Okay, I’m not going to lie. I usually consider going to track and field meets the equivalent of watching grass grow, or on a really good day, paint drying. However, there is one exception–the NSCIF championships. That’s the meet where you see the best of the best the North Section has to offer. It’s the day for awesome achievements, monumental upsets, and sometimes bitter disappointment.
Overall, Siskiyou County athletes did very well on Friday at West Valley High School.
Yreka’s Jena Turner won the 100m Hurdles and the 300m Hurdles, both in section and personal best times. Teammate Ashley Ensminger took 3rd in the 100m Hurdles and 5th in the 300m Hurdles, missing 2nd in the 100m Hurdles by 1/100 of a second. Turner was 3rd in the Long Jump.
John Whelan of Etna literally ran away with the 3200m title, winning by over 20 seconds. Whelan was the top seed in the 1600m, but decided to scratch to concentrate on the 3200.
Mt. Shasta’s Janelle Jaegel won the Pole Vault. Siskiyou County athletes also finished 2nd, 3rd and 5th, with Liz Henson (Yreka), Kara Jackson (Yreka), and Elizabeth Ebrahimy (Weed).
Jaegel and Whelan won the 2013 Norm Mackenzie sportsmanship award
David Sellens III from Yreka was the favorite for the Discus, and wound up 3rd. Sellens, however, bounced back with an upset in the Shot Put, finishing 1st. Dunsmuir’s Jeff Rhoades was second in the Shot Put, and Arturo Villegas (Yreka) finished 5th in the Discus.
A Siskiyou County athlete didn’t win the boys Pole Vault, but the county did grab 2nd -5th place, with Mt. Shasta frosh Garrett Bryan in 2nd with a school record vault. Yreka’s Anthony Whitaker and Thomas Bigelow were 3rd and 4th. Max Michelon from Weed was 5th.
Eli Champman of Mt. Shasta earned a couple of 3rd place finishes, in the 100m and 200m races, despite a bothersome hamstring.
I also want to give a shout out to the Tulelake 4×400 Relay team, which finished 5th. It’s tough for a small school to medal in the relays because it takes four fast runners not just one–something that gives the big schools with much larger talent pools a huge advantage. Nice job Honkers (Dylan Miller, Ansoni Hernandez, Junior Idrogo, Logan Herman).
Other Siskiyou County medalists are listed in the results below.
Event winners qualified for the CIF State Finals. The top five in each of Friday’s events earned medals. (more…)
