ALAMEDA – The California Interscholastic Federation State Office has begun distributing a monthly electronic newsletter designed for parents of the more than 735,000 high school student-athletes in the state.

As a result of discussions during numerous Parents Advisory Committee meetings held throughout the state last year, one suggestion that was repeatedly brought forth was for the CIF to distribute relevant information for parents, directly to parents. The newsletter will keep parents informed of relevant issues including such topics as health and safety, eligibility and upcoming state championship events.

“The feedback we received from our parent groups was outstanding, especially regarding suggested ways to distribute information on health and safety, and sports medicine issues,” said CIF Executive Director Marie M. Ishida. “Parents repeatedly told us they realize the value and importance of this information and how it aids them in ensuring a positive athletic experience for their children. In today’s world, anything the CIF can do to provide information and preventative tips on such topics as heat illness, concussions and other health and safety concerns are tasks we must fulfill to assist parents and student athletes in being proactive and avoiding potentially dangerous situations.”

The initial newsletter was sent out in early August 2008 and will continue on a monthly basis through the school year.
