There are two things about Siskiyou County sports that are a certainty. If it’s baseball and softball season, you can be certain that it will rain, snow, or do both. And, you can be certain that I’ll get bored with no games to cover and put together the Siskiyou County Girls B-Ball Dream Team list.

As always, when I do these lists, if you don’t see yourself on it, it doesn’t mean that I don’t think you’re a good player or I don’t like you. There can only be 12 on the Dream Team, which means a lot of really good players will be left off.

Ones, Twos, and Threes

Jeanette Ricci (12), Mt. Shasta

Jillian Neel (10), Weed

Ashley Ensminger (10), Yreka

I believe Jeanette Ricci was the best all-around girls basketball player in Siskiyou County this season. She was the point guard on the Shasta Cascade League champion Lady Bears, averaging 9.5 ppg, 4.2 spg, and 3.7 rpg. Ricci hustles, plays tough defense and she’s relentless at both ends of the court. That’s the kind of player I want running my team, and Ricci would be my point guard. Oh, and if you think the points per game total is a bit low, consider that Mt. Shasta was built around defense, and only averaged 40 ppg, which means Ricci accounted for about 25% of the points. (more…)

Mt. Shasta softball coach Joe Spini’s selection for the Pepsi of Mt. Shasta Lady Bear Softball Player of the Week is Sejay Sarti. Sarti is batting .500 so far this season. She went 2/3 with 2 RBI in the second game of Mt. Shasta’s double header sweep of defending NSCIF D-V champion Hamilton last week. Sarti leads the Lady Bears in runs scored, hits, and is second in RBI. (more…)

The Mt. Shasta Bears track and field team didn’t win a single event at the John Orognen Invitational, held at Yuba College in Marysville on Friday. However, the Bears did grab multiple second place finishes.

Leading the way was Eli Chapman, who finished 2nd in the 100m (11.82) and 200m (23.74) races. Chapman’s 200m time on Friday is the best among all North Section athletes this season. The winner of the 200m race at the John Orognen Invitational was Doug Comeman (23.27) from Woodland Christian of the San Joaquin section.

Michael Cook was second in the Pole Vault (10-06.00) for the Bears. Cook’s mark is the best among NSCIF D-III athletes this season.

Janelle Jaegel was second in the Pole Vault for the Lady Bears at 8-00.00. Jaegel’s best so far this season is 8-6.00 at the Siskiyou County Scrimmage earlier this month, tops in NSCIF D-III. Jaegel was also tenth in the Triple Jump at 28-04.00. She has the best distance among NSCIF D-III jumpers at 29-08.50, set at the Siskiyou County Scrimmage. (more…)

Mt. Shasta varsity softball coach Joe Spini’s pick for the Pepsi of Mt. Shasta Lady Bear Player of the Week is Kayla Spini.

Spini had a rather mundane start to the season, only going 5-1 in the circle at the Anderson Small Schools Tourney last weekend. Among her five wins were five shutouts, two perfect games, two no-hitters, and she allowed a whopping two earned runs in six games. Spini also batted .535, with two long balls, three doubles, six runs scored, and six RBI.

Ya know, someday, this girl might be pretty good…ya think? (more…)

West Coast

The Yreka Miners won their fifth straight game with a 9-0 shutout of the Mt. Shasta Bears in Yreka on Wednesday. During those five games, the Miners have scored 66 runs. Their opponents have scored just two.

Yreka’s pitching was dominating on Wednesday. Christian Charles tossed four innings of no-hit ball, striking out eight batters, including the first five he faced. The Bears’ only base runners in the first four innings were Chase Kamla on an error in the second, and Eric Banner on a walk in the fourth inning. Michael Elfgen took over for Charles on the hill in the fifth inning, and continued the pitching mastery. The Bears finally broke the combined no-hitter with a base hit by Brandon Acord in the sixth inning.

Meanwhile, the Miner offense put up nine runs in the first three innings. With one out in the bottom of the first, Michael Shuler reached on an error. Charles ripped a triple to plate Shuler, and later scored on a wild pitch. With two down, Cody Hoff and Gabe Durney were hit by wild pitches. Both runners moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch. Hoff scored when Russell Sweet reached on an error, and Durney came home on a wild pitch to give the Miners a 4-0 lead. (more…)

The first week of high school baseball and softball is in the books, with several local teams turning in strong performances on the diamond. For game scores and stats, check the scoreboard posted earlier.

Softball

The Mt. Shasta Lady Bears are the clear favorites for a 4-peat in the Shasta Cascade League and one of the favorites for an NSCIF D-V title. They showed why at the Anderson Small Schools Tournament this weekend. Mt. Shasta won five straight via shutout, two in Kayla Spini no-hitter style, before falling to defending NSCIF D-IV champion Anderson.

Etna also looked strong at the Anderson tourney under new head coach Harold Bennett. The Lady Lions reached the NSCIF D-V section semi-finals last season, and won the section the prior two years. Etna has finished second to Mt. Shasta in the SCL the last three years and was the last team besides the Lady Bears to win the SCL. This was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the young Lions. Apparently, Bennett has the tools because Etna won their first four games, before finally falling to South Fork.

The Weed Lady Cougars also got off to a good start, taking a pair from Big Valley to open the season on Friday, before losing to last year’s NSCIF D-V runner-up Modoc on Saturday.

Baseball

The Yreka Miners dropped their season opener 10-0 to D-I powerhouse Foothill (8-1), but rebounded with a vengeance in the Etna Marble Mountain Tournament over the weekend. The Miners won all four of their games, by a combined total of 57-2. The Miners (4-1) are one of the favorites to win the Northern Athletic League and the NSCIF D-II championship. (more…)

Three Siskiyou County teams have made it to the semi-finals of the NSCIF playoffs–all from the Evergreen League. Happy Camp advanced on Thursday night, and Tulelake and Dunsmuir won on Friday night. All three teams won on the road.

Remember, the winner of the PremierWest Bank B-Ball Challenge is the team that advances the farthest in the NSCIF section playoffs. The 1st tiebreaker is overall record, which might come into play for the first time this year…just a feeling. The official record for the teams is the one the section uses. To see all the tiebreakers and rules click the link at the end of this article.
