The fans that traveled were not disappointed as the Chargers dominated the number two seeded Warriors from the South with a win 46-21.

The offense started quickly as they moved down the field on a series of plays that ended with a seven yard touchdown run by Drew Robles. The next two drives, lead by the strong arm of Tyler Currie, ended on a 19-yard touchdown pass to Stevie Albers, and a twenty yard touchdown pass to Eddie Robles.

The game was also full of exciting returns. D. Robles returned a 78-yard punt for a touchdown. Workhorse Tyler Hockaday had a 53-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, and Braden Whitehouse contributed a 3-yard touchdown run.

The Chargers racked up 203 total rushing yards: 51 passing yards and 181 punt/kick off return yards on the day. The Chargers kicker, E. Robles, went 5 for 6 extra points on the day. The Chargers O-line (Tyler Smith, Zach Woodruff, Zane Allen, Jonathan Bridgewater, Jovani Cabrera-Guevara, Aaron Freeze, Andrew Daugherty, Aden Stryker and Scott Robinson) played a huge role in Saturday’s game with key blocks.

The defense held tough against a determined Warriors offense. Tristen Foseca, Derek Howard, Eric Fernandes, Thomas Colla, Aaron Durney, Max Simon, Garrett Ryder, Colten Dickinson, Joseph Betts, Cody Jensen, and Wyatt Wood limited the Warriors to only two offensive touchdowns. Anthony Garcia led the defensive backs with 3 deflected passes and an interception. The Chargers had 50 team tackles, five deflected passes, one fumble recovery and one interception on the day. Hockaday and E.Robles led the team with 8 solo tackles a piece.

The Chargers will move to the second round of the playoffs as they face the Corning Lions for the second time this season in Central Valley on Saturday at 2:00 pm. The game was a tough battle in the first meeting. The winner of the game will advance to the NorCal Fed Divison II Championship the following weekend.

Midgets

The Yreka Chargers went to Yuba City this last weekend to a playoff game against the Honkers. The Charger Midgets really showed their skills and strength against the Yuba City Honker’s.
The Charger’s took control for the first half dominating the field with a score of 14-12, in favor of Yreka.

The second half was a shear nail bitter. The Charger’s would score than the Honker’s would turn right around and score. The Charger Midget’s showed there strength as a tream on the field. This being the Charger Midgets last game of the season it proved to be a very exciting as well as emotional one with the final score being 32-28 Honker’s. The seasons over, no one wants it to be but it was one to be proud of. Good job boys.

Mighty Mites

The Yreka Charger Mighty Mites were invited to play an exhibition game against the Central Valley Falcons before the playoff games began. Every Charger Mighty Mite fought incredibly hard both offensively and defensively. Offensively, Skylar Conrad scored three touchdowns this game; all three touch downs were right up the middle breaking through the Falcons defensive line. Jake Peterson could not be stopped, as usual, and he too scored a touchdown. These touchdowns could not have been possible without the incredible blocking that the offensive line provided. Thanks to, Travis Hedin, Antonio Fernandez, Randall Hughes, Wesley Ward, Makayla ten Berge, Devon Applewhite and Travis Arwood for keeping their blocks.

The Falcon Mighty Mite team struggled against the Charger defense. Every Charger was on his/her toes; Skylar Conrad, Donovan Wilson, Jai Case and Travis Arwood all had tackles in the back field. Wesley Ward made a great fumble recovery taking the falcons back to the fifty yard line. Jai Case forced a ball carrier 30 yards backwards before taking him down. Davon Ruiz had several assisted tackles. But, his most memorable moment was when he did something no other Mighty Mite had done this year. Ruiz made the team’s first interception!

The Corning Lions were a tough competition for the Charger Mighty Mites both offensively and defensively. The Charger Mighty Mites put forth every effort while battling the Corning Lions. First quarter defense was strong but not strong enough for the Corning Lions; the charger Mighty Mites made the Corning Lions fight for every positive yard that they gained. Great tackles were made by Devon Applewhite, Davon Ruiz, Wesley Ward, Jake Peterson and Skylar Conrad. Makayla ten Berge had an outstanding tackle in the third quarter. Offensively Travis Arwood, Travis Hedin, Randal Hughes, Antonio Fernandez and the rest of the Charger offensive did a great job blocking and running the ball; the fumbles at the goal line however kept bringing the Mighty Mites back to the 40 yard line.

Jr. Pee Wees

The Yreka Chargers Junior Pee Wees took on the 4-1 Corning Lions. The Chargers JPWs started off the game with the ball and on the first play from scrimmage Tyraye Bush scored on a 60 yard touchdown run. The Lions answered with a touchdown on their first possession. The Chargers JPWs scored three more touchdowns in the first half with a 50-yard touchdown run by Tyraye Bush, a 35-yard touchdown run by Jeremy Persing and a 45-yard touchdown run by Tyraye Bush. The Lions scored one more time in the first half.

In the second half the Chargers JPWs scored on a 15-yard touchdown run by Jeremy Persing. The Chargers JPWs kept the Lions out of the end zone in the second half showing that their defense is one of the best in the game.

All in all, the Chargers JPWs showed why they are tied for first place in the division with a league record of 5-0-1, the same record as Central Valley. The Chargers JPWs will travel to Central Valley for the championship game in the JPW division.

Pee Wees

On Saturday, October 24, the Yreka Chargers Pee Wee football team played their final home game of the 2009 season against the Corning Lions. The game was dominated by defense all day. The Yreka Chargers defense made it really hard for Corning to get any yards in the first half. With smashing hits made by the D-Line which included Juan Cota, Dominic Villagomes, Tyler Hedin, David Ruiz and Evan Shinar, it was very hard for the Lions to run up the middle. And when the Corning Lions couldn’t run, they tried the passing game, but with no luck. The outstanding play of cornerbacks Chase McDonald and Lane Clark along with safety Christian Martinez and the power hitting of linebackers Parker Sanders, Blake Batchelor and Patrick Bigelow made the passing game obsolete. As the first half came to an end, the score was tied, 0-0.

