MIDGETS
The Yreka Chargers Midgets lost a defensive battle to the Red Bluff Jr. Spartans this past Saturday by a score of 16-8. The Chargers scored first on a Tyler Hockaday 52-yard interception return. The extra PT by Aaron Freeze was good and Yreka seized the momentum.
The Yreka defense played solid in the first half, holding Red Bluff scoreless. The Charger charge was led by Tyler Frost, Stevie Albers and Corey Walker. Ty Currie had a nice interception for the YCM, stopping a RB drive. Josiah Travis had a nice kickoff pinning the Spartans deep.
The Charger Offense was unable to get on track all day, as the Spartans defense shut down the Yreka attack. Solid blocking by Ethan Frank and Philip Cogburn failed to spark the Charger Midgets.
Red Bluff scored once in the 3rd quarter, and again late in the 4th to seal the victory. The YCM played hard all day and all the boys played with courage and desire. (more…)

The Knights Unlimited team lost a heartbreaker Saturday to the Stingers from Klamath Falls, last years Klamath Pop Warner champions. The Knights scored on their first play from scrimmage and then followed with a couple of great defensive stops. After that the Stingers adjusted to the penetration of the line, and it was enough for the Stingers to take the lead and win 19-12.
The Knights Pee Wee team got back on the winning track with a decisive 27-7 victory over the Vikings from Klamath Falls. There was plenty of offense and defense, the Knights worked especially hard this last week in practice and it really showed. (more…)

JR. MIDGETS
On a hot, muggy Saturday in Corning, the much anticipated game with the Lions was played out in Cardinal Stadium. For the Yreka Chargers Junior Midget Division, this intense rivalry was fought out through regulation play, and one overtime period, and ended in a Chargers victory of 36-34. For 50 minutes, these teams slugged it out. It all came down to a last chance, must have 2 point PAT kick from Corning to re-tie the game. But with a Charger defensive line surge, and the hand of Chase McDonald to block the kick attempt, the stadium
erupted as the Chargers took the win. (more…)

The Yreka Chargers Midgets opened league play last Saturday with a convincing 33-6 win. The Chargers scored on their first play from scrimmage, with Tyler Hockaday rumbling for a 42-yard touchdown. The Central Valley Falcons fumbled on their first play and the Chargers capitalized with a 26 yard scoring strike from Ty Currie to Thomas Colla, to make the score 14-0 Chargers. Yreka wasted no time in finding the end zone for a 3rd time as birthday boy Anthony Garcia struck pay-dirt on a 5 yard carry. Hockaday scored early in the scored quarter to put the game away 26-0. Tristan Fonseca tacked on Yreka’s final tally before halftime to make it 33-0.
Austin Joling and Tyler Frost provided solid blocking from their offensive quad positions, while Ethan Frank proved to be a rock at center. Josiah Travis had an excellent game on both sides of the ball. Marquis Pitts ran the ball well and made several nice stops defensively. A blitzing P.J Christy nearly KO’d the CV fullback with a awesome hit. Last Saturday was an exciting day for Siskiyou Pop Warner, as both the Unlimited and PeeWee teams won on their home field at Weed High School.
The Unlimited team once again stepped up in the fourth quarter to earn their second victory. The first half featured a steady 6-minute opening drive for 6 points. There were also two kickoff returns for touchdowns. The Knights went into the half ahead by two, the difference being a two-point kick.
Play slowed in the third quarter, as it was a battle for yards with neither team scoring. In the fourth quarter, with two minutes on the clock and the Henley Hornets driving, the Knights defense coached by Mike Deflaco and Art Catrow, made the adjustments to the passing defense that resulted in two late fourth quarter interception touchdowns, which sealed the victory 32-18. The Yreka Chargers traveled to Palo Cedro this last Saturday to take on the Shasta Jr. Wolves. In a game played on hot turf at Foothill High School, the Chargers proved they were up to the challenge against the Division I Jr. Wolves.
The Yreka Chargers Midgets came out on fire and took the opening kickoff and drove 67 yards to the Shasta “6-inch line,” only to be turned away on downs. However, the long drive set the tone for the game as the Charger offense was able to control the clock on time consuming drives.
The Yreka defense forced a punt and the Chargers continued to ground and pound with Tyler Hockaday finding the end zone on a 5-yard run. The 2-point conversion by Aaron Freeze split the uprights and Yreka found themselves with an 8-0 lead. Another defensive stop, led by middle linebacker P.J. Christy, Keith Belcher and Max Simon, provided the momentum needed for the Chargers to increase their lead. Yreka capped a 60-yard drive with a 27-yard scoring strike from Ty Currie to Stevie Albers. The kick failed, and left the Chargers with a 14-0 lead at the half. (more…)

Saturday, September 11
On the 9th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on our nation, the Yreka Chargers played their first home game at the Miner stadium under a beautiful American flag, flown at half mast in remembrance of that day. Each game began with a moment of silence for our country’s fallen heroes, followed by the National Anthem. For the Charger’s Junior Midget’s, the game that day ended in a decisive victory of 37-12 over the Gridley Titans.
Offensively, the Chargers were unstoppable. The run attack produced 3 TDs by Drew Robles, Parker Sanders, and Dominic Villigomes. The pass attack produced a TD to Chase Mcdonald, and a spectacular 20-yard hook-up from Braden Whitehouse to Scotty Wallace.
All of the production was lead by the stout O-line of Juan Cota, Bryce McWilliams, Bradley Betts, Devin Wells, and Evan Shinar. They blazed holes and battled non-stop. Jan Hensen was perfect with his 3 for 3 PAT attempts, adding 6 more points with an impressive leg.
Wanting a piece of the action, the Chargers defense put up some points of their own with a Zach Hansen interception to the end-zone for the first ” pick 6″ of the season. Tyler Ewing showed his athleticism by snagging his own interception. Spearheading the
disruptive barrage against the Titan offense, Tyler Smith, Nathan Black, Joe Betts, and Wesley Hazleton were plugging gaps and making hits behind the line of scrimmage all day. Anything that did come through, or kicked outside, was met by Jesse Garcia and Melkey Cisneros, and punished.
The total domination of the Titans was a complete team effort by the Chargers. With one remaining pre-season game left, the Junior Midgets have a final opportunity to polish up against the Shasta Wolves on Saturday, September the18. The strong arsenal the Junior Midget division has displayed, both offensively and defensively, will be put to the test in this away game against an always tough Shasta program. (more…)
