Jr. Midgets
The Yreka Chargers Jr Midget team traveled to Colusa for their first round playoff game against the Winters Jr Warriors. The fans that traveled were not disappointed as the Chargers dominated the number two seeded Warriors from the South with a win 46-21.
The offense started quickly as they moved down the field on a series of plays that ended with a seven yard touchdown run by Drew Robles. The next two drives, lead by the strong arm of Tyler Currie, ended on a 19-yard touchdown pass to Stevie Albers, and a twenty yard touchdown pass to Eddie Robles.
The game was also full of exciting returns. D. Robles returned a 78-yard punt for a touchdown. Workhorse Tyler Hockaday had a 53-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, and Braden Whitehouse contributed a 3-yard touchdown run.
The Chargers racked up 203 total rushing yards: 51 passing yards and 181 punt/kick off return yards on the day. The Chargers kicker, E. Robles, went 5 for 6 extra points on the day. The Chargers O-line (Tyler Smith, Zach Woodruff, Zane Allen, Jonathan Bridgewater, Jovani Cabrera-Guevara, Aaron Freeze, Andrew Daugherty, Aden Stryker and Scott Robinson) played a huge role in Saturday’s game with key blocks.
The defense held tough against a determined Warriors offense. Tristen Foseca, Derek Howard, Eric Fernandes, Thomas Colla, Aaron Durney, Max Simon, Garrett Ryder, Colten Dickinson, Joseph Betts, Cody Jensen, and Wyatt Wood limited the Warriors to only two offensive touchdowns. Anthony Garcia led the defensive backs with 3 deflected passes and an interception. The Chargers had 50 team tackles, five deflected passes, one fumble recovery and one interception on the day. Hockaday and E.Robles led the team with 8 solo tackles a piece.
The Chargers will move to the second round of the playoffs as they face the Corning Lions for the second time this season in Central Valley on Saturday at 2:00 pm. The game was a tough battle in the first meeting. The winner of the game will advance to the NorCal Fed Divison II Championship the following weekend.
Midgets
The Yreka Chargers went to Yuba City this last weekend to a playoff game against the Honkers. The Charger Midgets really showed their skills and strength against the Yuba City Honker’s.
The Charger’s took control for the first half dominating the field with a score of 14-12, in favor of Yreka.
The second half was a shear nail bitter. The Charger’s would score than the Honker’s would turn right around and score. The Charger Midget’s showed there strength as a tream on the field. This being the Charger Midgets last game of the season it proved to be a very exciting as well as emotional one with the final score being 32-28 Honker’s. The seasons over, no one wants it to be but it was one to be proud of. Good job boys.
Mighty Mites
The Yreka Charger Mighty Mites were invited to play an exhibition game against the Central Valley Falcons before the playoff games began. Every Charger Mighty Mite fought incredibly hard both offensively and defensively. Offensively, Skylar Conrad scored three touchdowns this game; all three touch downs were right up the middle breaking through the Falcons defensive line. Jake Peterson could not be stopped, as usual, and he too scored a touchdown. These touchdowns could not have been possible without the incredible blocking that the offensive line provided. Thanks to, Travis Hedin, Antonio Fernandez, Randall Hughes, Wesley Ward, Makayla ten Berge, Devon Applewhite and Travis Arwood for keeping their blocks.
The Falcon Mighty Mite team struggled against the Charger defense. Every Charger was on his/her toes; Skylar Conrad, Donovan Wilson, Jai Case and Travis Arwood all had tackles in the back field. Wesley Ward made a great fumble recovery taking the falcons back to the fifty yard line. Jai Case forced a ball carrier 30 yards backwards before taking him down. Davon Ruiz had several assisted tackles. But, his most memorable moment was when he did something no other Mighty Mite had done this year. Ruiz made the team’s first interception!
