The Fall River Bulldogs boys team had all they could handle in the championship game of the Etna New year’s Tip Off tourney on Saturday,

The Etna Lions took a somewhat surprising 20-15 lead at the end of the first quarter, and hung tough with the undefeated Bulldogs (15-0) for the entire contest.

Fall River had the edge over the Lions at halftime 44-36, and 61-52 going into the final frame. The Bulldogs nipped Etna in the fourth quarter, 21-20, to secure the 82-72 win.

The Lions didn’t go quietly. With 6:35 to play in the game, a bucket by Josh Theofanides cut the deficit to four points, 61-57. Two freebies by Bulldog Zach Thompson made it 63-57. Etna answered at the other end with two from the line from Devonn Layton, 63-59.

Two more throws by Thompson were match by a Theofanides hoop, 65-61. The Bulldogs pushed their lead to 69-63. A Wyatt Black basket brought Etna back to within two possession, 69-65, with 3:53 to go. That, however, would be as close as the Lions would come the remainder of the contest.

Etna was whistled for 33 fouls in the game, and had five players foul out. Fall River lost two players, but not until late in the match. The Bulldogs had 28 fouls called on them.

Fall River was led by Thompson with 29 points. He was 14/18 at the free throw line. Jeffrey Kask scored 24, including a trio of treys. Tim Westlund added 10 points. The Bulldogs were 23/41 at the line. Thompson was named MVP, and Kask was selected All-Tourney.

Layton was high-point for the Lions with 22. Theofanides put up 20, and Wyatt Black scored 14. Etna was 10/34 at the charity stripe. Note: free throws matter. Black was chosen for All-Tourney.

Etna (6-6) will meet again on Tuesday in Fall River to kickoff Shasta Cascade League play.
