Prior to the start of the Shasta Cascade League basketball season, SiskiyouYouth.com and The Intermountain News conducted an SCL coaches’ poll. Here’s how the poll compares to the actual SCL standings at the end of the season.

Boys Poll

In the boys poll. it was Weed that exceeded expectations, finishing in a tie for the title with favored Mt. Shasta. I had picked Mt. Shasta 1st, Trinity 2nd, Etna 3rd, and Weed 4th, same as the coaches–didn’t see Fall River being as strong, and didn’t expect Weed to be as strong.

1. Mt. Shasta

2. Trinity

3. Etna

4. Weed

5. Fall River

6. Burney

7. Modoc

Boys actual

1. Mt. Shasta (9-3)

1. Weed (9-3)

3. Fall River (8-4)

3. Trinity (8-4)

5. Etna (6-6)

6. Burney (1-11)

7. Modoc (1-11)

Girls poll

In the girls poll both Fall River and Weed exceeded the coaches’ expectations, with Fall River tying Etna and Mt. Shasta for 1st, and Weed finishing 4th. I had picked Mt. Shasta to win the league, with Etna 2nd and Weed 3rd. Based on what I had seen in the preseason, I had no clue Fall River would be as strong as they were.

1. Etna

2. Mt. Shasta

3. Burney

4. Fall River

5. Trinity

6. Weed

7. Modoc

Girls actual

1. Etna (10-2)

1. Mt. Shasta (10-2)

1. Fall River (10-2)

4. Weed (5-7)

5. Burney (4-8)

6. Trinity (3-9)

7. Modoc (0-12)

MOUNT SHASTA – The Mt. Shasta Bears kept their hopes alive for a share of the Shasta Cascade League title by eliminating the Trinity Wolves from contention on Tuesday night. With the 75-58 win, the Bears (8-3) sit one game behind the Weed Cougars (9-2) in the SCL standings. The teams collide on Friday night in Weed. A Bear win would make Weed and Mt. Shasta co-champions. A win for Weed means an outright championship for the Cougars.

If you like your basketball action fast and furious, you would have loved the Mt. Shasta v Trinity match up. The Bears put up 23 points in the first quarter to lead 23-14 going into the second frame. Mt. Shasta trailed briefly 5-4 less than two minutes into the game.

A hoop by Eric Thelander gave Mt. Shasta the lead, 6-5. After Ttrinity tied it with a freebie, 6-6, Tim Jaegel drove to the hoop for a bucket and an 8-6 Bear lead—a lead they would not surrender. Bear Andrew Campbell capped off the first quarter scoring with a 3-point play the hard way.

The Bears enjoyed a 6-12 point lead through the second quarter and went to the locker room with a 10-point advantage, 37-27.

Helped by a technical foul against a Bear player, Trinity made a surge late in the third quarter. With the score 49-39, Trinity’s Justin Jeangerard hit both technical foul shots, to make it 49-41. Wolf Kenny Swain added a free throw, 49-42. A Mark Maumasi put back for the Bears made it 51-42. Jeangerard nailed a 3-ball and Trever Martin scored to bring the Wolves within four points, 51-47 at the end of the third quarter.

The break between quarters was all the Bears needed to get back on track. Mt. Shasta scored the first nine points of the fourth quarter. Campbell opened the scoring with a reverse lay up, 53-47. Jake Padula drained a trey, 56-47. A Thelander put back made it 58-47. Two from the charity stripe by Gene Kenyon upped the Bear lead to 13 points, 60-47, with about five minutes to play in the game.

Trinity would cut the margin below 10 points only once the remainder of the way, 60-51, as the Bears went on to a 17 point win,, 75-58.

Gene Kenyon led Mt. Shasta with 20 points. Tim Jaegel put up 16, including three 3-pointers. Eric Thelander scored 15, and Jake Padula had 10 points.

Trinity’s Justin Jeangerard led all scorers with 27 points. Dakota Hayward had 8, and Jared Atterberry scored 6 points for the Wolves.

While the Bears are battling the Cougars this Friday, Trinity (16-8, 7-4) will be at Modoc (1-19, 1-10)

The Lady Cougars (1-7, 1-0) defeated the Trinity Lady Wolves (0-10, 0-1), 42-38, on Tuesday night.