The second half saw the Chargers Blue Defense come out with the same intensity as the Red D. With fire in their eyes, Connor Lawe, Charles Lopez, Roman Vulyak, Gabriel Hughes, Tyler O’Gorman and Josh Hansen played every down until the whistle blew. The Chargers offense tried to get on the board with some punishing runs by Patrick Bigelow and Parker Sanders, but the Chargers just could not penetrate the Lions defense. And, with just a couple of minutes left in the game, the fans starting thinking overtime. But overtime was just that, a thought. The Corning Lions scored, and with the extra point field goal made the end score 8-0. The Yreka Charger Pee Wees would like to thank everyone that has volunteered for their team this past year and to all the fans. They would also like to thank their parents for all the support and love. See you next year and GO CHARGERS!!!!

Midgets

The Yreka Charger Midgets wrapped up their regular season on Saturday by playing the Corning Lions. The Chargers were mauled by the Lions 41-7. Poor tackling was again Yreka’s nemesis as the Lions roared up and down the field.
Yreka’s lone score came on a bootleg by Kaden Culp. Andrew Andreas tacked on the PAT. Andreas also had a sack. Trystan Howard played tough for the Chargers as did Jacob Maphet. Quaid Blanchard had a solid game from his LB/WR positions. The Yreka Chargers Midgets travel to Yuba City Saturday October 31st to take on the Honkers in the first round of the playoffs.

Last weekend, the Charger Mighty Mites took on the Central Valley Jr. Falcons. It was a competition against equals, as they battled to a tie. The two Mighty Mite teams played aggressively on both sides of the ball, all the way to the end of the fourth quarter. The hard to take down Skylar “The Wreckn’ Ball” Conrad scored another touchdown for the season as did Jake “The Snake” Peterson. Defensively all the Charger Mighty Mites played at their best. Devon Applewhite made impressive tackles, as did Wesley Ward. Many fumbles were caused by the Charger defense making for a very exciting fourth quarter. We have one more game left against the Corning Lions this next Saturday at 8:45 am.

Jr. Pee Wees
On Saturday, October 17, the Yreka Chargers Junior Pee Wees traveled to Central Valley to take on the unbeaten JR. Falcons. It was a hard fought battle and at the end of the game the score was tied, bringing both teams to a league record 4-0-1. The Chargers Jr. Pee Wees started off the game by scoring on a 35 yard touchdown run by Tyraye Bush. On this drive, and all day long, the offensive line, including Dylan Frick, Jarred Weiser, Delbert Hensen, Anthony Sedenjo, Payton Charlesworth, Cage Hubbard and Dalten Lester did a great job of blocking. The Jr. Falcons answered back with a touchdown drive of their own. In the 2nd quarter the Chargers got the ball moving again and Tyraye Bush scored on a 20-yard touchdown run up the middle.

In the second half, the Chargers Jr. Pee Wees defense held the Falcons on their first drive and the Jr. Pee Wees offense came up running. Jeremy Persing had a 35-yard run, then Devin Gomes added a 14-yard run. Robert Giannini capped the drive off with a 1-yard touchdown run up the middle. The Jr. Falcons answered back in the 3rd quarter and scored a touchdown. In the 4th quarter Tyraye bush had a 33-yard touchdown run, but the Falcons came back and scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter ending the game in a tie.

The Chargers Junior PeeWees overall record is now 5-1-2 and league record is 4-0-1.

Pee Wees
The Central Valley Falcons ended the Yreka Chargers PeeWee’s bid for a playoff spot with a 12-7 win over the Chargers on Saturday. Hayz Lantz started the game strong with the first tackle of the game, knocking his opponent out of bounds. Central Valley responded by turning up the heat, scoring twice against the Chargers’ mighty defense.
With the Falcons leading 12-0 after the gritty first half, the Chargers added a glimpse of hope with a 33-trap play that the offense loves to run.

While the offensive line held off the CV defense, Patrick Bigelow exploded with a 60-yard touchdown run. The entire run was aided by the “see it to believe it” blocking of the masterful Lane Clark; who managed to hold off two defenders the whole way. Also included in the Bigelow play were Caden Corbin, Dylan Quigley, Melkay Cisneros and Bryce McWilliams; who led the blocks. Dominic Villagomes added to the score by running in the extra point.

More Charger highlights: Parker Sanders ran solid the entire game. Ryan Bridenstine and Payton Dickinson connected yet again with two nice passes. Chase McDonald had several nice runs on offense and great open field tackles on defense. Tyler O’Gorman disrupted many of Central Valley’s plays by chasing down the quarterback all day. Roman Vulyak had great corner plays with some very nice solo tackles. Bigelow was also a very strong presence on defense.

“Great nail-biter of a game,” said Head Coach Neil Bridenstine, “Very exciting!”

Jr. Midgets
On a sunny afternoon in Central Valley, thunder and lighting struck the Jr. Falcons after the Yreka Chargers took the field and won 20-0.

Tyler Hockaday and Drew Robles rushed for 194 combined yards with each scoring a touchdown. Eddie Robles steam-rolled for a 2-yard touchdown. These hard earned yards were aided by a determined offensive line of Jovani Cabrera-Guevara, Andrew Daugherty, Zach Woodruff, Zane Allen, Aaron Freeze, Tyler Smith, Tyler Frost, Aiden Stryker, Cody Jensen, and Jonathan Bridgewater who blocked all day for the running backs.

