pwb-logo.jpgSiskiyou Youth and PremierWest Bank are sponsoring the 2008 Basketball Challenge for all varsity basketball teams that Siskiyou Youth covers: Yreka, Mt. Shasta, Etna, Weed, Dunsmuir, and Happy Camp. The winning team’s players and coaching staff will receive custom made “Team of the Year” T-shirts designed by Golden Grotto.

The winner of the challenge will be the girls or boys team that is most successful during the 2008-09 season, which is defined as the team that advances the furthest in the North Section CIF playoffs. The challenge will end at the finish of the section playoffs and does not include any state playoff games because Division-VI teams (Dunsmuir and Happy Camp) are not eligible for state playoffs. Tiebreakers also do not include state playoff games. (more…)

clarity-300.jpgThe North Section CIF released updated volleyball playoff points rankings today.

Dunsmuir (11-8) is tied for 7th with Butte Valley (8-5) in Division-VI, and is in position to host a first-round playoff game. However, Big Valley (10-13-3) ranked 11th has won at least a share of the Evergreen league and has defeated Dunsmuir twice in league play. Big Valley will likely jump over Dunsmuir in the playoff seedings. Happy Camp is ranked 15th (2-9), and Tulelake is 19th (3-21) (more…)

Mt. Shasta (4-5) stayed in the 6th position in D-III, ahead of Trinity (2-7), and behind Live Oak (4-5). With a win over Trinity this Friday, Mt. Shasta should jump past Live Oak, based on head to head competition. Mt. Shasta beat Live Oak earlier this season. (more…)

weed-v-fall-river-tourney-front.jpgOpinion by Ray Wolf

Sometimes, people define a team by its last game of the season. Sometimes, that does a great injustice to what the team has accomplished. To let the Weed Cougars’ 3-1 loss to the Fall River Bulldogs last night be the last word on their season would be an injustice. For the record, Fall River caught Weed’s future superstar goalkeeper away from the net twice for goals. The first coming a little under 20 minutes into the match, and the second with just eight minutes or so to play.

In between, Jose Luquin used a free kick to set up Salvador Avila for a header to tie the score at 1-1, less than two minutes after Fall River had scored its first goal. mittan-ad-300.jpgThe final Bulldog goal came in the last minute of play on a breakaway, while the Cougars were in an all out effort to tie the match.

One of the significant positives to come out of the match was the high level of support from the community. The crowd may have been the biggest ever for an SCL game in Siskiyou County. It looked more like a football crowd than a soccer crowd. And, when you have a football guy in the announcer’s booth yelling “Goooooooal” when the Cougars’ scored, you know soccer has arrived in Weed. (more…)
