The first week of high school baseball and softball is in the books, with several local teams turning in strong performances on the diamond. For game scores and stats, check the scoreboard posted earlier.

Softball

The Mt. Shasta Lady Bears are the clear favorites for a 4-peat in the Shasta Cascade League and one of the favorites for an NSCIF D-V title. They showed why at the Anderson Small Schools Tournament this weekend. Mt. Shasta won five straight via shutout, two in Kayla Spini no-hitter style, before falling to defending NSCIF D-IV champion Anderson.

Etna also looked strong at the Anderson tourney under new head coach Harold Bennett. The Lady Lions reached the NSCIF D-V section semi-finals last season, and won the section the prior two years. Etna has finished second to Mt. Shasta in the SCL the last three years and was the last team besides the Lady Bears to win the SCL. This was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the young Lions. Apparently, Bennett has the tools because Etna won their first four games, before finally falling to South Fork.

The Weed Lady Cougars also got off to a good start, taking a pair from Big Valley to open the season on Friday, before losing to last year’s NSCIF D-V runner-up Modoc on Saturday.

Baseball

The Yreka Miners dropped their season opener 10-0 to D-I powerhouse Foothill (8-1), but rebounded with a vengeance in the Etna Marble Mountain Tournament over the weekend. The Miners won all four of their games, by a combined total of 57-2. The Miners (4-1) are one of the favorites to win the Northern Athletic League and the NSCIF D-II championship. (more…)

Three Siskiyou County teams have made it to the semi-finals of the NSCIF playoffs–all from the Evergreen League. Happy Camp advanced on Thursday night, and Tulelake and Dunsmuir won on Friday night. All three teams won on the road.

Remember, the winner of the PremierWest Bank B-Ball Challenge is the team that advances the farthest in the NSCIF section playoffs. The 1st tiebreaker is overall record, which might come into play for the first time this year…just a feeling. The official record for the teams is the one the section uses. Weed Lady Cougars Jillian Neel and Karene Marshall could have set up lawn chairs beyond the arc in the first half of their first round NSCIF D-V playoff game in Tulelake on Tuesday night. The duo combined for seven of Weed’s eight first half 3-balls, on the way to a 34-21 halftime lead. The Lady Honkers would finally make an adjustment in the second half, but it was too late. Seven-seed Tulelake was unable to make up the deficit on the 5th ranked, but 10th seeded Lady Cougars who hung on to win 50-42.

Marshall and Neel hit back-to-back treys to open the game, giving Weed a 6-0 advantage. Tulelake came back to tie the contest, 6-6, on a hoop by Cierra Gribble, two freebies from Maria Chavolla, and a bucket by Madee Boyd off a pass from C. Gribble.

The Lady Cougars regained the lead, 9-6, on a 3-pointer from Marshall. A put back by Tulelake’s Rosario Jaime made it 9-8. Jaime then stole the ball and set up Boyd for an easy score, giving the Lady Honkers their only lead of the game, 10-9, with 1:09 left in the first quarter. (more…)

The Mt. Shasta Bear and Weed Cougar boys junior varsity teams came into Friday night’s game tied at the top of the Shasta Cascade League JV standings, at 8-1. Weed had defeated Mt. Shasta earlier in the season at Mt. Shasta, and Weed had lost in Fall River.

Like their first SCL meeting, the Bears and Cougars played a highly competitive contest that came down to the final seconds.

With 5:01 to play in the game, the squads were knotted at 37-37. Aidan Hagarty put Weed in front, 39-37, with his trademarked spin move in the paint. Two from Cesar Gonzalez drew the Bears even, 39-39, with 3:38 to go. (more…)

Truly, I don’t know where to begin with this story. But, I’ll start by saying that the game tonight between the Mt. Shasta Lady Bears and the Weed Lady Cougars is a great example of why I would rather watch high school hoops than the NBA.

There were no multi-million dollar players, no billionaire owners, just two teams of girls that played their hearts out for the championship of a league that very few people outside of the CIF North Section even know exists. No, ESPN wasn’t there, nor FOX. Heck, even the Redding Record Searchlight wasn’t there.

But, those that were there witnessed a great small school girls basketball game. Mt. Shasta won 32-31, but don’t let the low score fool you. This wasn’t one of those chuck up a shot with 20 seconds on the shot clock, miss, and go do the same thing at the other end type of games. It was intense in-your-face defense by both squads that kept the score down. Every shot was contested, every loose ball had multiple players diving on the floor. Every screen was for real. There was no jogging back on defense.

The intensity was for good reason. The Lady Bears came into the game knowing they already had a share of the Shasta Cascade League title. However, in order to ensure a home game for the first round of the NSCIF D-V playoffs, they needed to win the crown outright.

The Lady Cougars needed a win to grab a share of the SCL crown, and a win to ensure that they would receive the seeding they deserve in the playoffs.

Weed led the game almost the entire way, by as much as eight points. Mt. Shasta led twice, 30-29, with 1:07 to play in the game. And, 32-31 with :00 on the clock. (more…)
