West Valley’s Kevin Merkel put the Eagles in front, 1-0, with a long shot at the 15-minute mark. The goal led to the first and last Eagle celebration of the match.

The Miners tied it up seven minutes later on a goal by Trevor Daugherty. Daugherty’s tally started a string of three goals in nine minutes. Julian Mendoza gave Yreka the lead, 2-1, with a goal off of a Daugherty free kick at 29 minutes. Cesar Orozco took a pass from Mendoza and chipped the ball past the Eagle keeper and a defender into the back of the net, giving Y-Town a 3-1 advantage at halftime.

In the second half, it took Yreka just 45 seconds to let West Valley know there would be no Eagle comeback. Alex Luckey swiped the ball in front of the Eagle net, and hammered it home, making the score 4-1. Yreka would add a bit of insurance at the 58-minute mark, when David Neill set up Mendoza for his second goal of the game, to make the final 5-1.

Noah Lawson notched the win in net, making 11 saves.

Yreka hosts Anderson (0-6, 0-8) on Tuesday, February 7. Yreka beat the Cubs in Anderson, 7-1.

The Miners came into the week ranked 6th in NSCIF D-II playoff points. The top six teams advance to the postseason.

Meanwhile, the Yreka offense rarely threatened the Eagles.

It was more of the same in the second half, with Yreka goalkeeper Rachel Luetke facing a barrage of West Valley shots, several at close range. West Valley was able to notch a second goal 68 minutes into the match.

Yreka (1-6, 1-10-1) came into the week ranked 6th in NSCIF Division-II playoff points, with the top six teams making playoffs.

Yreka continues Northern Athletic League play on Tuesday, when the Lady Miners host Anderson (2-4, 4-6-1).

A few months ago, a young man I know had lost his job, and was sort of feeling sorry for himself. Well, I’m not one to have a ton of sympathy. My view is, “Okay, the job’s gone. Go ahead and be bummed out for a couple of days, take a breather, and then go make something happen. Be proactive.”

It just so happened my brother who, like me, has a bit of entrepreneurial spirit was in town at the time. So, I took the young man over to my bro’s place and we had a little talk about people we knew who had started their own business on a shoe string, as in little or no money. You see, you don’t have to depend on other people to “give” you a job. With some hard work and a willingness to take a risk, you can make your own job.

At my brothers, we talked about a lot of different businesses, including a guy who has started his own business while still attending college at Chico State, Danny Orloff. Many in Siskiyou County may remember Orloff from his time playing basketball at Yreka High School. Well, a year and a half or so ago, Orloff kicked of his clothing business, Fight the Stereotype. What stereotype? Orloff explains.

“So, I first got the idea when I was at College of the Siskiyous. After going away to Stanislaus and coming back home I noticed that it is just habit for us to judge others by appearance. There are certain types of clothing that makes people seem different. We are very judgmental as humans and I think a part of that is today’s society and how we have adapted to stereotyping. It shouldn’t matter if somebody has their hat on backward or their pants up like Steve Erkel. Fight the Stereotype is about putting your judgments aside and seeing what is unique and different about each individual.”

The first order of 100 FTS T-Shirts were marketed primarily by word of mouth in the Chico area, and sold out in about two months or so. The second time around didn’t go quite as well, but Orloff stuck with it, and managed to get together enough capital to make a tank-top order of his custom design for the spring of 2011. That round of product flew out of his hands, selling as many 14 tank-tops in one day.

Orloff spent the summer back in Siskiyou County, working as a fire fighter, but when he returned to Chico, he had another order of FTS Threads ready to sell. Now, it was time for him to move to the next level of marketing.

“The first day back I picked up those shirts and marched my way down to the sickest clothing store in Chico, Trucker. I set up a meeting with the manager and he ended up liking my tank tops, took them, and had them on the shelf within a few days. They sold out within two weeks. I just started making more frequent orders and marketing more and more. I then found out that a close friend’s parents owned Cowells Surf Shop in Santa Cruz. I got in contact with them and before I knew it they had my crew neck sweaters on the shelf. Once I got into a second store things started to pick up,” said Orloff.

The next step for Orloff is taking a page out of the play book of the big time corporate clothing companies, releasing different lines for different seasons. He’s currently working on his 2012 spring line that will be released this March.

You can check out the FTS Threads website at www.ftsthreads.com

Oh, and if you think you couldn’t run your own business because it’s a lot of work, Orloff is doing so while taking six upper division college courses this semester.

BTW: the young man I mentioned in the opening paragraph found a way to earn a few bucks making and selling tamales to carry him through until he found work. He’s now working again.

