a stroll to first base. An errant pick off attempt by the Phoenix pitcher allowed both runners to move up 90 feet. With one down, Tanner Schaefer reached on an error. Rimmer scored on the play, and Hansen went to third base. Schaefer stole second, but Hansen was caught stealing, making it two away. A double by Nick Meyer plated Schaefer. Meyer went to third base on a passed ball, and scored on a single by Preston Munson, giving Etna a 3-0 lead. (more…)

There are two things about Siskiyou County sports that are a certainty. If it’s baseball and softball season, you can be certain that it will rain, snow, or do both. And, you can be certain that I’ll get bored with no games to cover and put together the Siskiyou County Girls B-Ball Dream Team list.

As always, when I do these lists, if you don’t see yourself on it, it doesn’t mean that I don’t think you’re a good player or I don’t like you. There can only be 12 on the Dream Team, which means a lot of really good players will be left off.

Ones, Twos, and Threes

Jeanette Ricci (12), Mt. Shasta

Jillian Neel (10), Weed

Ashley Ensminger (10), Yreka

I believe Jeanette Ricci was the best all-around girls basketball player in Siskiyou County this season. She was the point guard on the Shasta Cascade League champion Lady Bears, averaging 9.5 ppg, 4.2 spg, and 3.7 rpg. Ricci hustles, plays tough defense and she’s relentless at both ends of the court. That’s the kind of player I want running my team, and Ricci would be my point guard. Oh, and if you think the points per game total is a bit low, consider that Mt. Shasta was built around defense, and only averaged 40 ppg, which means Ricci accounted for about 25% of the points. (more…)

It wasn’t a pretty beginning to the Yreka softball season, but the Lady Miners swept a double header from the Etna Lady Lions (4-3) on Tuesday to get off to a 2-0 start. Yreka had to come from seven runs down, 9-2, in the first game to win a wild one, 20-14. Yreka jumped out to a 10-0 lead in game-two, and held on for a 10-4 win. While the games were played in Yreka, it was actually Etna that was the home squad because the games were originally scheduled to be played in Etna.

Chantell Fraser led off game-one with a base hit, stole second, and eventually scored on an RBI ground out by Tianna Cruz, giving Yreka a 1-0 lead.

Etna responded with five runs in the bottom half of the opening frame. Tessa Burrone, Jessie Eiler, and Renee Finley singled and scored. Brittany Dean reached on a fielder’s choice and scored, and Jasmine Bingham walked and scored.

In the bottom of the second inning, Tiana Besoain led off with a single, and stole second base. Burrone followed with a hustle double, and Besoain moved to third. Eiler plated Besoain and Burrone with a single, making it a 7-1 lead for Etna.

Rachel Lutke singled to open up the top of the fourth inning for Yreka, stole second, went to third on a hit by Abbi Hansen, and scored on a sac fly from Breanna Ruelas, to make the score 7-2. (more…)