QB Tyler Currie had a light workout connecting on 2 of 4 passes and picking up a crucial first down on one of the TD drives. The Charger team racked up 213 total yards and 3 touchdowns for the day. For a second week in a row the defense kept their opponents out of the end zone. Max Simon, Colton Dickinson, Garrett Rider, Stevie Albers, Scott Wallace, Wyatt Wood, Joseph Betts, Eric Fernandes, Aaron Durney, Dustin Yates, Anthony Garcia and Tristen Fonseca had numerous tackles throughout the day. D. Robles lead all teammates with a total of 9 solo tackles.

As a team, the Chargers had a total of 38 solo tackles, two fumble recoveries, and a well timed interception by Braden Whitehouse. Whitehouse leads the Charger Jr. Midgets with 5 interceptions in the season.

The team is on a 4 game winning streak which makes their league standing 4-1 which is good enough to guarantee a spot in post season playoffs.

The Chargers will face their toughest opponent at home this Saturday against the Corning Lions who are undefeated. Come out and cheer on your team for our last home game for 2009.

Midgets
The Yreka Chargers Midgets traveled to Central Valley on Saturday to take on the undefeated Falcons. Yreka played the Falcons tough in the first half trailing 20-16 at the break. Yreka’s scoring was led by Michael Schuler who threw a TD to Michael Lawe and then had a TD reception from Kaden Culp. Andrew Andreas tacked on both PAT conversions for Yreka’s final tally.

Central Valley showed their size and depth in the second half, eventually wearing down the Charger’s. The Falcon’s rolled up 4 second half scores that Yreka could not answer. Each and everyone of the charger Midget boys showed there strength against the Falcons and are ready to show more of their strength as they prepare for their final league game, this Saturday at home against Corning.

The Yreka Chargers Football and Cheer organization would like for all Chargers Fans to show up Saturday and support our kids in their last home game of the year.

The Yreka Chargers Mighty Mite defense was at its optimum this past Saturday against the Willows Coyotes. The Coyotes barely had a chance to get off the fifty yard line against the Charger defensive line of Wesley Ward, Travis Arwood, Skylar Conrad, Antonio Fernandez and Randall (RV) Hughes. Devon Applewhite had an outstanding tackle in the backfield as did Wesley Ward and Hughes.

Skylar “The Wreckn’ Ball” Conrad ran for two touchdowns in the second quarter, right through the Coyote defense. Donovan Wilson also did a good job stepping in as center. Ward had a very exciting 15-yard run followed by an impressive 25-yard run by Jai Case. All of the positive yardage and touchdowns gained by the Yreka Chargers could not have been accomplished without the offensive efforts of Jake Peterson, Earl Croy Jr., Travis Hedin and Arwood. Arwood was an essential blocker by constantly driving the opponent down the field and opening up holes.

Junior Pee Wees

The Yreka Chargers Junior Pee Wees took on the Willows Coyotes at Miner Stadium last Saturday. The Chargers came out throwing the ball and completed several passes, moving the ball forward. Tyraye Bush completed the first drive of the day with a 2-yard touchdown run up the middle. Jeremy Persing scored the second touchdown with a 10-yard run to the right side. In the second half, the Chargers went back to the air. Bush completed a 48-yard touchdown pass to Dalton Lester. Cale Cool caught the fourth Charger touchdown on a 12-yard passing play from Bush with no time left on the clock in the second quarter.

The Chargers Jr Pee Wee defense again stepped up and kept the Coyotes out of the end zone in the second half. The Willows Coyotes scored their only touchdown in the second half. The Charger offense moved the ball well in the second half but did not score any more touchdowns. Cornerback Izaiah Martinez had an open field tackle on the near side of the field to help the Charger defense contain the Coyotes. The Chargers Jr. Pee Wee record is now 4-0-0 in League play and 5-1-1 overall.

Pee Wees

On a cold October day, the Yreka Charger Pee Wees came with their minds on a win against the Willows Coyotes. This game was dominated by the Chargers Defense. Evan “the Machine” Shinar shined all day proving that he is a force to be reckoned with. Shinar had multiple tackles and never left his post. Along with Shinar, Tyler Hedin, Patrick Bigelow, Tyler O’Gorman, Gabe Hughes, Christian Martinez, Dominic Villagomes, and the rest of the defense, held the Coyotes to one late second half score.

On the offensive side of the ball, Quarterback Ryan Bridenstine connected with Payton Dickinson in mid-stride for a 30-yard touchdown. The Offensive line consisting of Brian Gutierrez, Bryce McWilliams, Caden Corbin, Tyler Wagy, and others protected their QB all day. With one running touchdown each by Parker Sanders and Chase McDonald, the Chargers took the win with a score of 20-6. The Yreka Charger Pee Wees are 2-2 in league and set their sights on the Central Valley Falcons next week.

Jr. Midgets

The Charger Junior Midgets had an outstanding game on Saturday against the Willows Coyotes at Miner Stadium.

The defense had a total of 6 interceptions which included 2 by Braden Whitehouse and 1 by Tristen Fonseca for a 36-yard touchdown. The defense also recorded 4 pass deflections and 2 forced fumbles. Tyler “The Beast” Hockaday and “Fast” Eddie Robles led the day with 7 tackles each. Colton Dickinson, Zane Allen, Jovani Cabrera-Guevara, Dustin Yates, Andrew Daugherty, Thomas “The Animal” Colla, Eric Fernandes, Wyatt Wood, Garrett Rider, Zack Woodruff, Cody Jensen, Aden Styker, Tyler Frost, Jonathan Bridgewater, Tyler Smith, Aaron Freeze, Scott Robinson, Joseph Betts and Aaron Durney kept a pack of Coyotes at bay and did not allow a single point on the day.