Weed dominated the first five minutes of the game, sprinting out to a 13-0 lead. Kera Vogel took a dish from Sierra Skeen and cooked up a 3-point play the hard way to open the scoring. Skeen followed with a hoop, 5-0. Nicolette Neel added a pair of freebies on a technical foul against Trinity for an incorrect player number, 7-0. Skeen made it 13-0 on back-to-back 3-balls.

The Lady Wolves finally got on the board with 2:57 left in the first quarter via a freebie that started a 7-0 run for Trinity. The first five points came at the charity stripe. Katrina Mounivong scored off a rebound for Trinity’s first field goal of the game, making it 13-7, with about a minute to go in the quarter.

After Skeen fed Vogel for another basket, 15-7, Mounivong scored two from the line, 15-9. Neel drained a trey for Weed, 18-9. Stevie Zeck answered with a 3-pointer, and then added a steal-n-score to cut the margin to four points, 18-14, going into the second quarter.

Weed led 24-17 at the half, and 33-26 at the end of three quarters. The Lady Cougars led the contest from start to finish. But, except for the game-opening run, were never able to pull away from the pesky pack of Wolves, winning by four points 42-38.

Weed’s Sierra Skeen and Nicolette Neel led all scorers with 14 points a piece. It was Skeen’s first game back from an early season injury. It was Neel’s second game back from injury. Kera Vogel contributed 10 points.

Katrina Mounivong and Taylor Christensen each had 8 for Trinity. Stevie Zweck added 6 points.

After Trinity (7-3, 0-1) had come from behind to take the lead late in the game, Weed’s Jake West scored the game winner for the Cougars (10-2, 1-0) on a drive down the lane for a lay up.

The Cougars led almost the entire game, with Robert Gonzales opening the scoring with a put back. Luke Curran scored for the Wolves to tie it at 2-2. Weed took the lead 4-2 on a bucket by Jake West, and continued to lead until three minutes into the fourth quarter.

The Cougars led 12-8 at the end of the first quarter, and pushed their advantage to as many as 10 points in the second quarter. Snipers Tanner Shelton and Robert West hit consecutive 3-balls to open the second quarter, making the score 18-8. Weed enjoyed an 8-point advantage at the half, 29-21.

After a lackluster third quarter, Weed had the lead 34-28. Then, the contest heated up in the final frame.

Trinity’s leading scorer this season, Justin Jeangerard opened the quarter with a bucket, 34-30. A Jeangerard steal-n-score cut the Cougar lead to a single basket, 34-32.

Weed scored on an inbound play from J. West to Gonzlaes, 36-32. Dakota Hayward added a basket, and Trever Martin hit a freebie to bring Trinity to within one point, 36-35, with 6:30 left in the game.

Two from the charity stripe for J. West made it 38-35. Jeangerard dished to Curran for a Trinity hoop, 38-37. A put back by David Fischer gave the Wolves their first lead of the night, 39-38, with 5:19 on the clock. Curran scored to make it 41-38.

There was 4:30 to play, when Shelton nailed his second trey of the night to knot the contest at 41-41. Curran and J. West exchanged buckets, 43-43. The Wolves went back on top, 45-43, on a Fischer put back. R. West went to the line for a pair of free throws, with 1:40 remaining, and a chance to tie. He hit one of two, leaving Trinity in the lead, 45-44.

The Cougars found themselves trailing with only 18 seconds remaining on the clock, and were forced to foul, putting Jeangerard on the line. Weed grabbed the rebound, when Jeangerard missed the front end of the 1-and-1. Trinity was 5/15 from the line, and Weed was 16/22 in the game.

Weed Coach Mike Carpine called time out with 12 ticks on the clock. The first option on the final Cougar play was for J. West to hit R. West as he flashed across the paint. When R. West flashed, he drew two defenders, opening up a lane for J. West to drive to the hoop for the winning bucket, with four seconds to go.

Jake West led the Cougars in scoring with 15 points. Robert West and Robert Gonzales each had 10 points.

Justin Jeangerard’s 15 points was tops for Trinity. Luke Curran had 9, and Kenny Swain scored 7 points.

Weed hosts Fall River (10-2, 1-0) on Friday. Fall River defeated Mt. Shasta on Tuesday night, 51-48.

Trinity plays Gridley (7-3) on Thursday.
