The Mt. Shasta boys and girls teams both took 1st place at the Henley Invitational cross country race on Tuesday.

Lady Bears Ellen Sampson (1:08.42), Julie Ostrowski (21:58.13), Janelle Jaegel (22:29.92) and Kelsie Titus ( 22:59.39) finished 1st – 4th individually in the varsity girls race.

Bears Michael Cook (17:52.06), Chris Morzenti (17:53.14) and Chris Cazneaux (18:17.62) were 2nd – 4th individually in the boys varsity race. The race was won by Todd Delaney (16:51.28) of Mazama. (more…)

The Yreka Miners junior varsity defeated the Mazama Viking JVs 13-2 on Thursday afternoon.

The JVs completed their game at the Yreka High School field despite continuous rain. The varsity contest was called after two innings due to Hibbard Field being unplayable. (more…)

Boys

Klamath Union 56 – Mazama 51

The Mazama Vikings led 9-7 after the first quarter, and 23-19 at the half. A hoop by Klamath Union’s Daniel Bocchi put the Pelicans up 35-33 at the end of the third quarter.

The Vikings regained the lead 42-40, on a bucket by Trevor Garrard, with 5:22 to play in the game. The Pelicans tied it, 42-42, on a basket by Kevin Wynne, and took the lead 43-42 on a Warren Willis freebie.

With the Pelicans leading 52-46 and 1:37 left in the final frame, the Vikings picked up five points on one possession. Viking Zac Hall drained a 3-ball to make it 52-49. There was also a foul called while the ball was in flight, giving the Vikings two free throws. Jimmy Marquit hit both from the charity stripe to make it a one point game, 52-51.

The Pelicans responded with a bucket by Marcus Paschal and a free throw from Donavin Weiser, to extend their lead to 55-51, with 28 ticks left on the clock.. Willis added a freebie to finish out the scoring, making the final 56-51.

Alex Stork led the Pelicans in scoring with 21 points. Willis had 16.

Mazama was led by Hall with 16, and Nolan Rose with 15 points.

Stork was voted tournament MVP and was selected as the Pelicans Offensive All-Tourney. Austin Crawford was Defensive All-Tourney, and Bocchi was Sportsmanship All-Tourney.

Mazama’s Wynne was Offensive All-Tourney. Hall was Defensive All-Tourney, and the “team” got the Sportsmanship award.

Girls

Mazama 60 – Yreka 35

This one was over early, as the Mazama Lady Vikings proved too much for the young Yreka Lady Miners to handle. Mazama led 23-9 after the first quarter, and 36-10 at the half.

Hannah Reynolds led Mazama with 13 points. LeAnn Valenta had 11, and Caileigh Smith put up 9 points.

Yreka was led by Katie Brummett with 9 points. Kelsey Stonier and Ashley Ensminger each scored 6 points.

Mazama’s Reynolds was the tournament MVP. Smith was Offensive All-Tourney. Megan Morris was Defensive All-Tourney, and Valenta received the sportsmanship award.

Yreka’s Kelsey Stonier was Offensive All-Tourney. Kayla Stonier was Defensive All-Tourney, and Madison Williams was Sportsmanship all-Tourney. (more…)

Yreka 42 – Del Norte 31

Dani Deegan got things rolling for the Yreka Miners with a 3-point play the hard way to opening the scoring in the semi-final match against the Del Norte Lady Warriors.

It was the Warriors with the lead at the end of the first quarter, but Yreka outscored Del Norte 14-5 in the second stanza to take a 24-17 halftime lead. The Lady Miners led by nine points at the end of the third quarter, 32-23.

Del Norte came as close as six points, 36-30, with 2:08 left in the game, but Ashley Ensminger took a pass from Kayla Stonier and converted it into an old fashion 3-point play to push Yreka’s lead back to nine points, 39-30, with 1:28 to go.

Yreka will face Mazama for the tournament championship at 6:00 pm on Saturday.

Ensminger led Yreka in scoring with 8 points. Kelsey Stonier and Deegan each put up 7 points. Kayla Stonier added 6 points.

Del Norte was led by Emma Card with 14 points, and Panhia Yang with 8.

Mazama 50 – Klamath Union 42

The Mazama Lady Vikings led, 37-32, over the Klamath Union Lady Pelicans going into the fourth quarter of their semi-final game.

Klamath Union battled back to within a single basket, 42-40, but the Lady Vikings scored the next seven points to push their advantage to nine, at 49-40. LeAnn Valenta started the run with a freebie. Caileigh Smith added a bucket on a put back. Megan Morris dished to Shaylee Totten for a hoop, and Hannah Reynolds added two points from the charity stripe to close out the run.

Reynolds, Morris and Smith each had 11 points in the game for Mazama.

Klamath Union was led by Jackie Gardner with 13 points. Nicole Mee added 9 points. (more…)

Yreka 45 – Etna 39

The Yreka Lady Miners trailed the Etna Lady Lions 21-17 at the half, but outscored Etna 16-7 in the third quarter to take a 33-28 lead.

Yreka led by as many as seven points, 37-30, in the fourth quarter, when Kelsey Stonier stole the ball, passed to Katie Brummett, who then dished to Kayla Stonier for a bucket.

Etna cut the deficit to one point, 38-37, on a hoop by Melissa Berry, with 2:05 to play in the game. However, Yreka scored the next seven points to seal the victory on a freebie by Brummett, a steal-n-score by Ashley Ensminger, two from the charity stripe by Dani Deegan, and another Ensminger steal-n-score.

Deegan led Yreka in scoring with 8 points. Ensminger, Brummett, Kayla Stonier, and Mackenzie Allen all scored 6 points.

Mt. Shasta 36 – Del Norte 40

The Mt. Shasta Lady Bears went into the fourth quarter trailing the Del Norte Lady Warriors, 26-22. Mt. Shasta tied the game at 33-33 late in the fourth quarter on a steal-n-score by Jeanette Ricci, and then took the lead 35-33 when Ricci set up Kathryn Andrus for a bucket with 54 ticks on the clock.

Del Norte’s Emma Card tied the game 35-35, with 20 seconds to play, sending the teams to overtime. The Lady Warriors led the entire OT, and went on to win 40-36.

Mt. Shasta was led by Kathryn Andrus with 16 points. (more…)

YREKA – How good was the Yreka offense against Mazama on Friday night? So, good that they scored all the points in the game for both teams—45 for the Miners and a 2-point safety for the Vikings. The Miners racked up 334 yards of offense, 222 on the ground and 122 through the air.

Yreka made a statement on its first series, marching 80 yards in 13 plays. A Dean Schafer to Ryan Kennedy 15-yard TD strike capped the six-minute drive. Trevor Daugherty added the PAT, making it 7-0 for the Miners.

“Our offensive line tore it up. They made key blocks down field to allow us to gain big yards,” said Schafer via text.

Defensively, the Miners played shutout ball, with the Vikings’ only score coming on a snap that sailed over Schafer’s head and out of the back of the end zone for a safety. Yreka held Mazama under 100 yards in total offense, and sacked their quarterback six times.

“We played as a team and had 11 guys fly to the ball on every play. Our DBs did a great job shutting down the pass, and the front and backers didn’t let anyone up the middle. We got great penetration and keyed our reads all night,” said senior middle linebacker John Durney via text. “We finally came together and played defense like we know how to.”

In addition to the opening drive, the Miners scored on 3-yard and 11-yard runs by Schafer, 44-yard and 11-yard runs by Trestin Kimbrell, a 1-yard run by Tim Maphet, and a 20-yard field goal by Daugherty. (more…)
