Going into their game against the Lost River Raiders in Merrill on Friday night, the Etna Lions were probably feeling pretty good after their win over upper division U-Prep the prior week. However, the Raiders, an Oregon small school powerhouse, delivered a severe reality check. Never mind the creative officiating, the Raiders ran over, around , and through the Lions for most of the night on the way to a 42-13 win.

After a fairly even first seven or eight minutes, the Raiders went on a 75-yard march that led to the first touchdown of the game, and a 7-0 lead with 1:14 left in the first quarter.

The Raiders then picked off an Etna pass, returned it to the Lion eight-yard-line, and quickly added another TD, making it 14-0 just 16 seconds into the second quarter. The flood gates had opened and Lost River was happy to go with the flow. By halftime, it was 20-0. (more…)

The were plenty of pads popping when the Etna Lions junior varsity and the Lost River Raider JVs tangled in Merrill on Friday night. In a game that featured bend, but don’t break defense, it was a defensive play that decided the game.

With 3:47 left in the second quarter, a line drive Raider punt went into the back of the offensive line and hit the ground. Lion Zac Hansen scooped up the ball and scooted 30 yards for what would turn out to be the game-winning touchdown. The PAT failed, but the Lions had all the points they would need for the 6-0 victory. (more…)

The Tulelake Honker varsity boys won the championship at the Trinity Tournament last weekend, and were probably feeling pretty good coming into Monday night’s match up with the Lost River Raiders, in Tulelake. The Raiders didn’t appear to be all that impressed, at least not in the first quarter.

After Honker Danny Banderas opened the scoring with a freebie, Lost River put up the next six points on a hoop by Blake Ireland and back-to-back buckets from Connor Hickey, to lead 6-1. The Raiders led by as many as nine points twice in the opening frame, 13-4, on a steal-n-score by Luke Burch, and 15-6, on a basket by Zalin Airitola.

However, the Honkers came to life late in the first quarter and went on an 18-0 run that would last all the way until just 2:56 remained in the first half. A jumper by Max Crawford got things rolling for Tulelake. Two from the charity stripe by Adam Kandra closed out the first quarter, with the score 15-10 in favor of Lost River.

Kandra opened the second quarter scoring with another pair of freebies. A 3-ball from Zac Idrogo tied the game at 15-15, with 7:20 on the clock. Kandra stole the ball and went coast-to-coast to give the Honkers the lead 17-15, with 6:50 left in the half. Banderas hit from downtown, making the score 20-15. Back-to-back buckets by Kandra upped the Honker lead to 24-15. (more…)
