svpt-small.jpgETNA – The Trinity Wolves took advantage of three walks, three errors and a base hit in the top of the second inning to put up five runs against the Etna Lions. Trinity went on to win the game 6-0.

The Wolves and the Lions both finished third in their respective pools at the Marble Mountain Baseball Tournament, leading to their match up on Saturday afternoon. Trinity went 2-2 overall at the tourney, and Etna was 1-3.

The first five Trinity batters in the second inning—Robert Parish, Doul Ryan, Johnathan Simmons, Jimmy Leaton, and Logan Johnson—all scored, with Johnson having the only hit, an RBI single.

Trinity added its other run in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Leaton singled, and then moved to second base on a two-out hit by Ryan Higgins. Eric Watson doubled home Leaton, making the score 6-0. (more…)

Opinion by Ray Wolf

Okay, I was going to do a full story on the Trinity v Vacaville Christian second round state playoff game, with full props to members of both squads. But, it seems that the Vacaville Christian Falcons’ coaching staff couldn’t be bothered with putting their players’ numbers on MaxPreps. So, I decided that I can’t be bothered with finding out who was who. When Trinity played Liberty Christian in the section final, the Patriots decided to switch up some of their numbers so they didn’t match what was posted on MaxPreps. I went ahead and made a call to find out who was who, and did the full story–not this time.

Seriously, are these schools trying to be sneaky, or are these things just oversights? I can’t really say for sure, but I never have had a whole lot of love for private schools as it relates to high school sports anyway. I can’t say my view has changed for the better.

As far as the actual game goes, it was another great one. The Falcons were led by some kid with a “5″ on his jersey, and had an 18 point lead, 60-42, with about five minutes left in the third quarter. I’d really love to give this kid the credit he deserves because he was an amazing player who was lightening quick and put up 27 points. But, like I said…. (more…)

Opinion by Ray Wolf

Thanks to the Trinity Wolves and Liberty Christian Patriots, there is no reason for me to ever watch another high school basketball game. Why? It’s because after the Wolves and Patriots’ epic battle for the NSCIF D-V basketball crown on Friday, I have already seen the best high school game ever.

Of course, many might ask how could a D-V game in the North Section possibly be the best high school game ever? How could two relatively small schools in a section that rarely has an impact on the state level in basketball produce the best game ever?

My answer is: what could possibly be better than two of the most evenly matched teams imaginable playing a high-speed, high-intensity, double overtime section championship game?

It was a game where Trinity’s stud Justin Jeangerard hit a fade away 3-pointer with 12.8 seconds to play in regulation that appeared to be the game winner.

Then, Liberty’s Otar Pkhakadze banked in a contested, off balance, prayer of a shot from well beyond the arc to tie the game as the buzzer sounded, sending it into overtime, 70-70. (more…)

y-ad-1-click.jpgWEED – The Weed Cougars soccer squad opened their Shasta Cascade League season with a 7-1 thumping of the Trinity Wolves.

Although Trinity was on the board first with a goal by Kody Bigham in the 15th minute, it was all Cougars after that.

Carlos Sanchez tied the match in the 18th minute on a booming free kick from at least 40 yards out. Salvador Avila put the Cougars up, 2-1, two minutes later, with an assist from Usmaro Sanchez.

Sanchez scored the next two Weed goals at the 27-minute mark, with Avila assisting, and at 30 minutes, with an assist from Chris Vancil. (more…)

West CoastPrior to the start of the Shasta Cascade League basketball season, SiskiyouYouth.com and The Intermountain News conducted an SCL coaches’ poll. Here’s how the poll compares to the actual SCL standings at the end of the season.

Boys Poll

In the boys poll. it was Weed that exceeded expectations, finishing in a tie for the title with favored Mt. Shasta. I had picked Mt. Shasta 1st, Trinity 2nd, Etna 3rd, and Weed 4th, same as the coaches–didn’t see Fall River being as strong, and didn’t expect Weed to be as strong. (more…)

sis-dist-ad-300.jpgMOUNT SHASTA – The Mt. Shasta Bears kept their hopes alive for a share of the Shasta Cascade League title by eliminating the Trinity Wolves from contention on Tuesday night. With the 75-58 win, the Bears (8-3) sit one game behind the Weed Cougars (9-2) in the SCL standings. The teams collide on Friday night in Weed. A Bear win would make Weed and Mt. Shasta co-champions. A win for Weed means an outright championship for the Cougars.

If you like your basketball action fast and furious, you would have loved the Mt. Shasta v Trinity match up. The Bears put up 23 points in the first quarter to lead 23-14 going into the second frame. Mt. Shasta trailed briefly 5-4 less than two minutes into the game. (more…)

sis-dist-ad-300.jpgWEED – The Weed Lady Cougars picked the perfect time to get their first win of the season-the start of Shasta Cascade League play. The Lady Cougars (1-7, 1-0) defeated the Trinity Lady Wolves (0-10, 0-1), 42-38, on Tuesday night.

Weed dominated the first five minutes of the game, sprinting out to a 13-0 lead. Kera Vogel took a dish from Sierra Skeen and cooked up a 3-point play the hard way to open the scoring. Skeen followed with a hoop, 5-0. Nicolette Neel added a pair of freebies on a technical foul against Trinity for an incorrect player number, 7-0. Skeen made it 13-0 on back-to-back 3-balls. (more…)

scm-ad.jpgWEED – Two of the Shasta Cascade League’s top title contenders squared off to open the league season on Tuesday night, with the Weed Cougars winning in the final seconds over the Trinity Wolves, 46-45. After Trinity (7-3, 0-1) had come from behind to take the lead late in the game, Weed’s Jake West scored the game winner for the Cougars (10-2, 1-0) on a drive down the lane for a lay up.

The Cougars led almost the entire game, with Robert Gonzales opening the scoring with a put back. Luke Curran scored for the Wolves to tie it at 2-2. Weed took the lead 4-2 on a bucket by Jake West, and continued to lead until three minutes into the fourth quarter. (more…)
