The Media Communications program at College of the Siskiyous is designed to prepare students for entry level employment in the Broadcast Television, Cable Television, and Independent Video industries. Television and video are a force uniquely important in today’s multi-media society. Media technology is evolving rapidly which opens up many opportunities for employment. This curriculum also academically prepares students for baccalaureate programs at four-year universities.
Only a few California Community Colleges offer an opportunity for a degree program in this growing field. The Media Communications major opens the door to many career opportunities in film, radio, television, and other broadcast media. Most of these careers require a certificate of achievement or an associate degree, some require a bachelor’s degree, and a few require a graduate-level degree. Possible career options include television producer, studio manager, studio technician, studio engineer, station manager, director, director of photography, director of engineering, casting director, sports director, TV/radio announcer, technical director, camera operator, grip, boom operator, film/video technician, editor, editing machine operator, continuity and script editor, special effects technician, production designer, scriptwriter, news writer, video/film lab technician, video recording engineer, director of advertising, director of research.
BRAND NEW – Digital Video Editing (COMM 41 / #7223 / 3 units) – This class will meet Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm in the Learning Resource Center, room 2 beginning August 17, 2010. This class would be of interest to students who are majoring in or pursuing a certificate in Communications as well as members of the community who are seeking to focus on computerized editing and post production. This course emphasizes the technical, theoretical, and creative aspects of computerized, digital editing and includes instruction in the operation of various industry standard computerized editing systems (Sony Vegas software, Vegas Movie Studio). No prior experience required.
Television Studio Production (COMM 4 / #7226 / 3 units) – This class will meet Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm in the Learning Resource Center, room 2 beginning August 17, 2010. This class is designed for students and community members as an introduction to the “on-campus” TV studio. Learn team production skills in the operation of equipment, hosting / talent opportunities, lighting, audio, 3camera editing, studio operations, and TV program planning.
Humanities and Film (HUM 5 / #7236 / 3 units) – This class will meet Thursday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. in McCloud Hall, room 4-112 beginning August 19, 2010. An introduction to the history of the motion picture from the silent era to the contemporary film. The course is designed primarily for the student who has had little previous contact with the history of motion pictures or historical film.
Another class of interest to media students is the brand new Arts and History of Ideas (HUM 2) class covering the study of great ideas in art music and culture which will be taught by Maria Fernandez.