To parents, coaches, and athletes,

You may notice that the photos are mainly of Yreka skiers and boarders. That’s because the photographer, Kris Prusko, was there specifically to shoot for Yreka. Through his generosity, SiskiyouYouth.com obtained the photos. When the Mt. Shasta Ski & Board Park was under previous ownership and advertised with the media I was involved with, I went personally to do the photos. For the past few years I’ve been reaching out to the PR and marketing person to work on promoting the Park on SiskiyouYouth.com. However, that person and/or ownership has decided to do very little local advertising, apparently assuming that the locals would just come anyway. Instead, they have spent their money out of town. I guess they’re dreaming of attracting huge crowds from elsewhere, while taking the locals for granted.

The difficulty for me in doing the photos and video personally is simple logistics and revenue. I live well over an hour from the Park, and it’s pretty tough to convince myself to spend the time and money to get there and then sit in the snow all day, without at least getting in a couple of runs. Under past ownership, we did a trade: advertising for a season pass. I always thought it worked out great. They got nearly free advertising, and I was able to do a bit of skiing (not really much because of my limited time, but at least some), and provide what I thought was really good coverage.

I’ve offered to do all kinds of cool things to help promote the Park, all to no avail. I still very much want to do so. The Mt. Shasta Ski & Board Park is very important to the local economy, and it just makes sense to help it succeed. Could it be that the Park simply doesn’t value the kids and families that have made SiskiyouYouth.com Siskiyou County’s top website for youth sports info and coverage? I would think that families would be the most desired group of people for the Park to reach.

Anyway, if the Mt. Shasta Ski Park is ever able to see the light, I can promise awesome ski & board race coverage, as well as doing everything I can to help promote the Park. If not, then I guess not.

Thanks,
Ray Wolf

However, Corning used a 7-0 run to grab the lead with about a minute and a half to play. It didn’t phase the Lady Miners.

Yreka’s Savanna Peters opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with a hoop, upping the Lady Miner advantage to 26-20. The Cardinals then went on a 7-0 run, including a 3-point play the hard way, to take a 27-26 lead with 1:37 left on the clock.

With 44 ticks to play , Taylor Brown hit what would prove to be the game winner, giving Yreka a 28-27 lead. A pair of freebies from Justine Cota, made it 30-27, with 13 seconds to go. Brown finished off the scoring with a free throw to make the final 31-27.

Brown led the Lady Miners with 9 points. Cota had 7 points and 9 boards. Breanna Ruelas had 5 swipes.

Some people said the Lady Miners had a monkey on their backs. But, with no Northern Athletic League wins in nearly three full years, it may have felt more like a giant gorilla. If so, the Lady Miners body slammed that gorilla on Wednesday night, with a 44-36 win over the Corning Lady Cardinals.

Yreka’s intensity was evident from the opening tip, as the Lady Miners scored the first eight points of the game. Ashley Ensminger drilled a 3-ball to open the scoring. Then Ensminger came up with a swipe and fed Dakota Cash, who converted to make it 5-0. Katie Brummett connected from beyond the arc to up the lead to 8-0.

Corning scored the next five point to make it an 8-5 game. However, the Lady Miners pushed their lead back to eight points, 15-7, at the end of the first quarter, when Erica Phillips dropped a dime to Allison Charleboix who scored.

While Yreka seemed to be in control at the end of the first frame, it was the Cardinals that would rule the roost in the second quarter, as they outscored Yreka, 18-8, to take a 25-23 lead into the locker room.

Yreka came back to the floor to start the third quarter with a renewed defensive focus, and allowed Corning just one field goal and a freebie in the entire quarter. Meanwhile, Cash put up five of Yreka’s eight points in the period. Phillips added a hoop, and Mackenzie Allen dropped in a free throw, giving Yreka a 31-28 lead going into the final frame.

The Cardinals scored the first four points of the fourth quarter, briefly regaining the lead 32-31, with 6:09 to play.

The Lady Miners responded with a 9-0 run. Ensminger put Yreka back in front with a mid-range jumper, 33-32. Phillips scored, 35-32. Ensminger again, 37-32. Then, Brummett beat the shot clock, to extend the Yreka advantage to seven points, 39-32, with 2:40 on the game clock. One from the charity stripe by Ensminger, made it 40-32, with 1:50 to play.

The Cardinals added a freebie, but Brummett did them one better, with a pair from the charity stripe with 53.9 seconds to go, 42-33. Corning put up three points the hard way, making it a two possession game, 42-36, with 44 ticks on the clock. The drama ended there, however, as Brummett notched two more free throws in the final seconds to clinch the 44-36 win.

How’d the Lady Miners (1-3, 10-12) break their NAL losing streak?

“Hey, we improved. We worked hard and we improved. We played with the intensity we need to play with,” said Yreka Coach Ken Dysert. “Simple as that.”

Ensminger led all scorers with 14 points. Brummett put up 12 points. Cash had 7, and Phillips contributed 6.

Kudos to the officials. Now, that’s how you officiate a varsity basketball game. Really, all three levels; varsity, JV, and frosh were well officiated. True, they were 3-man crews. But it wasn’t how many, it was how well done.
