On April 3 District One contestants shone through the bad weather proving why District One is second to none. Contestants competed in two rounds on Saturday because the Friday rodeo was canceled due to bad weather conditions. Competition heated up as contestants struggled to be in the top five in order to qualify for state. Local youth shone as Kayla Johnson won the breakaway and Lane Wilson was second in the steer wrestling. Jordan Spears and Bailey Bidwell are leading the race for the all around. District One recently won top team at The Challenge of Champions on March 19, 20 and 21 in Plymouth California. The District One High School Rodeo Finals will be on April 30 – May 1 at the Redding Rodeo grounds. (more…)

The California High School Rodeo Association’s Challenge of Champions was held March 19-21 at Plymouth, California.

Daniel Ferreira of Fort Jones won the Tie Down Roping event at the Challenge of Champions with a time of 24.23 (11.36, 12.87). Ferreira, along with Brandi Anthony of Red Bluff, took second in team Roping in a time of 23.01 (9.08, 13.93). (more…)

One lesson and Cricket Postma was hooked on reining. That was about a year ago, and now the freshman at Etna High School is looking at the possibility of competing at the American Quarter Horse Youth World Championships in Oklahoma City, in August.

Cricket’s first reining lesson was with Sam Gemaehlich on Pepe, a horse that Cricket’s family had just purchased. That first time on Pepe didn’t go so well. Although a trained reiner, it had been a while since Pepe had been tuned up. So, Cricket really didn’t get the full feeling of reining. That, however, would change. (more…)

YREKA – Locals Daryl Lara and Todd Wilkinson won the coveted Saddle Cow Championship at the Siskiyou Golden Fair rodeo last Saturday night. Nick and John Kraus took second place.