Offensively the Chargers racked up 343 yards of total offense. That included 3 rushing touchdowns by running backs Drew Robles, Anthony Garcia, and Braden Whitehouse. Drew Robles finished the day with 6 carries for 160 yards.

Quarterback Tyler Currie went 4 for 6 passing for a total of 56 yards, including a perfectly thrown 15-yard touchdown pass to Stevie Albers. Dylan O’Gorman kicked a two point conversion to add to the scoring for the day. At game end, the score was 32-0 in favor of the Chargers.

Head Coach Rob Walton led all coaches with the most consumption of water for the day as the team dumped their water bucket on his head after the win. The Chargers have won three straight games to up their league standing to 3-1 and 4-2 overall as they head to battle the Central Valley Jr. Falcons at their house next Saturday.

Midgets

The Yreka Chargers Midgets played host to the Willow Coyotes on Saturday and were handed their first league defeat, 22-6. Yreka scored on their first possession, a nice pass from Kaden Culp to Michael Schuler to take 8-0 lead. The Chargers held Willows on their first 2 possessions and then found a spark. Yreka drove to the Willows 5-yard-line only to turn the ball over on downs. Willows took advantage of that turnover and scored on a 95-yard run on the ensuing play for a huge momentum swing.

Yreka was able to move the ball only to have opportunities squandered by fumbles. Yreka fumbled 5 times, with 3 occurring inside the red zone. The loss drops the Charger Midgets to 3-1 in league. Yreka travels to Central Valley next Saturday to take on a tough Jr. Falcon squad who are undefeated in league play.

This was a scrimmage style game with half of the Chargers Mighty Mites taking turns filling positions for the South Siskiyou team. Jake Peterson, scored two touchdowns for the South Siskiyou team, while Davon Ruiz, ran his first ever touch down for the Yreka Chargers Mighty Mites. Next week, don’t miss the 8:45 am face off against Willows. If you haven’t seen these little guys play you are really missing out.

Jr. Pee Wees
On Saturday, October 3, 2009, the Yreka Chargers Junior Pee Wees took on the South Siskiyou Knights in Mount Shasta. At the start of the game, the Knights only had seven players, so the Yreka Chargers Jr. Pee Wees sent several of their own players to the Knights to make the teams even. Both teams played hard hitting football during the game. The Charger Jr. Pee Wee had five different players score a touchdown this week, Tyraye Bush, Jeremy Persing, Robert Giannini, Cale Cool and Devin Gomes. Caleb Hammond also got his first rushing attempts of the season and gained several hard fought yards. The Chargers Junior Pee Wees’ defensive squad played tough and kept the Knights offense out of the end zone all day. The Chargers Junior Pee Wees record is now 4-1-1 overall and 3-0-0 in league.

Pee Wees
On a very cold day in Mt. Shasta, the Yreka Charger Pee Wees gave their all against cross county rival, the South Siskiyou Knights, winning the game 32-6.

It wasn’t clear whether Defensive Lineman David Ruiz played the game for his Afghanistan-bound Marine Corps brother or if he was playing because of the cross county rivalry. Either way, Ruiz played like a soldier on a mission. With two sacks, two fumble recoveries and a strong presence in the backfield the entire day, Ruiz proved that he is a force to be reckoned with.

Scoring for the Chargers were Parker Sanders with two touchdowns, Lane Clark and Chase McDonald each with one, and a beautiful touchdown pass from QB Ryan Bridenstine to the skillful hands of Payton Dickinson. On the extra point try, Patrick Bigelow charged the ball in for extra points. With the win, the Yreka Chargers Pee Wees move to 1-2 in league. Come out and see your Pee Wees play the Willows Coyotes this weekend.

Jr Midgets
No full report. Charger Jr. Midgets beat South Siskiyou for the Grudge Match Trophy.

Midgets
The Yreka Chargers Midgets traveled to Mt. Shasta Saturday to take on the South Siskiyou Knights. Yreka continues to gain momentum by knocking off the Knights 26-7. The Yreka Chargers Midgets found the end zone early and often, leading 26-0 with 6:00 min left in the second quarter.

A huge spark for the Chargers was a Michael Schuler 60-yard kickoff return. Yreka capitalized on the return by driving to the South Siskiyou Knights 19-yard-line, where Schuler found the end zone on an outside sweep. The Yreka Chargers Midgets defense forced a 3-and-out and Yreka quickly drove into Knight territory. A Kaden Culp to Schuler pass play struck pay dirt and Yreka was in command. Booming kickoffs by Andrew Andreas pinned the Knights deep all day. With South Siskiyou starting inside its own 20 yard line, the Yreka Chargers Midgets defense stopped the Knights cold. Casey Gusaas blocked a punt which was recovered in the end zone by John Crane making the score 20-0 Yreka.

Yreka capped its scoring on a Culp bootleg around right side. The Yreka Chargers Midgets defense held the Knights all day with stifling efforts by Tristain Howard and Gabe Durney. Howard and Durney played the corner positions to perfection. Culp had a jarring hit from safety, while Brett Todd along with Josh Johnson provided great efforts. Reno Pitts once again showed his prowess by anchoring the Offensive and Defensive lines. Casey Gusaas also snagged a one handed interception to thwart a late South Siskiyou threat. The Chargers move to 3-0 in league and take on Willows at home next Saturday.

It was another exciting Saturday for the Yreka Chargers Mighty Mites. They were well prepared to battle the Anderson team. This week the Yreka Charger Mighty Mites showed how much they have developed into a cohesive team, as every Mighty Mite gave it their all, both offensively and defensively.

