The Yreka Chargers traveled to Palo Cedro this last Saturday to take on the Shasta Jr. Wolves. In a game played on hot turf at Foothill High School, the Chargers proved they were up to the challenge against the Division I Jr. Wolves.

The Yreka Chargers Midgets came out on fire and took the opening kickoff and drove 67 yards to the Shasta “6-inch line,” only to be turned away on downs. However, the long drive  set the tone for the game as the Charger offense was able to control the clock on time consuming drives.

The Yreka defense forced a punt and the Chargers continued to ground and pound with Tyler Hockaday finding the end zone on a 5-yard run. The 2-point conversion by Aaron Freeze split the uprights and Yreka found themselves with an 8-0 lead. Another defensive stop, led by middle linebacker P.J. Christy, Keith Belcher and Max Simon, provided the momentum needed for the Chargers to increase their lead. Yreka capped a 60-yard drive with a 27-yard scoring strike from Ty Currie to Stevie Albers.  The kick failed, and left the Chargers with a 14-0 lead at the half. (more…)

Saturday, September 11

On the 9th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on our nation, the Yreka Chargers played their first home game at the Miner stadium under a beautiful American flag, flown at half mast in remembrance of that day. Each game began with a moment of silence for our country’s fallen heroes, followed by the National Anthem. For the Charger’s Junior Midget’s, the game that day ended in a decisive victory of 37-12 over the Gridley Titans.

Offensively, the Chargers were unstoppable. The run attack produced 3 TDs by Drew Robles, Parker Sanders, and Dominic Villigomes. The pass attack produced a TD to Chase Mcdonald, and a spectacular 20-yard hook-up from Braden Whitehouse to Scotty Wallace.

All of the production was lead by the stout O-line of Juan Cota, Bryce McWilliams, Bradley Betts, Devin Wells, and Evan Shinar. They blazed holes and battled non-stop. Jan Hensen was perfect with his 3 for 3 PAT attempts, adding 6 more points with an impressive leg.

Wanting a piece of the action, the Chargers defense put up some points of their own with a Zach Hansen interception to the end-zone for the first ” pick 6″ of the season. Tyler Ewing showed his athleticism by snagging his own interception. Spearheading the
disruptive barrage against the Titan offense, Tyler Smith, Nathan Black, Joe Betts, and Wesley Hazleton were plugging gaps and making hits behind the line of scrimmage all day. Anything that did come through, or kicked outside, was met by Jesse Garcia and Melkey Cisneros, and punished.

nsa-in-story.jpgThe total domination of the Titans was a complete team effort by the Chargers. With one remaining pre-season game left, the Junior Midgets have a final opportunity to polish up against the Shasta Wolves on Saturday, September the18. The strong arsenal the Junior Midget division has displayed, both offensively and defensively, will be put to the test in this away game against an always tough Shasta program. (more…)

Mighty Mites

y-ad-1-click.jpgOn Saturday, October 24, the Charger Mighty Mites took on the Corning Lions. The Corning Lions were a tough competition for the Charger Mighty Mites both offensively and defensively. The Charger Mighty Mites put forth every effort while battling the Corning Lions. First quarter defense was strong but not strong enough for the Corning Lions; the charger Mighty Mites made the Corning Lions fight for every positive yard that they gained. Great tackles were made by Devon Applewhite, Davon Ruiz, Wesley Ward, Jake Peterson and Skylar Conrad. Makayla ten Berge had an outstanding tackle in the third quarter. Offensively Travis Arwood, Travis Hedin, Randal Hughes, Antonio Fernandez and the rest of the Charger offensive did a great job blocking and running the ball; the fumbles at the goal line however kept bringing the Mighty Mites back to the 40 yard line. Last weekend, the Charger Mighty Mites took on the Central Valley Jr. Falcons. It was a competition against equals, as they battled to a tie. The two Mighty Mite teams played aggressively on both sides of the ball, all the way to the end of the fourth quarter. The hard to take down Skylar “The Wreckn’ Ball” Conrad scored another touchdown for the season as did Jake “The Snake” Peterson. Defensively all the Charger Mighty Mites played at their best. Devon Applewhite made impressive tackles, as did Wesley Ward. Many fumbles were caused by the Charger defense making for a very exciting fourth quarter. We have one more game left against the Corning Lions this next Saturday at 8:45 am. (more…)

The Yreka Chargers Mighty Mite defense was at its optimum this past Saturday against the Willows Coyotes. The Coyotes barely had a chance to get off the fifty yard line against the Charger defensive line of Wesley Ward, Travis Arwood, Skylar Conrad, Antonio Fernandez and Randall (RV) Hughes. Devon Applewhite had an outstanding tackle in the backfield as did Wesley Ward and Hughes.

