The North Section released the first 2013 baseball playoff points rankings on Monday. Keep in mind that the accuracy of the rankings depends on coaches posting game results to MaxpPreps. Missing game results can skew the rankings. The top eight teams in each division make playoffs, except D-VI which has only six teams.

With two nights of regular season basketball remaining, here are the league championship scenarios.

    Northern Athletic League

    Boys

Corning (7-1, 23-2) has won the crown, but not before a surging Central Valley (5-2, 14-11) team put a blemish on the Cardinals NAL record. Yreka (1-6) is tied for last with Lassen.

    Girls

Anderson has locked up an outright championship at 7-0. The Lady Cubs (15-10) play at last place Yreka (1-6, 12-12) on Friday.

    Shasta Cascade League

    Boys

With Modoc’s win over Weed last night, the Braves have won the SCL at 11-1. Mt. Shasta is in 2nd at 9-2, and Weed is 3rd at 8-3. The Bears and Cougars face off on Friday night in Mt. Shasta to determine second place and likely who has the higher seed in the NSCIF D-V playoffs.

The Happy Camp boys junior varsity started their game against the Tulelake Honkers with five players, on Friday. Early in the game, Happy Camp lost a player due to injury, and played the majority of the contest with four players.

Eventually, the Indians were left with three on the court, following a foul out. Although shorthanded, the Indians put together a gallant effort, before losing to the Honkers, 82-66.

Happy Camp’s effort wasn’t lost on the Tulelake faithful, as one Honker parent remarked via text, “They had so much heart.” (more…)

The North Section released updated basketball playoff points rankings on Monday. Keep in mind that some coaches are lax when it comes to reporting results, and the NSCIF may not have had accurate info for these rankings.

    Boys

Division-IV (Top 12 go to playoffs)

Yreka (8-14) is ranked 11th, ahead of Colusa (11-12) and behind Lassen (10-15). Orland (20-4) and Corning (22-2) are tied for the top spot.

Division-V (Top 16 go to playoffs)

The Shasta Cascade League has three of the top four spots, with Mt. Shasta (18-5) and Weed (20-4) tied for 1st. Modoc (18-4) is 4th. Liberty Christian holds the 3rd spot at 17-7. The bad news for Mt. Shasta and Weed is that they are both behind Modoc in the SCL standings. If it stays that way, the Braves will jump the Bears and Cougars in the playoff seedings. Tulelake (14-7) is ranked 8th. Trinity (10-14) is 11th.

Division-VI (Top 12 go to playoffs)

Butte Valley (9-7) is tied with Burney (7-10) for 8th. Dunsmuir at 9-6 is 10th. Redding Christian at 20-4 is ranked number-1.

    Girls

Division-IV (Top 12 go to playoffs)

Yreka (12-11) is 9th, behind Wheatland (11-12) and ahead of Gridley (8-16). Sutter at 17-6 is number-1. (more…)

The Dunsmuir Tigers regained the top spot in the rankings by virtue of thumping South League leader Loyalton. While Redding Christian also won, it was against a weak team. So, Dunsmuir’s strength of schedule went up and Redding Christian’s went down. That’s the difference. Now, here’s the bottom line: the Tigers and the Lions tangle this Friday in Palo Cedro for what amounts to the championship game for the North League, as well as the number-one overall seed in the playoffs.

Other movers were Butte Valley going back up to number-three, and Loyalton slipping to 4th. Remember in the notes about the rankings a couple of weeks ago, where I said watch out for the Princeton Eagles? Well, they’ve won their last three games, two against teams that are at least .500, and have moved up to number-five.

    1. Dunsmuir (9-0) 13.44

    2. Redding Christian (9-0) 12.89

    3. Butte Valley (7-2) 9.33

    4. Loyalton (6-2) 9.25

    5. Princeton (5-3) 8.25 (more…)

With their statement win over Butte Valley, the Redding Christian Lions have moved to the top of the SiskiyouYouth.com 8-Man Rankings. Butte Valley slipped from 3rd to 4th. Dunsmuir had been tied with Redding Christian but dropped to 2nd based on strength of schedule. The Tigers have Loyalton, which moved up to 3rd, and Redding Christian left to play in the regular season. Redding Christian’s other game is against Hayfork.

    1. Redding Christian (8-0) 13.63

    2. Dunsmuir (8-0) 12.88

    3. Loyalton (6-1) 10.29

    4. Butte Valley (5-2) 9.14

The top of the 8-man rankings has changed with Redding Christian moving into the 1-spot, and Butte Valley dropping to number-2. Dunsmuir remains in 3rd. Redding Christian is ranked above Butte Valley and Dunsmuir mainly because, at this point, the Lions have played the toughest schedule. However, that is likely to change after this week, when Dunsmuir and Butte Valley square off. One issue with the rankings is how games that were scheduled against Liberty Christian are going to be handled. Some teams have counted it as a forfeit win, others have just dropped it off their schedules.

    Rankings

    1. Redding Christian (6-0) 13.00

    2. Butte Valley (4-0) 11.25

    3. Dunsmuir (6-0) 10.83

    4. Loyalton (4-1) 8.40 (more…)

I have a feeling that there will be some texts and emails coming my way about these rankings. So, before you grab the phone or the keyboard, let me explain how the rankings were done.

It’s pretty simple. The ranking score is based on win/loss record and strength of schedule. There is no division record component, since 8-man doesn’t play outside its own division. There are two parts to strength of schedule. First, you get some points for playing teams that have a record of .500-.699, and more points for playing teams with records of .700 or above. The big strength of schedule points come in when you beat good teams (I know this is a new concept compared to most NSCIF playoff ranking systems). Beat teams with a .500-.699 record, get good points. Beat teams .700 or above, and get even more points.

Finally, there is slightly more emphasis on won/loss record than on strength of schedule. Why? It’s because won/loss happens on the field. Strength of schedule happens on the phone…or text…or email..or whatever.

I feel pretty comfortable that the top three and maybe the top four teams belong in the top three or four places in the rankings. Whether or not they’re in the right order will be sorted out to a large extent in the next couple of weeks. One glitch in the strength of schedule is that that the top teams haven’t really met up yet. I suspect that once again the North League is way stronger than the South League. So, some teams have been getting strength of schedule points for beating teams with good records that might not be all that strong.

    Rankings

    1. Butte Valley (3-0) 12.67

    2. Redding Christian (5-0) 12.60

    3. Dunsmuir (5-0) 11.00

    4. Tulelake (3-1) 9.25 (more…)

What’s that smell? Oh yeah, it’s the smell of flying pigskins (well, synthetic pigskin or something, anyway). Point is, high school football starts next Friday in Siskiyou County, and this is just a little teaser form the 8-man scrimmage hosted by the Dunsmuir Tigers at Dunsmuir City Park on Saturday.

In addition to the 2011 NSCIF runner-up Tigers, the defending section champion Butte Valley Bulldogs were in attendance. Also getting in some reps were the section champions from two years ago, the Hayfork Timberjacks, as well as the Happy Camp Indians, and Mercy Warriors. (more…)