Quarterback Skylar Conrad had the most impressive play of the game. Breaking at least three tackles, Conrad managed to reach the end zone while dragging two Anderson Mighty Mites with him for the touchdown. That touchdown was by far the hardest earned touchdown of the season. If you haven’t made it to a Yreka Chargers Mighty Mite game this season, there are still two home games left! Come check us out! Mighty Mites play at 8:45 am

Jr Pee Wee

On Saturday, the Yreka Chargers Junior Pee Wees took on the Anderson Jr. Cubs in Yreka. The Charger Jr. Pee Wees started off on fire and dominated the entire game.

On the first possession of the game, the Chargers marched down the field with two pass completions to Cale Cool and Jeremy Persing, followed by a 30-yard outside run by Tyraye Bush. On our second offensive possession, Persing made a 40-yard touchdown run with a great block by Cool. The Chargers defense stepped up next and kept Anderson from getting a first down on their first few possessions with great tackling and an interception by Robert Giannini. Our third possession started with a 40-yard pass play to Dalton Lester that ended with a 7-yard touchdown run by Devin Gomes. Bush completed the Chargers scoring in the first half with a 45-yard touchdown run. Anderson managed to score a touchdown on the last play of the half.

In the second half, The Chargers started just like the first half and Persing scored on a 40-yard touchdown run. Then, in the 4th quarter, Bush threw the ball to Persing who went 50 yards for the touchdown. Anderson managed to score one more touchdown in the game.

Other notable standouts: first-time running back Tyler Robinson who ran the ball three times for seven yards. Anthony Sendejo and Payton “the Pitbull” Charlesworth ran the ball for the first time in a game. On defense Cage Hubbard, Kaleb Hammond and Jazzmen Wilson stepped up and made some great tackles. Delbert Henson punted the ball twice for an average of about 25 yards. The Chargers JPW’s record is now 2-0-0 in league and 3-1-1 overall.

Pee Wees

The Pee Wees only seemed like they were starting off shaky, with an early TD by the Anderson Jr. Cubs on the 7th play of the game. Then, with a crash heard throughout Yreka, Evan Shinar blocked an Anderson punt. And just like that, we had a football game.

In the first half of this intense back and forth battle, Parker Sanders and Patrick Bigelow pounded through the Anderson defensive line, gaining yard after yard. QB Ryan Bridenstine stepped it up with a successful pass to Sanders; although not enough for the first down. Dominic Villagomes, who seemed to be wearing lead cleats, punted the ball deep into Anderson territory. Then, in the right place at the right time, Lane Clark regained possession with a stellar interception. A few plays later, with a punt being forced, Payton Dickinson caused a fumble and Sanders recovered the ball. Bridenstine threw another great pass, this time to Clark. Villagomes then punted the ball close to the end zone and when the Jr. Cubs fumbled the ball, it allowed Caden Corbin his first fumble recovery; giving the Chargers possession at the 5-yard-line. Chase McDonald snuck in for the score. The score at halftime was tied 6-6.

In the powerful second half, Blake Batchelor, Tyler Hedin, Juan Cota, Villagomes and Bigelow tore up the field on defense. Although Anderson was allowed a touchdown, Roman Vulyak showed strength and denied the extra point. Josh Hansen kept the momentum going with several nice runs. Then, out of nowhere, McDonald exploded with an excellent 30-yard run; making room for a powerful Bigelow TD. On special teams, Trenton Riggins stopped the Anderson return with a thundering tackle. The iron-fisted Pee Wee defense again powered up and, with the help of Hansen now on defense, took down the squirrely Anderson running back in the backfield. With the crowd in awe, Cota thundered through the Anderson line with a jaw-dropping quarterback sack. Bridenstine, again showing his QB skills, threw yet another complete pass into the capable hands of Dickinson. Cota and Villagomes ended the regulation play with an awesome joint sack, stopping the intended pass and sending the game into overtime with the score tied 13-13. Per NorCal Fed rules, no league game can end with a tie.

With both teams fired up, the Chargers got the ball first with four attempts on offense from the 10 yard line. In Yreka’s fourth attempt and a completed pass to Dickinson , the ball fell just short of the goal. Anderson then took over and made it in for the win on their fourth and final attempt, ending the score at 19-13. What a fantastic game for those in attendance.

Other Charger Pee Wee notables: Charles Lopez, Tyler O’Gorman and David Ruiz assisted with outstanding tackles. Jan Henson had two great kicking attempts on kickoff. Tyler Wagy controlled the snaps and the offensive line held fast all day with great blocking from Henson, Dylan Quigley, Melkay Cisneros, Steven Evangelisti, Bryce McWilliams, Gabe Rodriguez, Nick Shafer and Brandon Young.

Jr Midgets

The Yreka Chargers Jr Midget game against the Anderson Jr. Cubs this past Saturday, was full of excitement as both teams scored two touchdowns in the first few minutes of the game.

Tyler Hockaday, Drew Robles and Tyler Currie all scored rushing TDs and the quarterbacks on the day completed 6/7 passes for 76 yards, including a 29-yard reception to Thomas “the Animal” Colla, which set up a touchdown run by Tristen Fonseca making it 25-13 at the half, in favor of the home team.

The second half was dominated by the Chargers defense as Stevie Albers, Aaron Durney, Currie, Tyler Frost, Zach Woodruff, Colla, Dustin Yates, Colton Dickinson, Braden Whitehouse, Eric Fernandes, Max Simon, Ayden Stryker and Scott Robinson stopped the Jr. Cubs offense. The defense recorded 38 tackles, three sacks, one forced fumble and one interception. “Fast” Eddie Robles led the defense with 7 tackles.