Skylar “The Wreckn’ Ball” Conrad ran for two touchdowns in the second quarter, right through the Coyote defense. Donovan Wilson also did a good job stepping in as center. Ward had a very exciting 15-yard run followed by an impressive 25-yard run by Jai Case. All of the positive yardage and touchdowns gained by the Yreka Chargers could not have been accomplished without the offensive efforts of Jake Peterson, Earl Croy Jr., Travis Hedin and Arwood. Arwood was an essential blocker by constantly driving the opponent down the field and opening up holes. (more…)

nsa-in-story.jpgNot only did the Yreka Chargers Mighty Mites have to face the South Siskiyou Knights this past Saturday, they also had to battle the cold temperatures and freezing winds. This was a scrimmage style game with half of the Chargers Mighty Mites taking turns filling positions for the South Siskiyou team. Jake Peterson, scored two touchdowns for the South Siskiyou team, while Davon Ruiz, ran his first ever touch down for the Yreka Chargers Mighty Mites. Next week, don’t miss the 8:45 am face off against Willows. If you haven’t seen these little guys play you are really missing out. (more…)

Mighty Mites

norcal.jpgIt was another exciting Saturday for the Yreka Chargers Mighty Mites. They were well prepared to battle the Anderson team. This week the Yreka Charger Mighty Mites showed how much they have developed into a cohesive team, as every Mighty Mite gave it their all, both offensively and defensively.

Quarterback Skylar Conrad had the most impressive play of the game. Breaking at least three tackles, Conrad managed to reach the end zone while dragging two Anderson Mighty Mites with him for the touchdown. That touchdown was by far the hardest earned touchdown of the season. If you haven’t made it to a Yreka Chargers Mighty Mite game this season, there are still two home games left! Come check us out! Mighty Mites

nsa-in-story.jpgThe Yreka Chargers Mighty Mites knew this last weekend’s game against Orland would be a big challenge, and a challenge it was. While there were no extraordinary plays to mention, the Yreka Charger Mighty Mites held their own against their fierce competitors.

Makayla ten Berge had a few good tackles and gained her team positive yardage when running the ball. Offensively, the Yreka Charger Mighty Mites struggled from one quarter to the next. Defensively, the Yreka Charger Mighty Mites put everything they had on the field giving the Orland team something to fight for. The Charger defensive line of Skylar Conrad, Wesley Ward, Randall Hughes, Jai Case, Jake Peterson, Travis Hedin, Antonio Fernandez, Brayden Mauch and Travis Arwood were in full force.  (more…)

Mighty Mites

yac-300-b.jpgThe Yreka Charger Mighty Mites had another great game; full of excitement both offensively and defensively. Offensively Antonio Fernandez had a great game doing his job to block and protect the ball. Travis Hedin and Titus Christy both had some good tackles, while Jai Case provided his team with a few assisted tackles. The highlight of the game was when running back Jake Peterson, lost one of his shoes. Peterson had his shoe tackled off but never slowed down while he proceeded to run for a 20 yard-plus touchdown with one cleat and his white sock. (more…)

Mighty Mites

nsa-in-story.jpgThe Charger Mighty Mites showed just how mighty they really are this weekend against the Foothill Jr. Cougars. At the beginning of the first quarter, the Jr. Cougars had the ball and for a moment it looked as if they were off to a good start. But the Yreka Chargers defense stepped it up and held the Cougars at the goal line, never letting them break through. Jake Peterson, Skylar Conrad, Travis Arwood, Travis Hedin, Titus Christy, Davon Ruiz, Wesley Ward, Randall Hughes and Devon Applewhite all made great defensive plays throughout the Mighty Mite game. This is the second year of football for the Yreka Chargers Mighty Mite team. Red Bluff was a tough competitor and gave the little Chargers some tough competition. The first half of the Mighty Mite game was a struggle for our Mighty Mites. But in the second half of the game, the Charger Mighty Mites stepped it up and held the Red Bluff Jr. Spartans from the goal line. Seth Lester had to step in as center and did a great job with his unexpected duties. A definite highlight of the game was when veteran Mighty Mite player Makayla ten Berge ran the ball for the first time ever and gained a good 20 yards for her team. The littlest players of the Yreka Chargers family are learning more and getting stronger as a team everyday. They look forward to next week’s home game and hope that everyone in North County will come see them play. (more…)
