YREKA – Thirteen students from Discovery High School and nine students from Yreka Adult School graduated Friday morning in a ceremony held at Discovery High School.

Discovery principal Marie Caldwell opened the ceremony by welcoming the crowd of family members, Discovery students, friends, staff members, administrators, and school board members. She then led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Graduating senior Ann Fuchser was the student speaker. After the well spoken Fuchser thanked the Discovery High School staff on behalf of the graduating students, she had a sobering reminder for all of those in attendance—particularly her classmates. Discovery students recently lost a good friend, Tyler Gregg, in a drunk-driving accident.

“Remember what Tyler’s mom, Cookie, told us. Don’t let Tyler’s death be in vain. Learn from his mistake. Don’t drink and drive. Don’t get into a car with a drunk driver,” Fuchser told the audience.

Gregg was a passenger in a van driven by a drunk driver, when he was killed.

Three scholarships were presented to Discovery students. Julia Bernier presented Andrea Carlson the Yreka Host Lions Scholarship. Earl Cox was the recipient of the Schullpelz Scholarship, presented by Jason Huffman. Flora Yeaman received the Peggy Kernohan-Favero Memorial Scholarship from Valerie Herman of the Soroptimist of Yreka.

After Superintendent Mark Greenfield presented and certified the Discovery High School Class of 2008, the school staff and Board of Trustees members handed out the diplomas.