The offensive line led by Tyler Smith, Aaron Freeze, Jovani Cabrera-Guevara, Andrew Daugherty, Woodruff, Zane Allen and Dylan O’Gorman, handled the Jr. Cub defense as they piled up 280 yards of total offense along with five touchdowns. Hockaday led all runners with 11 carries for 150 yards and 2 touchdowns. Anderson added a last second touchdown which left the score 33-19 in favor of the Yreka Chargers.

Yreka is now 1-1 in league, and face the cross-town rival South Siskiyou Knights next Saturday at Mt. Shasta HS for the annual Jr. Midget Grudge match. Come out and see who gets to keep the enormous Grudge Match Trophy and bragging rights for the next year!

Midgets

The Yreka Charger Midgets hosted the Anderson Jr. Cubs and sent the cubbies home with a 38-6 thumping. Anderson opened the scoring for a quick 6-0 lead. Charger Michael Schuler answered right back, returning the kickoff 93 yards to pay dirt. Yreka’s defense then stepped it up as Anderson was stymied all day. A well executed rollout pass from Kaden Culp to Andrew “the Rooster” Andreas for six, rounded out the first half scoring.

Yreka came out fired up and scored on its first 2 possessions to put the Jr. Cubs away. Schuler capped both drives with TD runs. Blocking up front by Zach Hazelton, Tito Paredes, Mitchell Bruch and Jacob Dunlap helped the Chargers to victory. Dunlap bounced back from a bone crushing hit to show his toughness. Andreas convincingly converted 4 of 5 PAT tries, with excellent long snaps from Will Pipkin.

It was Yreka’s defense that showed their muscle all day. Quaid Blanchard and John Crane each had interceptions. Nick Hanna proved to be a force on the defensive line and Thomas “Bigs” Bigelow played very well also. The highlight of the defensive effort was capped by Gabe “the Bullet” Durney. Durney picked off an Anderson option attempt and returned it for a touchdown. Yreka moves to 2-0 in league and travels to Mt. Shasta to take on the South Siskiyou Knights this Saturday.

Come out on Saturday to Mt Shasta High School Stadium and watch our cross town youth football and cheer rivalry between the Yreka Chargers and South Siskiyou Knights. Games times at 8:45, 10:00, 12:00, 2:00 and 4:00 pm. It’s Siskiyou Youth at its finest!

While there were no extraordinary plays to mention, the Yreka Charger Mighty Mites held their own against their fierce competitors.

Makayla ten Berge had a few good tackles and gained her team positive yardage when running the ball. Offensively, the Yreka Charger Mighty Mites struggled from one quarter to the next. Defensively, the Yreka Charger Mighty Mites put everything they had on the field giving the Orland team something to fight for. The Charger defensive line of Skylar Conrad, Wesley Ward, Randall Hughes, Jai Case, Jake Peterson, Travis Hedin, Antonio Fernandez, Brayden Mauch and Travis Arwood were in full force.

Jr. Pee Wees

Last Saturday, the Yreka Charger Jr. Pee Wees went to Orland and took on the Aztecs. Charger Jr. Pee Wees started off slow and allowed the Aztecs to score first. Then, as in games past, the Yreka Chargers stepped up and kept the Aztecs out of the endzone the rest of the game. This was due in large part to defensive end Dalton Lester making some great tackles in the backfield. Robert Giannini also had an interception and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown. The Charger defense, as a team, stuffed the running game, making a statement.

On Offense, Jeremy Persing had a 60-yard touchdown run which was made possible by a huge hole created by offensive linemen Jared Weiser, Anthony Sendejo and Payton Charlesworth. Persing also added a 7-yard touchdown run. Tyraye Bush continued his great running and scored on a 50-yard touchdown run. This was our first league game and we started off the right way, with a win. Our regular season record is 1-0.

Pee Wee

In a losing effort, the Yreka Charger Pee Wees struggled against the Orland Aztecs at Trojan Stadium in Orland last Saturday. With the Chargers not performing at their best, the Aztecs got off to a better start and took an early lead.

In the first and second quarters, the Charger linebackers used solid tackling, the defensive backs stood strong, and the entire defense tried hard to contain the speedy Aztec offense, to no avail. On offense, the Pee Wees struggled against the weight of the Orland defense and were not able to move the ball much. Yreka had some good moves on both sides of the ball, going close on numerous occasions, but with no points to show. The half ended at 13-0.

The second half was much the same and with the Chargers still playing well below par, the Aztecs held firm and came up with the win.
Charger Highlights from Saturday: Spearheading the defense was workhorse Evan Shinar who was all over the field and, it seemed, in many places at once. In a great joint effort, Juan Cota forced the fumble with a defensive strip allowing a speedy recovery by Christian Martinez. The defensive stops also included excellent tackles by Blake Batchelor, Tyler O’Gorman and Charles Lopez. Lane Clark and Chase McDonald each had multiple tackles. The indestructible Connor Lawe had a stinging solo tackle, stalling the score for the Aztecs. Steamroller David Ruiz had a crushing tackle that would have made any mom proud.

On offense, Patrick Bigelow showed mind over matter, pushing forward and refusing to let the pace of the game stop his determination. Parker Sanders, while still an offensive standout, was gridlocked by the Aztec defense all day. Josh Hansen, McDonald and Batchelor all had great pass receptions.
Final Score: 25-0, Aztecs

Jr. Midgets

The Charger Jr Midgets offense put up good numbers in the first half, scoring two touchdowns on long runs by the running backs. The Chargers led most of the game with a half time score of 14-13.

With numerous Charger game injuries and searing heat in the second half, the Orland Aztec’s put together a long drive late in the third quarter resulting in the game winning touchdown.

The Charger Jr. Midget team played well but lost with a final score of 21-14. Charger Jr Midgets record is now 0-1 in league and they look forward to this week’s home game against Anderson Jr. Cubs.

