Grapplers from the Shasta Cascade League gathered at Dunsmuir High for the league championships on Saturday. The Dunsmuir Tigers won their first ever league wrestling championship, led by C.J. Palmer’s 2^nd place finish. The Tigers won the small schools division with 56 points, ahead of Burney (42), Fall River and Big Valley.

Etna took 2^nd in the big schools division with 123 points, behind Modoc’s 183 points. Tulelake was 4^th with 34.5 points.

Etna’s Anthony Garcia (106 lbs), Joey Defaria (113), Hayden Kaae (182), and Jack Souza (220) earned All-League honors with 1^st place finishes. Lions Donovan Appler (152) and Cecyl Stout (132) were 2^nd. Luke Schwall (106) was 3^rd. Earl Summers (126) and Lance Taylor (145) were 4^th.

Garcia won the 106-pound division with a 15-6 decision over Cody Tiffany of Modoc. Defaria pinned Jake Lewis of Big Valley in the second round for the top finish at 113. Kaae pinned Dunsmuir’s Trent Johnson at 182 pounds, and John Souza earned a 14-0 major decision over Modoc’s Matt Froeming.

Tulelake’s Derek Wood (138) finished 2^nd, Lorenzo Reyes (126) was 3^rd, and Ernan Reyes (132) finished 4^th.

Perhaps the match of the meet belonged to Etna’s Earl Summers and Lorenzo Reyes from Tulelake with a blood and guts third-place bout at 126 pounds. Reyes controlled the match for the first two periods building a 7-2 advantage. Summers scored with a take down near the end of the second and trailed by three points to start the third. After a couple stoppages for a bloodied nose on Reyes, Summers struck again near the end of the match, nearly pinning Reyes. Time expired before the pin, but Summers scored a 3-point near-fall to tie match at 7-7.

In the overtime, Reyes quickly shot to the legs and scored the take down for the 9-7 win.

The Division III/IV championships will be held in Etna on Saturday, February 18.

The Tulelake Honkers remained perfect in the Evergreen League at 6-0 (18-3), with a 61-42 win over the Butte Valley Bulldogs in Dorris on Friday night. The Dawgs, however, did not go quietly. Although the Honkers led 10-9 at the end of the first quarter, they had to come from behind to do so, on a pair of Zac Idrogo freebies with seven seconds left in the opening quarter.

The Honkers led by as many as 12 points in the second quarter, 25-13, but the Bulldogs came back within seven points by halftime via a 7-2 mini-run. Two from the charity stripe by Bulldog John Levesque made it a 10-point game, 25-15, with 2:21 to go until the intermission. A Honker put back by Logan Herman pushed it back to a 12-point advantage, 27-15. Butte Valley’s Gustavo Lopez hit a turn around jumper, 27-17. The final three points of the half were courtesy of a couple of Honker fouls and three free throws by Butte Valley’s Levesque, making it 27-20.

Tulelake opened the second half scoring with buckets from Idrogo and Adam Kandra, to increase its lead to 11 points, 31-20. The Honkers would maintain a double-digit margin for the remainder of the game, on the way to the 61-42 win.

Kandra led all scorers with 27 points, as well as grabbing 17 boards and snagging 7 steals. Max Crawfrod put up 11 points, pulled down 6 rebounds, and had 5 swipes for the Honkers. Danny Banderas added 7 points.

Butte Valley was led by Levesque with 9 points. Andrew Lucitskii contributed 8, and Colten Struble had 7 points.

Tulelake hosts Happy Camp (5-1, 6-5) on Tuesday.

Butte Valley (2-4, 5-13) goes to Dunsmuir (4-2, 12-7) on Tuesday.

The first time the Tulelake Lady Honkers and the Butte Valley Lady Bulldogs met, it took over time to decide the game in Tulelake’s favor, 60-57. On Friday night in Dorris, it appeared that the squads might be headed for another nail-biter. After Butte Valley took an early lead, Tulelake came back to tie the contest, 12-12, at the end of the first quarter. The game remained close going into the intermission, with the Lady Honkers holding a 25-20 lead.

