WEED – The College of the Siskiyous Eagles baseball team lost both ends of a double header, home opener to Feather River on Sunday afternoon. COS fell 6-2 in game-one, and 15-2 in game-two.
Feather River scored one run in the fourth, fifth, seventh and ninth innings of game-one, and put up a deuce in the sixth inning.
COS threatened to get on the board first in the bottom of the third inning of game-one. Jeff Reid led off the inning with a double. Reid moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Nolan Degner. However, the next two Eagle batters were retired on a strikeout and a ground out to deny COS a run.
Trailing 1-0, the Eagles had another good opportunity in the fourth inning. Adam Miller singled to lead off. Chris Houle walked, moving Miller to second base. Again, the Eagles failed to take advantage. The next two batters struck out, one fanning and one looking. Jeff Young walked to load the bases, but Reid flew out to right field to end the inning.
COS entered the bottom of the sixth inning behind 4-0. Miller doubled on a 3-2 count. Houle went yard on the second pitch of his at bat, drawing the Eagles within two runs of Feather River, 4-2. The next three COS batters went down in order.
The Eagles went three up, three down in the seventh and eight innings. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Young singled to give COS a glimmer of hope. Reid reached on a strikeout – passed ball, moving Young to second base. The next batter grounded out to third base, ending the contest, with Feather River winning 6-2.
Adam Miller went 3/4 for the Eagles, with a run, a double, and a steal. Chris Houle was 1/3 with a dinger, 2 RBI, and a walk. Jeff Young went 1/3 with a walk. Jeff Reid was 1/4 with a double.
Jeff Angrick (2-4) started and went 5 1/3, taking the loss for COS. He gave up 3 earned runs, 5 hits, and a walk, while fanning 4.
Game-two wasn’t pretty. The Eagles gave up five runs in the first inning and four in the second, to find themselves in a 9-0 hole.
The Eagles picked up their only two runs of the game in the bottom of the second inning. Houle was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Coty Clack reached on an error by the Feather River second baseman, moving Houle to second base. After an Eagle flew out to center field, Jeff Young doubled, scoring Houle, and moving Clack to third base. A balk by the Feather River pitcher brought Clack home and moved Young to third. That would be COS’ last run.
Feather River added two runs in the fourth inning and four in the seventh to win a seven inning game, 15-2.
Adam Miller went 2/3 for the Eagles. Jeff Young was 1/2, with a double and an RBI. Coty Clack scored a run and went 1/3. Houle scored a run and took a stroll.
Aaron Jorgensen (3-2) started for COS and took the loss, giving up 8 earned runs, 7 hits, and 3 walks in 1 2/3 innings.
