The Weed Lady Cougars came into the match up undefeated in the Shasta Cascade League, and 14-2 overall. The Mt. Shasta Lady Bears were sub .500 overall, at 8-9, but were also undefeated in SCL play. When the final horn sounded, and a last gasp Lady Cougar shot had drawn iron, but no net, it was the Lady Bears that stood alone at the top of the league standings, with a 37-35 overtime victory.

Weed put up the first five points of the game, but the Lady Bears rattled off nine in a row, to take a 9-5 lead. Mt. Shasta would not trail again until 33-32 in overtime. The Lady Bears led 12-9 at the end of the first quarter, 23-12 at the half, and 28-18 at the end of three quarters.

The Lady Cougars battled back in the fourth quarter, out scoring the Lady Bears, 14-4, in the frame to send the game to overtime tied at 32-32. (more…)

The last time the Etna Lions won two varsity boys basketball games in a row? February 19, 2010–twenty-three months ago. Coming into Friday night’s game against the Weed Cougars, Etna had won just three times in those 23 months, all against the Burney Raiders. They also hadn’t beat the Cougars since January 30, 2008, nearly four years. That changed in dramatic fashion, as the Lions rained 3-balls on the Cougars Winter Carnival celebration, and came away with a 73-65 win. It was not only the Lions second straight win, but also their second straight 70+ point offensive performance (71-60 over Burney on Tuesday).

Weed led at the end of the first quarter, 14-11, but there were already glimpses of the coming Lion 3-point onslaught. With the Cougars leading 4-0 on buckets by Tommy Haosouphanthong and Noah Traylor, Etna’s Colby Rimmer hit back-to-back treys to give the Lions a brief 6-4 advantage. It was the only time Etna led in the first quarter.

Nicky DelaRosa opened up the scoring in the second quarter with a 3-pointer, to tie the game at 14-14. Weed’s Trevor Shaffer answered right back from beyond the arc, putting the Cougars back on top 17-14. However, the Lions then embarked on a 13-2 run.

Kainen Krueger converted a dish from Rimmer into a basket to get the run rolling. Rimmer drilled a 3-ball, giving the Lions the lead 19-17, with six minutes to play in the half. DelaRosa hit a shot to make it 21-17. Rimmer hit from Lake Shastina, to make the score 24-17, with 5:01 to go. Traylor scored to interrupt Etna’s fun, 24-19. But, Rimmer came right back with a deuce and a trey, to give the Lions a 10-point lead, 29-19, with 3:08 on the clock. At the half, Etna was up by 11 points, 37-26. (more…)

The Yreka Miner boys varsity cut down the Weed Cougars on Wednesday night in Miner Gym, 71-60. Weed had the lead at the end of the first quarter, 18-17, and at the half, 31-30.

However, the Miner defense smothered the Cougars in the third quarter, allowing only four points. Yreka put up 16 points in the frame to gain an 11 point advantage, 46-35, going into the fourth quarter. Both squads put up 15 points in the final quarter, leaving Yreka with a 61-50 win.

Jayson Sadowski led the Miners with 13 points. Tyler Johnson and Jeremy Cox eaxh put up 11 points for Yreka.

The Cougars were led by Noah Traylor with 22 points. Matthew Morgan hit a trio of treys for 9 points. (more…)

The Tulelake Honkers (12-3) traveled to Weed to take on the Cougars (4-8) on Monday night. On paper, it was a mismatch–a blow out waiting to happen. However, the laws of nature say that a honker is rarely safe around cougars, especially when there’s a “silver fox” involved. While, the Honkers escaped with a win, it didn’t come easy.

At 13-2, with less than three minutes to play in the opening quarter, it did look like Tulelake would cruise to a win. At the end of the first frame, the Honkers led 17-11. By halftime, it wasn’t likely that “easy” or “cruise” were words being used in the Honker locker room, as the Cougars had battled back to tie the game at 27-27, on a steal-n-score by Noah Traylor.

The Cougars came out of halftime and took a 33-27 lead on six straight points to open the third quarter. A 3-point play the hard way by Josh Rogers made it 30-27. Then, Rogers drained one from the football field, making it 33-27.  Two Honker hoops by Zac Idrogo sandwiched around an Adam Kandra put back tied the game at 33-33, with 4:20 to go in the quarter. A bucket by Max Crawford with 25 seconds to go in the third, gave Tulelake a 37-35 lead going into the final frame. (more…)

The Tulelake Lady Honkers and the Weed Lady Cougars matched up in each team’s final preseason game on Monday night, in Weed. The Lady Cougars came into the contest at 9-1, and riding a five game winning streak. Their only loss came to a then undefeated Biggs team. Tulelake suffered a lopsided defeat at St. Mary’s last week, and entered the game at 7-5. When the final horn sounded, the Lady Honkers had pulled off an upset, winning 42-38.

Weed went out to a 5-2 lead to start the game on a basket by Destinee Jones, and three free throws by Jennifer Marshall. The Lady Honkers tied it, when Cierra Gribble set up Maria Chavolla for what turned out to be a 3-point play the hard way. The Lady Honkers grabbed the lead, 7-5, on a hoop by Claudia Garcia and finished the first quarter up 10-8.

With the score tied, 13-13, in the second quarter, the Lady Cougars took temporary control. A pair of freebies by J. Marshall gave Weed the lead, 15-13. Two from the charity stripe by Karene Marshall made it 17-13. Jillian Neel hit a bucket, upping the Cougar advantage to six points, at 19-13. Madee Boyd connected for Tulelake, 19-15. Neel hit another shot with nine seconds left in the half, sending the teams to the locker room, with Weed ahead, 21-15.

The Lady Honkers came out and scored the first eight points of the second half to grab a 23-21 lead. A hoop by Garcia opened up the second half scoring, 21-17. A freebie and then a bucket from Rosario Jaime made it 21-20. Then Boyd nailed a shot from downtown to give Tulelake the lead 23-21. Weed regained the advantage on an old fashion 3-point play by J. Marshall, 24-23, with 1:12 left in the quarter. A put back by Chavolla gave the Lady Honkers a 25-24 lead going into the final frame. (more…)
