When it comes to youth sports, the media gives the larger schools in our area most of the attention. It’s sort of a natural thing. That’s where the most students are, and generally the larger schools are the most accessible. However, when you take the time to check out the outlying schools, you can find some real gems.
One of the most successful teams in the last few years has been the Happy Camp Lady Indians. The girls made it to the section championship last year, and they are 10-2 going into the playoffs this season. On a team full of
talented players, one of the brightest gems is senior post player Aja Conrad.
I’ve been following Aja’s progress for a while. Last year, Aja was a diamond in the rough. It was obvious she had talent and played well all season, but there was room to grow. This season, Aja has been dominating in the Evergreen League, where she is second in scoring with 15.7 points per game. Not only does Aja average double figures in scoring, but has scored in double figures every game except one. In the season opener against Etna, she had nine points in Happy Camp’s win. (more…)
