Etna High School students Ali McEwen (junior) and Darby Hanna (freshman) participated in the 28th annual Whiskeytown Open Water Swim, held on Sunday, September 12, 2010 in Redding California.

The event has a 50-yard youth race, 1 and 2-mile age division races, and 1 and 2 mile masters division races. McEwen and Hanna, both members of the Scott Valley Sharks swim team, swam the 1-mile course and finished in very respectable times for their first open water competition. McEwen finished the race in 33.15 minutes and Hanna came in with a time of 37.09.

There were over 200 swimmers who competed throughout the day in the various divisions and the weather cooperated as temperatures reached the mid-90s. (more…)

yac-300-b.jpgThe 2010 SharkFest Swim Meet was held at the Scott Valley Community Pool in Etna on Saturday and Sunday. Leading the way for the locals were Scott Valley Swim Team’s Katie Eiler who finished 1st in the 15-16 year old age group, and Yreka’s Kaitlyn Solano who was first in the 11-12 year old group.

In the team competition, the Scott Valley Sharks finished third with 614.50 points. Yreka was fifth (401), and the Weed Swim Club was seventh (88). The Anderson Aquagators took first with 1283.50 points. (more…)

The Yreka Swim Team and the Scott Valley Sharks opened their swim season at the Weaverville Waves Invitational Swim Meet. Over 200 athletes competed at the meet last weekend.

The Yreka Swim Team finished fourth with 290.5 points, and Scott Valley was 7th with 114 points.

Top three finishers:
17-18 Girls – Sarah Gross (YST), 1st, 36 pts.
15-16 girls – Katie Eiler (SV), 2nd, 41 pts; Rebecca Gross (YST), 3rd, 32 pts
11-12 Girls – Kaitlyn Solano (YST), 1st, 34 pts.
15-16 Boys – Darian Darrow (YST), 3rd, 24 pts.
13-14 Boys – Michael Lawe (YST), 2nd, 42 pts.

sharkfest08-team-cheer-pic.jpgDuring the early morning hours of Wednesday, July 9, the Scott Valley Swim Team Sharks held their annual Lap-A-Thon fundraiser at the Etna Community Swimming Pool. Sixty-two team members participated in the event, and the swimmers obtained sponsors prior to the event with pledges of a flat rate or a per-lap fee. When the two hour event was done the swimmers had completed a total of 4,747 laps. Emily Travis of Fort Jones swam a total of 146 laps, the most of the day. There were a total of 21 swimmers who completed over 100 laps and the youngest swimmer of the day was Trinity Andrews, age 7.
bookstore-text-click-sized-july.jpg The members of the Shark team are still collecting donations for the event and any one interested in making a contribution can make a flat rate donation, or contact any member of the SVST Sharks and sponsor a per lap rate. Contributions can be sent to P. O. Box 243, Greenview, CA 96037, or contact SVST Board Member Gwen Hampton at 468-5338 for more information.
The Scott Valley Swim Team Sharks have membership of over 90 swimmers this year. The team earned third place at the Sharkfest, and fourth place at the Mt. Shasta Invitational Meet in June. The team will be competing in Red Bluff on July 12 and 13, and in Anderson on July 19 and 20.
