The College OPTIONS Partnership is pleased to announce the signing of the North State Promise on May 22, 2013 in Downtown Redding at the Market Street Promenade. The event will begin at 3:30pm with the official signing ceremony starting at 4:00pm. Student performances from the Mt. Shasta High School Choir, Vista Middle School Jazz Band and Shasta High School Madrigal Choir will be included in the celebration. Dignitaries from UC Davis, Simpson University and Tehama County Department of Education will speak, along with a North State Student Representative from Central Valley High School.

This collaborative effort was undertaken to ensure that North State students and families have access to superior, affordable higher education, close to home. The North State Promise document formalizes and solidifies a specific promise from our local higher education partners to our North State students and families. This Promise gives special incentives for our North State students to continue their education at the post-secondary level. The Promise also allows our North State students to obtain an affordable, quality education with outstanding educational institutions, located closest to home. The event on May 22 will celebrate the formal signing of the North State Promise document and these commitments. (more…)

Does having fun while helping our local youth sound like a good idea to you? Does dancing to Big Band music and great food interest you? Then, grab your honey and gather friends and family to attend the 1st Annual Kiwanis Club of Yreka Dinner Dance featuring the Siskiyou Big Band and a delicious Top Sirloin/Chicken dinner prepared by Kermith Walters to take place on Friday, May 31, 6:00 to 11:30 pm at Winema Hall, Siskiyou Golden Fair Grounds.

Kiwanians Karen Evans and Clarence Barger presented their bright idea to the Club early this year and planning began for the Club’s most ambitious fundraiser of all. The Big Band Dinner Dance will fuel the club’s community service projects and donations to a large complement of needs and activities that enrich the lives of children and strengthen families. Many of you may know a Kiwanian or two but may not know of the time, hard work, and dedication they freely give. To be a Kiwanian is to dedicate yourself to changing the world one child and one community at a time. No Host Social Hour begins at 6:00 pm followed by the delicious top sirloin/chicken dinner with all the trimmings. Then get “In the Mood” for dancing to the 25 piece Siskiyou Big Band till 11:30 pm. Would you buy a car without test driving it? No. Yet many students do just that when they choose a major or a college without thoroughly researching it. But how do you test a campus that is hundreds of miles away? How do you test a major like Animation, or Hydrology, when high schools don’t offer classes in those subjects? Pre-College Summer Programs.

Colleges and universities around the country offer opportunities specifically designed for high school students to “attend” college for a week (or two or more), take classes from college professors (geared for high schoolers), live in the dorms, have a roommate and learn about a subject they think they might want to study “for real.” There are hundreds of these programs and the subjects taught vary from performing and fine arts to engineering, medicine, law, politics, psychology, anthropology – use your imagination. Some focus on a general college experience and offer intensive workshops on college entrance exam preparation, writing essays for college and scholarship applications, and learning how to navigate a college environment. A few offer academic credit, but most are enrichment opportunities. (more…)

The North Section released the initial basketball playoff points rankings on Sunday. Keep in mind that some coaches are lax when it comes to reporting results, and the NSCIF may not have had fully accurate info for these rankings.

    Boys

    Division-IV

Yreka (8-13) is ranked 11th, ahead of Colusa (9-12) and behind Lassen (9-14). Orland (19-4) ad Corning (20-1) are tied for the top spot.

    Division-V

The Shasta Cascade League has three of the top four spots, with Mt. Shasta (17-5) ranked number-1. Weed (18-4) is 2nd, and Modoc (16-4) is 4th. Liberty Christian holds the 3rd spot at 16-7. The bad news for Mt. Shasta and Weed is that they are both behind Modoc in the SCL standings. If it stays that way, the Braves will jump the Bears and Cougars in the playoff seedings. Tulelake (10-7) is ranked 8th. Trinity (10-12) is 9th.

    Division-VI

Butte Valley (9-5) is tied with Princeton (9-8) for 7th. Dunsmuir at 7-6 is 11th. Redding Christian at 19-3 is ranked number-1.

    Girls

    Division-IV

    Yreka (12-10) is tied with Wheatland (11-11) for 7th. Lassen (9-10) is 9th. Sutter at 15-6 is number-1. (more…)