Midgets
The Yreka Chargers Midgets traveled to Orland to open league play and came away with a 22-14 victory. Kaden Culp scored first for Yreka after a nice completed pass from Culp to Gabe Durney brought the Chargers close. Orland answered right back, returning the kick off for a score.

Both teams battled back and forth to round out the first half. Yreka’s O-line consisting of Ron Watson, Reno Pitts, Aaron Jacobsen, Jimmy Hausauer and Will Pipkin then took over and led the chargers on a long drive. Casey “the Goose” Gusaas and Jacob Maphet both proved to be workhorses in the charger backfield. Michael Schuler finished the drive with a nice run. Andrew Andreas converted his second PAT for a 16-6 charger lead.

The Chargers then stepped it up defensively, limiting the Aztecs to one lone pass for a score. Goose and Maphet led the way with several hard hits. Michael Lawe played a solid corner and Brett “the B Man” Todd, Kyle “Noodles” Ramociotti filled in nicely. P.J. Lewis was flying around all day long along with Isaac “the Warrior” McCloud.

The Yreka Chargers Midgets secured the victory with a well executed time consuming drive using nearly eight minutes the fourth quarter. According to Head Coach Todd Hedin, the Chargers pulled together as a unit, utilizing discipline and minimizing penalties for their first win.

Come out and watch the Yreka Chargers take on the Anderson Jr. Cubs in a home game at Miner Stadium. Games start Saturday at 8:45 am and go all day until approximately 6 pm. Food and Merchandise will be available.

Offensively Antonio Fernandez had a great game doing his job to block and protect the ball. Travis Hedin and Titus Christy both had some good tackles, while Jai Case provided his team with a few assisted tackles. The highlight of the game was when running back Jake Peterson, lost one of his shoes. Peterson had his shoe tackled off but never slowed down while he proceeded to run for a 20 yard-plus touchdown with one cleat and his white sock.

Junior Pee Wees

This week the Yreka Chargers Junior Pee Wees played West Valley in a hard fought football game and won. The Junior Pee Wees started off the game with a 50-yard touchdown run by Quarterback Tyraye Bush in the first offensive series. Tyraye Bush also added two other touchdown runs in the game, giving him three total. This was all made possible by the entire offense doing a great job of blocking. It started in the middle with the offensive line of Delbert Hensen, Jarred Weiser, Anthony Sendejo, Dylan Frick, Payton Charlesworth and Cage Hubbard. Along with our offensive line our position players made great blocks and routes starting with tight end Dalton Lester and wide receivers Cale Cool, Devin Gomes, Jazzmen Wilson and Lucas West. At running back Jeremy Persing and Robert Giannini gained several yards running up the middle. Jeremy Persing had one run of about 15 yards were he broke about five tackles to stay on his feet and fight for the hard yards.

On defense the JPWs fought the entire game and only allowed two touchdowns. One of West Valley’s touchdowns was set up by a 70-yard run that got them to the 5-yard-line. Tyraye Bush chased the West Valley runner down and stopped the touchdown, but they eventually pushed in for the touchdown two plays later. During the game our defensive line of Lorenzo Martinez, Devin Gomes, Delbert Hensen, Bowen Christy, Jarred Weiser, Dalton Lester, Robert Giannini and Cage Hubbard kept pressure on the quarterback and helped stop the inside running game. Our linebackers of Cale Cool, Jeremy Persing and Payton Charlesworth helped stuff the middle running game and pursued all outside running plays. Our defensive backs of Tyler Robinson, Izaiah Martinez, Brandon Wessel, Kaleb Hammond, Anthony Sendejo and Tyraye Bush stopped almost all the outside runs.

The JPWs ended the none-league games with a record of 1-1-1 and are ready for the league games to start next week against Orland.

Pee Wee

This past Saturday saw the Yreka Charger Pee Wees take on the Division-1 power house West Valley Jr. Eagles. On the opening kick off, West Valley scampered for the only score of the game. From that point on, it was all defense, all the time. West Valley’s offense never got past the Chargers 45-yard-line. Safety Christian Martinez and Outside Linebackers Parker Sanders and Blake Batcherlor had sideline smashing hits, while Middle Linebacker Virisur Lantz and the defensive line of Evan Shinar, Dominic Villagomes, Tyler Hedin, Patrick Bigelow and Juan Cota denied the Jr. Eagles any positive yardage. Newcomers David Ruiz and Gabriel Hughes along with Yreka Chargers Veterans, Tyler “Tybo” O’Gorman, Conner “the Smurf” Lawe, Charles Lopez, Roman Vulyak and Hayz Lantz laid some very devastating hits to provide support for the starters. Offensive standouts were Brian “The Wall” Gutierrez, Raymand Deas, Tyler Wagy, Brandon Young and backup quarterback Lane Clark. The Pee Wees open up the regular season at the Orland Aztecs. Our next home game will be in two weeks. We hope to see everyone then.

Junior Midgets
No report.

Midgets

The Yreka Chargers Midgets lost another tough one to the West Valley Jr. Eagles. Turnovers and miscues again spelled defeat for the Charger Midgets. The West Valley Jr. Eagles scored on three of their first four possessions to take command. Everyone on the Yreka side saw plenty of action in their final preparation for league play. Tevin Cadola, Tristan Howard and Quaid Blanchard shined for Yreka said coach Todd Hedin. Yreka travels to Orland next Saturday.

At the beginning of the first quarter, the Jr. Cougars had the ball and for a moment it looked as if they were off to a good start. But the Yreka Chargers defense stepped it up and held the Cougars at the goal line, never letting them break through. Jake Peterson, Skylar Conrad, Travis Arwood, Travis Hedin, Titus Christy, Davon Ruiz, Wesley Ward, Randall Hughes and Devon Applewhite all made great defensive plays throughout the Mighty Mite game.

