    The Yreka Miners boys and girls varsity track and field teams each finished 2nd at the 49th annual Yreka Lions Track Meet, held on Friday at Miner Stadium. Enterprise won the boys competition, and Red Bluff took the girls competition. Weed’s Mallory Pappas set the Weed High School record in the Triple Jump at 32-06.00. Janelle Jaegel set the Mt. Shasta High School Pole Vault record at 9-06.00. Yreka’s Jena Turner won the 300m Hurdles in a North Section best time of 46.40

    Etna’s John Whelan won the Mt. Shasta Invitational cross country meet on Friday in a time of 12:35.00, almost a minute ahead of second place finisher Blake Zufall of Shasta High School (13:29.00).

    The Yreka boys varsity team finished second to Shasta for the second week in a row, 44-32. Clayton Bunn turned in the best Yreka performance finishing in a tie for 3rd with Shasta’s Landon Wollard at 13:30.00.

    The Mt. Shasta girls varsity had a strong showing, taking 3rd place (88), behind Ashland (39) and Chico (80), both much larger schools. Ellen Sampson led the way for the Lady Bears on the 2.35 mile course, finishing 6th in 17:01.00.

    Jackson Street’s Jacob Gross captured the boys middle school title, running the 1.6 mile course at Yreka’s Greenhorn Park in 10:50.11. Angelic Avery of Jackson St. was the girls middle school winner in 12:17.00.

    Scott Valley JH took the boys middle school team title, and Grenada earned the girls middle school title.

    Etna’s John Whelan rolled to a victory at the Yreka Elks Invitational cross country meet on Friday, winning the 5000m boys varsity race in 16:08.08. His margin of victory over the second place finisher was more than a minute.

    Jackson Street’s Jacob Gross captured the boys middle school title, running the 1.6 mile course at Yreka’s Greenhorn Park in 10:50.11. Angelic Avery of Jackson St. was the girls middle school winner in 12:17.00.

    The Yreka high school boys varsity was second, behind Shasta in the team scores. The Yreka JV boys were second, behind Roseburg. Scott Valley JH took the boys middle school title, and the Grenada girls finished on top of the middle school field.

    The Golden Eagle Charter School boys team captured the Mountain Valley League post-season tournament championship on Saturday, with a 40-25 win over Hornbrook. Hornbrook was second in the boys division, and was the regular season MVL champion.

    The McCloud boys finished third in the tourney, defeating Shasta Valley 37-12. Gazelle downed Big Springs, 32-4, to bring home the consolation prize. (more…)
