WEED – The Weed Cougars won their 11-man football game against the Tulelake Honkers without even playing. The Honkers were unable to field a viable 11-man team due to multiple players suffering from illness. The result was a forfeit win for the Weed Cougars. However, the squads did crack helmets in a 9-man game. Weed won the on-field contest 21-6. The 9-man game was unofficial, but you wouldn’t have known it by the play on the field.
Weed struck first on a 27-yard pass from Cody Beam to Robert West, who broke two tackles on his way to the end zone. The Cougars added the PAT and led 7-0 with
Tulelake responded four minutes into the second half, when quarterback Nick Staub connected with Jake Walden for a 21-yard score. The PAT failed, leaving Weed with a 7-6 lead.
With about three minutes left in the third quarter, the Cougars added to their lead on a 5-yard pass from Beam to Carlos Nava. Weed scored for the final time midway through the fourth quarter on a 14-yard run from Travis Andrews.
The Cougars are now 2-1 and host the Fall River Bulldogs (2-1) next Friday. The Bulldogs defeated Maxwell 24-12 in their last game. Tulelake falls to 1-2 and hosts Lakeview (0-2) next Friday. Lakeview lost its last game to Grant Union 35-14.
