With two nights of regular season basketball remaining, here are the league championship scenarios.

    Northern Athletic League

    Boys

Corning (7-1, 23-2) has won the crown, but not before a surging Central Valley (5-2, 14-11) team put a blemish on the Cardinals NAL record. Yreka (1-6) is tied for last with Lassen.

    Girls

Anderson has locked up an outright championship at 7-0. The Lady Cubs (15-10) play at last place Yreka (1-6, 12-12) on Friday.

    Shasta Cascade League

    Boys

With Modoc’s win over Weed last night, the Braves have won the SCL at 11-1. Mt. Shasta is in 2nd at 9-2, and Weed is 3rd at 8-3. The Bears and Cougars face off on Friday night in Mt. Shasta to determine second place and likely who has the higher seed in the NSCIF D-V playoffs.

The North Section released updated basketball playoff points rankings on Monday. Keep in mind that some coaches are lax when it comes to reporting results, and the NSCIF may not have had accurate info for these rankings.

    Boys

Division-IV (Top 12 go to playoffs)

Yreka (8-14) is ranked 11th, ahead of Colusa (11-12) and behind Lassen (10-15). Orland (20-4) and Corning (22-2) are tied for the top spot.

Division-V (Top 16 go to playoffs)

The Shasta Cascade League has three of the top four spots, with Mt. Shasta (18-5) and Weed (20-4) tied for 1st. Modoc (18-4) is 4th. Liberty Christian holds the 3rd spot at 17-7. The bad news for Mt. Shasta and Weed is that they are both behind Modoc in the SCL standings. If it stays that way, the Braves will jump the Bears and Cougars in the playoff seedings. Tulelake (14-7) is ranked 8th. Trinity (10-14) is 11th.

Division-VI (Top 12 go to playoffs)

Butte Valley (9-7) is tied with Burney (7-10) for 8th. Dunsmuir at 9-6 is 10th. Redding Christian at 20-4 is ranked number-1.

    Girls

Division-IV (Top 12 go to playoffs)

Yreka (12-11) is 9th, behind Wheatland (11-12) and ahead of Gridley (8-16). Sutter at 17-6 is number-1. (more…)

It was the Etna Lady Lions’ Homecoming on Friday night, but it was the Trinity Lady Wolves that eventually made themselves at home in Carl Smith Gym. The Lady Wolves held a one-point advantage at the end of the first quarter, 11-10. Etna grabbed the lead, 22-21. with six seconds left in the first half on a hoop by Sara Hoyt.

Trinity regained the advantage at the start of the third quarter, 23-22, on a bucket by Danielle Duncan. The game was tied at 29-29, with 2:50 to go in the third, but Duncan scored three baskets to Etna’s one free throw, putting the Wolves up 35-30, with 45 ticks left in the quarter.
