Tulelake v Etna (8) front

TULELAKE – Before the game even started, the Tulelake Honkers found themselves in a bit of a bind. Leading scorer Nick Staub (20 ppg) rolled an ankle in warm ups and was unable to play. As it turned out, it didn’t matter.

valley-tire-red-300.jpgThe Honkers showed they have the hearts of lions, as they overcame a double digit deficit in the first half to defeat the Etna Lions, 51-44, in their NSCIF Division-V playoff opener on Wednesday night.

The eleventh-seeded and upset minded Lions used a 17-4 run to open a 12-point lead over the sixth-seeded Honkers early in the second quarter. Trailing 8-7 with 3:12 left in the opening quarter, Erik Anaya put the Lions up 9-7, with an assist from Clint Eastlick. A steal-n-score by Brent Davis made it 11-7. Eastlick put back a rebound, 13-7. Honker Jacob Woodson temporarily interrupted the run with a put back, making it 13-10. Anaya dished to Andy Menne for a hoop to resume the Etna run, 15-10. It was Davis to Anaya to make it 17-10. An Anaya put back upped Etna’s advantage to nine points, 19-10. Tulelake scored on a nice inbound play from Zane Burrier to sophomore Adam Kandra with four seconds to go in the first quarter, leaving Etna with a 19-12 lead heading into the second frame. (more…)

Weed v Tulelake (3) front

Patterson CreekWEED – The Weed Lady Cougars got back one of their three injured senior starters on Tuesday. But, even the return of Nicolette Neel’s hustle and determination wasn’t enough to hold off the Tulelake Lady Honkers. After a close first quarter, Tulelake out ran and out muscled the depleted Lady Cougars for a 51-29 victory.

Weed led just once in the game. After a hoop by Tulelake’s Gabby Rascon and a pair of freebies by Rosana Chavolla gave the Lady Honkers a 4-1 advantage, the Lady Cougars strung together three straight baskets. A put back by Weed’s Kera Vogel made it 4-3. Neel grabbed a long rebound and was off to the races for an easy lay up, giving the Lady Cougars a 5-3 lead. A steal-n-score by Jessica Gardner upped Weed’s lead to 7-3, with 2:40 left in the first quarter. However, that was as good as it would get for the Lady Cougars. (more…)

Shasta, Tulelake, Weed, and Yreka. The winning team’s players and coaching staff will receive custom made “Team of the Year” T-shirts designed by Golden Grotto.

The winner of the challenge will be the girls or boys team that is most successful during the 2009/2010 season, which is defined as the team that advances the furthest in the North Section CIF playoffs. The challenge will end at the finish of the section playoffs and does not include any state playoff games because Division-VI teams (Butte Valley, Dunsmuir, and Happy Camp) are not eligible for state playoffs. Tiebreakers also do not include state playoff games. Games against JV teams do not count. (more…)

WEED – The Weed Cougars won their 11-man football game against the Tulelake Honkers without even playing. The Honkers were unable to field a viable 11-man team due to multiple players suffering from illness. The result was a forfeit win for the Weed Cougars. However, the squads did crack helmets in a 9-man game. Weed won the on-field contest 21-6. The 9-man game was unofficial, but you wouldn’t have known it by the play on the field. (more…)