Quarterback, Earl Croy Jr. completed two passes against the Foothill Jr. Cougars. One of the completed passes went right in to the hands of running back Jake Peterson, who took the pass all the way for a touchdown. The second pass was successfully received by Devon Applewhite, who made positive yardage up the football field. The Charger Mighty Mites plan to be in full force next weekend and appreciate all the fans that come to cheer them on.

Junior Pee Wees

The Charger Junior Pee Wee played a tough fought battle on Saturday against the Foothill Jr. Cougars. Foothill came out strong and scored a couple of touchdowns in the first quarter. The Junior Pee Wee defense then stepped up and kept Foothill scoreless for the rest of the game.

The Charger Junior Pee Wees answered back with two touchdown runs by Quarterback Tyraye Bush. Bush scored both his touchdown runs by fake runs up the middle. But Bush could not score with out the great offensive line blocking of Robert Giannini, Payton Charlesworth, Anthony Sendejo and Delbert Hensen. Our receiving crew of Devin Gomes, Cale Cool, Tyler Robinson, Lucas West, Jazzmen Wilson and Izaiah Martinez also contributed by getting key blocks, springing Bush to the outside. On the defensive side of the ball, the Junior Pee Wees had a hard hitting crew of Dalton Lester, Jeremy Persing and Tyraye Bush come up with some bone crushing hits against Foothill. Cale Cool and Robert Giannini also contributed with first down saving tackles. Tyler Robinson made a great open field tackle saving a possible touchdown.

All in all the Charger Junior Pee Wee’s are showing great improvement everyday and are getting ready for the regular season to start.

Pee Wees

The Yreka Charger Pee Wees had a hard time scoring against a stifling Jr. Cougar Defense this past Saturday. This game belonged to the Jr. Cougars and they knew it. With hard hitting tackles and a defense that just wouldn’t quit, the Jr. Cougars upset the Yreka Chargers Pee Wees, 20-0. Some of the bright spots for the Chargers on offense were two completed passes from quarterback Ryan Bridenstine to his receivers Trenton Riggins and Payton Dickinson. Another bright spot for the offense was Center Tyler Wagy. Wagy didn’t fumble a snap all day.

All around defensive threat, Dominic Villagomes, showed the power of the foot by booming several punts and kickoffs. One punt went for 30 yards in the air eventually landing the Jr. Cougars on their own 15 yard line. Defensive lineman Patrick Bigelow and middle linebacker Virusur Lantz landed several smashing tackles throughout the day and never let up. Bigelow even recovered a fumble in the backfield in the second quarter. Safety Christian Martinez, came three inches away from an interception before getting hit by a Jr. Cougar receiver to make sure that it never happened.

The Pee Wees hope to recover from this defeat and come back to play hard this Saturday at home against the West Valley Jr. Eagles. So please come out and support the Pee Wees.

Jr. Midgets

The Charger Jr Midget squad came out to play at last Saturday’s match up against the Division 1 power house Foothill Jr. Cougars. One of the many contributors was longtime Charger Tyler Hockaday who helped the offense with tough drives throughout the day.

On Offense, Stevie Albers caught a couple of key passes that helped forward the Charger advance. First year player Aaron Freeze had a surprise big gain on a fake punt that made a key first down which set the Chargers up for a Tyler Currie pass to Thomas Colla for a touchdown to tie the game 6-6. Jovani Cabrera-Guevara, Tyler Smith, Scotty Robinson, Freeze, Zach Woodruff, Joseph Betts, Cody Jensen and Andrew Daugherty opened big holes for D. Robles and Hockaday’s big runs. Robles also had several key runs plus a long touchdown run late in the fourth quarter that tied us once again.

Defensive highlights included hard tackles from Eddie Robles along with Curry, Colla and stud Derek Howard who eventually left the game with a crushed hand. Cougar efforts to pass the ball were frustrated by the likes of Braden Whitehouse who had a knocked down pass.

The full Charger defense made up of Dustin Yates, Aaron Durney, Anthony Garcia, Colton Dickinson , Tristen Fonseca, Eric Fernandes, Scottie Wallace, Wyatt Wood, Zane Allen, Max Simon, Jonathan Bridgewater, Ayden Stryker, Tyler Frost and Garet Rider played hard throughout the game to limit the Division One Cougars to just two touchdowns by the end of the game.

With five minutes left in the game, the Jr. Midgets had a good drive but were unable to capitalize and came up five yards short which ended the game in a 12-12 tie. The Charger Jr. Midgets have proven that their offense and defense can hang with Division 1 teams as they have a win last weekend against Red Bluff and tied this week with Foothill, two very tough Division 1 teams. The final pre-season game is this Saturday against the tough D-1 West Valley Jr. Eagles at Miner Stadium at 2:00 pm.

Midgets
The Yreka Charger Midgets played their first home game of the ‘09 season against the Foothill Jr. Cougars. Yreka held its own in the first half versus the much larger Jr. Cougars. The Chargers played a tough and physical game with Jacob Maphet scoring Yreka’s lone touchdown after a nice drive. The first half ended with foothill leading 8-6.

Foothill came out firing the second half and was able to connect on two deep passes to take control of the game, eventually winning 36-6. Kaden Culp had a nice interception, while Ronnie Watson and Casey Gusaas both provided some nice hits. Andrew Andreas had a good reception to keep the scoring drive alive. Josh Johnson returned from a bell-ringing hit to provide some nice tackles on defense. Yreka fell to 0-2 in non-league play and takes on the West Valley Jr. Eagles next Saturday in Yreka.
