It is once again time for AAU Basketball in Siskiyou County! For the last five years, AAU basketball has been providing Siskiyou County’s young athletes the opportunity to bring their basketball skills to a whole new level. Athletes from Etna, Mount Shasta, Weed, Yreka, and other communities in Siskiyou County have enjoyed this great experience. The benefits of being part of this elite basketball program have proven to be numerous. Better competition breeds a better competitor. Each year, the team travels to places like Chico, Rocklin, Redding, Medford, and Reno to play against other AAU teams. Our athletes are exposed to extremely talented teams, pushing them to become better players themselves. Our goal is to enable Siskiyou County athletes in their goals of playing basketball beyond the high school level. (more…)

The top three teams remain the same, with the Dunsmuir boys moving into the four-spot. With one more game remaining before the end of the regular season, this is a good time to remind everyone that the winner of the PremierWest Bank B-Ball Challenge is the team that advances the farthest in the NSCIF section playoffs. The 1st tiebreaker is overall record, which might come into play for the first time this year…just a feeling. The official record for the teams will be the one that the section uses for playoff seeding. To see all the tiebreakers and rules click the link at the end of this article.

Keep in mind that games against junior varsity teams do not count. Also, some teams may not have reported scores to MaxPreps or SiskiyouYouth.com (some coaches are seriously lagging). Standings will be updated when scores become available. The next full update will be Saturday, February 18, 2012.

As you look over these ranking keep in mind that they are based on what coaches have posted to MaxPreps. The North Section CIF uses the information on MaxPreps to determine the won-loss records. If coaches don’t keep it updated, the rankings are not accurate. So, there could be considerable changes from what is seen here, when the coaches finally do what they are supposed to do.

With just a game or two to go for teams in the Shasta Cascade League and Evergreen league, there are some very tight races.

Shasta Cascade League Boys

1. Modoc (8-1) – the Braves can lock up at least a share of the title by winning against Etna (3-6) at home on Thursday. If Fall River (7-1) falters against Mt. Shasta on Tuesday night or Burney on Thursday night, the SCL title belongs to Modoc outright.

2. Fall River (7-1) – the Bulldogs also have at least a share of the title in their control by winning out. They need to beat Mt. Shasta (5-3) on Tuesday, and then Burney (0-9) on Thursday. In order for the Bulldogs to win the league outright, Modoc would have to be upset by Etna.

Shasta Cascade League Girls

1. Mt. Shasta (7-1) – the Lady Bears have total control of their destiny. Win their remaining game against Fall River on Tuesday, win in Weed on Friday, and the Lady Bears win the title outright.

2. Weed (7-2) – the Lady Cougars still have a very good shot of grabbing at least share of the SCL crown. To win it outright, Weed has to beat Mt. Shasta on Friday, Mt. Shasta would have to lose to Fall River on Tuesday, and Fall River would have to lose to Burney on Thursday. No matter what Fall River does, Weed can gain at least a share of the title by beating Mt. Shasta.

3. Fall River (6-2) – the Lady Bulldogs have control of their own destiny, as far as a share of the title goes. Win their remaining game against Mt. Shasta and win in Burney (1-8) next Friday, and the Lady Bulldogs will share the title.

Apparently winning their last four games of the regular season, three against .500 or better upper division teams, and finishing second in the predominately D-I NAL wasn’t enough to move the Yreka Miners into a high enough seed in the NSCIF D-II playoffs to get a home game. Yreka (7-7-1) stayed at number-6, and will be on the road at 3-seed Live Oak (16-2-2) on Thursday, February 16. (more…)
