To parents, coaches, and athletes,

You may notice that the photos are mainly of Yreka skiers and boarders. That’s because the photographer, Kris Prusko, was there specifically to shoot for Yreka. Through his generosity, SiskiyouYouth.com obtained the photos. When the Mt. Shasta Ski & Board Park was under previous ownership and advertised with the media I was involved with, I went personally to do the photos. For the past few years I’ve been reaching out to the PR and marketing person to work on promoting the Park on SiskiyouYouth.com. However, that person and/or ownership has decided to do very little local advertising, apparently assuming that the locals would just come anyway. Instead, they have spent their money out of town. I guess they’re dreaming of attracting huge crowds from elsewhere, while taking the locals for granted.

The difficulty for me in doing the photos and video personally is simple logistics and revenue. I live well over an hour from the Park, and it’s pretty tough to convince myself to spend the time and money to get there and then sit in the snow all day, without at least getting in a couple of runs. Under past ownership, we did a trade: advertising for a season pass. I always thought it worked out great. They got nearly free advertising, and I was able to do a bit of skiing (not really much because of my limited time, but at least some), and provide what I thought was really good coverage.

I’ve offered to do all kinds of cool things to help promote the Park, all to no avail. I still very much want to do so. The Mt. Shasta Ski & Board Park is very important to the local economy, and it just makes sense to help it succeed. Could it be that the Park simply doesn’t value the kids and families that have made SiskiyouYouth.com Siskiyou County’s top website for youth sports info and coverage? I would think that families would be the most desired group of people for the Park to reach.

Anyway, if the Mt. Shasta Ski Park is ever able to see the light, I can promise awesome ski & board race coverage, as well as doing everything I can to help promote the Park. If not, then I guess not.

Weed varsity girls coach Bob West’s choice for the Pepsi of Mt. Shasta Lady Cougar Basketball Player of the Week for the week of 1/15 – 1/22 is Destinee Jones. Jones put up 15 points on the Etna Lions last week, dominated the paint, and started off the scoring for the night with a 3-point play the hard way.

Congratulations Destinee. Hope you enjoyed that 12-pack of Pepsi.

The Weed Lady Cougars came into the match up undefeated in the Shasta Cascade League, and 14-2 overall. The Mt. Shasta Lady Bears were sub .500 overall, at 8-9, but were also undefeated in SCL play. When the final horn sounded, and a last gasp Lady Cougar shot had drawn iron, but no net, it was the Lady Bears that stood alone at the top of the league standings, with a 37-35 overtime victory.

Weed put up the first five points of the game, but the Lady Bears rattled off nine in a row, to take a 9-5 lead. Mt. Shasta would not trail again until 33-32 in overtime. The Lady Bears led 12-9 at the end of the first quarter, 23-12 at the half, and 28-18 at the end of three quarters.

The Lady Cougars battled back in the fourth quarter, out scoring the Lady Bears, 14-4, in the frame to send the game to overtime tied at 32-32.

Mt. Shasta’s Jeanette Ricci scored all five of the Lady Bear points in the OT period, on a trey and a deuce.

Mt. Shasta was led by Janelle Jaegel with 12 points. Kathryn Andrus had 7, and both Sejay Sarti and Ricci had 6 points.

Karene Marshall led the Lady Cougars with 13 points. Jillian Neel had 9, and Tyresha Leonard put up 6 points.

Mt. Shasta (4-0, 9-9) hosts Modoc (1-4, 8-7) on Tuesday. Mt. Shasta beat Modoc in Alturas, 38-30, in their first SCL meeting.

Weed (4-1, 14-3) goes to Fall River (3-1, 12-5) on Tuesday. Weed beat Fall River 52-43 at home earlier in the SCL season.

This was a great game that could have been even better. One official called about 70-80% of the fouls. A large portion were of, at best, the ticky-tack variety, and some were simply not fouls. The result was that each team had two key players that did not finish the game. This is basketball, not checkers or baseball. Hopefully, the association will send two competent officials, instead of only one, to the rematch in Weed. That game will likely decide the SCL championship, and will have major implications for Division-V playoff seeding. It would be a shame to have either one of these teams denied a fair opportunity for a championship due to sub-par officiating.

The Mt, Shasta Bears boys varsity team celebrated Winter Carnival by rolling over a depleted Weed Cougar squad 75-42, on Friday night.

The Bears led 17-6 after the first quarter, and had a 20-point cushion at the intermission, 37-17. Mt. Shasta closed out the third quarter with a 61-27 lead, and cruised to the 75-42 win.

The Bears had eight players in the scoring column, with Clayton Cool leading the way with 15 points via five 3-balls, as well as 5 swipes. Logan Gress put up 14 points, including four 3-pointers. Dylan Padula had 12 points, 4 rebounds and 4 steals. Kegan Snure and Cody Waite each put up 8 points and pulled down 5 boards.

Weed was led in scoring by Noah Traylor with 17 points, and Trevor Shaffer with 9 points.

Mt. Shasta (3-1, 12-6) occupies 3rd place in the Shasta Cascade League, and hosts 2nd place Modoc (4-1, 10-6) this Tuesday. The Bears fell to Modoc in Alturas earlier in SCL play, 57-52.

Weed (1-5, 6-13) is in 5th place in the SCL and goes to league-leading Fall River (4-0, 15-3) on Tuesday. Fall River defeated the Cougars in Weed, 66-46, in their 1st SCL meeting.

Great junior varsity game, with varsity intensity and pace. Weed won it, 53-48. It will be fun watching these guys go at it for the next couple of years.

The Mt. Shasta Lady Bear junior varsity squad pulled off the upset on Friday night, defeating the Weed Lady Cougar JVs, 35-19.

The Sisson 7th graders won, and the Weed Elementary School 8th graders won.