The second half, however, was just about all Lady Honkers. Amanda Madden opened up the third quarter scoring with a freebie, making it 26-20, starting a 10-2 Tulelake run. Cierra Gribble made it 28-20 with two from the charity stripe. Then, Sabrina Gribble dropped in a 3-ball from somewhere around Macdoel, upping the Lady Honker advantage to 31-20. Butte Valley’s Anna Austin interrupted the run, with a hoop at the 4:08 mark, 31-22. Madee Boyd answered with back-to-back buckets, to complete the run, and give Tulelake a 35-22 lead. Tulelake would open up a 14-point gap by the start of the fourth quarter, 41-27.

Consecutive 3-pointers to open the final frame by Lady Bulldogs Paige Porterfield and Ruby Gonzalez, brought Butte Valley back within eight points, 41-33, with 7:09 left to play. That didn’t even phase the Lady Honkers who responded by out scoring the Lady Bulldogs, 23-5, the rest of the way for a convincing 64-38 win.

Boyd led the Lady Honkers with 15 points. Cierra Gribble put up 12, and Maria Chavolla added 11 points.

Butte Valley was led by Gonzalez with 12 points, including three 3-balls. Lydia Hill had 9 points. Haley Reynolds and Paige Porterfield each added five points.

Tulelake sits at the top of the Evergreen League at 6-0, and hosts Happy Camp (3-3) on Tuesday.

Butte Valley (3-3) goes to Dunsmuir (1-5) on Tuesday.

The Tulelake junior varsity boys came away with a 57-45 win. Butte Valley trailed 15-2 early in the 1st quarter, but rallied back to take the lead 24-23 at the half. Tulelake held a 2-point advantage going into the final frame, 32-30.  The Honkers out scored the Bulldogs, 25-15, in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

The Tulelake junior varsity Lady Honkers went home with the 48-24 victory.

The Tulelake Honkers (12-3) traveled to Weed to take on the Cougars (4-8) on Monday night. On paper, it was a mismatch–a blow out waiting to happen. However, the laws of nature say that a honker is rarely safe around cougars, especially when there’s a “silver fox” involved. While, the Honkers escaped with a win, it didn’t come easy.

At 13-2, with less than three minutes to play in the opening quarter, it did look like Tulelake would cruise to a win. At the end of the first frame, the Honkers led 17-11. By halftime, it wasn’t likely that “easy” or “cruise” were words being used in the Honker locker room, as the Cougars had battled back to tie the game at 27-27, on a steal-n-score by Noah Traylor.

The Cougars came out of halftime and took a 33-27 lead on six straight points to open the third quarter. A 3-point play the hard way by Josh Rogers made it 30-27. Then, Rogers drained one from the football field, making it 33-27.  Two Honker hoops by Zac Idrogo sandwiched around an Adam Kandra put back tied the game at 33-33, with 4:20 to go in the quarter. A bucket by Max Crawford with 25 seconds to go in the third, gave Tulelake a 37-35 lead going into the final frame.

The first three and a half minutes of the fourth quarter belonged to Kandra and his Honker teammates. Kandra dished to Crawford for a basket to opening the scoring in the quarter, 39-36. Kandra then put up the next 10 Honker points, including a trey and an old fashion 3-point play, pushing Tulelake’s lead to eight points, 49-41.

The Cougars were facing a 10-point deficit, 53-43, with 2:55 to play, when they made a final comeback push. Back-to-back 3-balls by Brandon Williams and Rogers, made it 53-49, with 2:10 to go. Crawford scored for the Honkers, 55-49. Hoops by Rogers and Traylor, made it a one possession game, 55-53, with 36 ticks on the clock.

A Kandra put back, made it 57-53, with 19 seconds left. Williams nailed a 3-ball for the Cougars with :07 on the clock, giving Weed a glimmer of hope at 57-56. However, Crawford sealed the Honker win, 59-56,with a pair from the charity stripe.

Kandra put up 23 points for the Honkers. Crawford had 13, and Idrogo added 10 points.

Rogers led Weed with 17 points, including three treys. Matthew Morgan nailed four 3-balls and had 16 total points. Williams hit three 3-pointers, and had 11 points. Traylor contributed 10 points.

Tulelake hosts Butte Valley (2-9) to open up Evergreen League play on Friday. Weed goes to Burney (4-8) for the start of its Shasta Cascade League season.
