Yreka

How does a player make an impact? If you’re Manny Barragan you rush for 1322 yards. That was the highest total in the Northern Athletic League, and ninth highest in the North Section. And, if you were Barragan you’d be first on the Yreka Miners football team in TDs scored (13), and third in the NAL.

Just for good measure, you’d also average 41.26 yards when you punted, and 29.09 yards when you returned a punt, as well as 22.36 yards on kickoff returns. Combine rushing yards, return yards, and receiving yards, and you’d be just shy of 2000 total yards.

And finally, if you were Barragan, you’d also be the place kicker, and you’d be second on the team in tackles.

Barragan’s performance this season has earned him an Impact Player Award. Congratulations

The Impact Player Award is given on a monthly basis and goes to Siskiyou County high school athletes, male or female, that have had a significant impact on the success of their team. I select the players based on my own observations, often in consultation with the player’s coaches.

bowen-ad-rev.jpgA total of four awards are given each month and are not school specific; they can go to a player at any school that Siskiyou Youth covers. Winners receive Impact T-shirts that were designed by Golden Grotto. The T-shirts and award are cosponsored by Siskiyou Youth and NorCal Classic Hits radio 102.3/101.7.

There are three more awards to given out this month….

yreka-v-west-valley-football-20-front.jpgYREKA – With playoff hopes slim, and facing the always tough West Valley Eagles (8-2), it would have been easy for the Yreka Miners to mail in the last game of the season. They didn’t. Yreka played a much more competitive game than the score indicates, and played to the end.

The Eagles came out with an aerial attack. On the first possession of the game, the Eagles connected on a 29-yard pass to move to the Yreka 30. The next pass found a receiver, but it was Miner Brandon Larreau with an interception. Yreka was unable to move the ball and punted.

Undaunted by the pick off, West Valley went right back to the air, connecting on a 50-yard strike to move from mittan-ad-300.jpgits 20 to the Miner 30. The Eagles capped the 80-yard drive with a 4-yard run. With the PAT it was 7-0 halfway through the first quarter.

The Miners were forced to punt again on their next possession, but a bad snap led to the Eagles taking possession at the Yreka 27. This time the Eagles finished the short drive with an 8-yard pass, making it 14-0 with 1:45 left in the quarter.

Following a touchback on the ensuing kickoff, the Miners, facing a potential blowout, set up shop on their own 20-yard-line. By the end of the quarter, Yreka had moved to its 45. On the first play of the second quarter, Manny Barragan flew past the Eagles for a 55-yard TD. Barragan also scored a 2-point conversion on a fake kick, making it 14-8. (more…)

clarity-300.jpgThe North Section CIF released updated volleyball playoff points rankings today.

Dunsmuir (11-8) is tied for 7th with Butte Valley (8-5) in Division-VI, and is in position to host a first-round playoff game. However, Big Valley (10-13-3) ranked 11th has won at least a share of the Evergreen league and has defeated Dunsmuir twice in league play. Big Valley will likely jump over Dunsmuir in the playoff seedings. Happy Camp is ranked 15th (2-9), and Tulelake is 19th (3-21) (more…)

brie-sized.JPGYreka High School senior Brie Phillips has joined SiskiyouYouth.com as a sports journalist for her senior project.

Phillips has thus far spent time observing on the sidelines of the Yreka v Lassen football game, and has taken action photos at the Yreka v West Valley volleyball match. Her first slide show is part of SiskiyouYouth.com’s coverage of the match.

While she isn’t completely sure of her career plans, Phillips says that it will have mittan-ad-300.jpgsomething to do with health and an active lifestyle. She may attend the College of the Siskiyous, but is still investigating other schools.

Phillips must complete 20 hours of training and practical application to fulfill the requirements of her senior project. She will be covering all aspects of the Yreka Miner’s baseball tournament in the spring as her capstone for the project—including writing the story, conducting interviews, taking and editing photos, producing the slide show, and posting the story and slide show to the website.

yreka-v-west-valley-volleyball-7-front.jpgYREKA – West Valley (9-0, 32-8) simply doesn’t lose in Northern Athletic League play. And although the young Yreka Lady Miners varsity team didn’t defeat the powerful Eagles, they did make them sweat in the first two very competitive games of the match.

Perhaps it was senior night that inspired the Lady Miners, or maybe it was the idea that it was their last home game of the season. Whatever the reason, Yreka (1-8, 3-17-1) played one of its best matches of the season.

northerncapaving-300.jpgYreka jumped out to a 5-1 lead in game-one, behind a pair of thundering kills by senior Carrie Watson. The Eagles narrowed it to 7-6, but a kill and an ace by Mallory Greenfield pushed the lead back to three points at 9-6. Yreka extended its lead to seven points, 16-9, on a pair of aces by Jessany Munoz. The Eagles, however, battled back to tie the game at 19-19. A kill by Kayla Wisler temporarily regained the lead for Yreka at 20-19. But, West Valley scored the next six points to take the game 25-20. (more…)

yreka-sendejo.jpgCORNING – The Northern Athletic League girls individual tennis championships were held last Friday and Saturday, and Yreka got a surprise performance from their number-6 player, Selena Sendejo.

Sendejo pulled an opening round upset of Anderson’s top player, Yui Gabrielle 9-8. She then took down Anderson’s number-4 in the second round (6-4, 6-1).

Sendejo lost to Corning’s top player, Sonya Scott, in the quarter finals  (2-6, 0-6), and finished the tournament with a loss to Corning’s number-4, Magali Hernandez in three sets (2-6, 6-4, 3-6).

Sendejo drew praise from coaches at the tournament, one

calling her the “Wild card of the championships.” Her own coach, Steve Pyles called her the, “Last Miner Standing.”

In doubles, the duo of Jessica Shuler and Kendall Taylor won their first round match against Anderson’s number-2 pair, Jennifer Haney and Melissa Chipley, 8-2. Shuler and Kendall were knocked out in the second round by Corning’s number-3 team of Baillie Eller and Samantha Monroe (3-6, 2-6).
