DUNSMUIR – In between flashes of brilliance, the Dunsmuir Lady Tiger volleyball team showed their youth on Thursday night, as they fell, 3-2, to the Redding Adventist Lady Lumberjacks.

In the first set, it was Tiger brilliance that showed. Katie McIntyre, the lone senior on the squad, pummeled the Lady Jacks with seven kills, taking advantage of sweet setting by sophomore Jessica Hatten.

The set was close early, but with Dunsmuir holding an 11-8 advantage, frosh Chelsea Helms rotated to server and ripped an ace, making the score 12-8. Five serves later, including another ace, it was Lady Tigers 17 – Lady Jacks 8. After Redding Adventist added a couple of points, McIntyre went to work, with four kills in the final eight Lady Tiger points, as Dunsmuir went on to win 25-12.

Set-two was also close most of the way, with the teams tied at 11-11. The Lady Jacks, however, outscored Dunsmuir 14-6 the rest of the way, for a 25-17 win to even the match.

Set-three looked like it would belong to Dunsmuir. The Lady Tigers built a 17-8 lead, behind strong play by Helms, who had three aces in the set at that point, and Clara Weld who had an ace and two kills. As turned out, it was the Lady Jacks that would finish strong in the set, with a 17-2 run to a 25-19 victory, and a 2-1 match lead.

The Lady Tigers rebounded in set-four,and showed that they are capable of playing under pressure. After jumping out to a 4-0 lead, the Tigers found themselves falling behind three times in the set. Dunsmuir trailed 18-16, when a Redding Adventist hitting error gave the Lady Tigers the serve and cut the deficit to 18-17.

Weld unloaded a wicked serve for an ace, tying the set 18-18. Weld continued to serve, and the Lady Tigers pushed their lead to 24-18. Only a great play by a Lady Jack prevented Weld from serving out the set. McIntyre took care of business with a kill for the, 25-19, victory.

Unfortunately for the Lady Tigers, their comeback bid to win their first match of the season ran out of steam. The Lady Jacks dominated the fifth and final set, scoring seven straight points to win the set 15-6, and the match 3-2.

Dunsmuir (0-2) is off until Tuesday, September 14, when they travel to Weed (1-1).

The Siskiyou Red Hots blanked Butte County 7-0 in the first game and defeated the Mendocino Yellow Jackets 14-13 in their second game. Through the course of the tournament each of Siskiyou’s athletes were able to put the ball in play, contributing to the Red Hots offense, a hefty feat for any team.

One of Siskiyou’s head coaches, Robert Girdner, praised the athletes dedication and fight commenting, “We were down 10-3 going into the 3rd inning against Mendocino when our bats finally came alive. Solid hitting and good base running resulted in our athletes scoring nine runs that inning.”

The Siskiyou Red Hots closed out the game with solid defensive plays, including a relay from center field to home, getting the tag to halt the Yellow Jackets late game rally.

The Siskiyou Red Hots received the silver medal in their division, with their 2-0 record, due to the tie break rules of runs scored against. Yuba-Sutter held their opponents to 8 runs in the course of two games and in the Red Hots hard fought battle against the Yellow Jackets, 13 runs were posted against the Red Hots landing them in second place.

Shasta Bears soccer team played a “friendly” against the Foothill Cougars on Tuesday in Palo Cedro, and came away with a hard fought 4-3 victory.

The Bears were first on the board in the 8th minute, with a break away goal by Austin Herrick. The Bears made it 2-0 in the 30th minute on a cross from Herrick to Andrew Campbell, who volleyed it in. The score stood 2-0 Bears at halftime.

The Bears have been able to hold their own in the first half against bigger schools in the past, but ultimately lost. This time it was different, eventually.

Despite the Bears adjusting to a more defensive alignment, Foothill came back. The Cougars scored in the 62nd minute, and the 69th minute to tie it up 2-2. Foothill took the lead, 3-2, in the 72nd minute.

It didn’t look good for the Bears, as the heat and tired legs were getting to them.

However, with only 3 minutes to go, Miller Sbarbaro scored on a break away, and then Campbell scored the winning goal in the 78th minute.

James Palmer had a strong game in the box with 15 keeper saves.

Assitant coach Marie Kennedy said, “Our defense also deserves kudos for hanging in there under a lot of pressure. Foothill had many opportunities but couldn’t finish.”

Tulelake took command of the match right from the opening of the first set. A kill by Madee Boyd put the Lady Honkers up 1-0. With the score 3-1 in favor of Tulelake, Greenbank rotated to server. By the time she was done, the Lady Honkers had rattled off eight service points, including six Greenbank aces. The score was 11-1.

Late in the first set, another Greenbank ace brought the Lady Honkers to the brink of victory, 24-11. Weed’s Osa Traylor put the celebration temporarily on ice with a block. However, Boyd nailed a kill shot to secure the set-one win, 25-12.

Tulelake led 2-1 on an ace and a kill by Gabby Rascon in the second set, when Geenbank took the serve. In a near replay of the first set, the Lady Honkers scored nine straight points with Greenbank behind the line. Michelle Rupert hammered a kill. Then, Greenbank accounted for seven of the next eight points, with a kill and six aces.

Down 24-11, Weed scored two in a row with Jeni Cheffey serving, including an ace. Rupert ended the second set with a block, giving Tulelake the 25-13 win.

It looked like the Lady Honkers were going to run away with the third set as well. The Lady Cougars, however, had other plans.

Down 21-14 and with Kaytlin Hartje serving, Weed made a 6-point run, including a kill by Kobi Mills and a pair of aces from Hartje, to close to within one point, 21-20. Kills by Cheffey and Mills tied the set, 23-23.

Tulelake responded with a kill by Rascon, and another set winning block from Rupert, 25-23.

Weed (0-1) travels to Butte Valley to take on the defending Evergreen league Champion Lady Bulldogs (0-0) on Thursday. Tulelake (1-0) plays next at University Prep (0-0) on Tuesday, September 9.

A much improved Weed junior varsity shut out the Tulelake JVs, 2-0. The first set went back and forth until Weed took control late to win 25-20. The Lady Cougars trailed 3-0 to start the second set, but controlled the set the rest of the way, winning 25-16.

It was a cool and cloudy day for the 11th annual Rachel Hanna Swim Olympics, but that did not deter the eager swimmers from coming out and having a fabulous day of fun. Over 100 parents and children attended the event and had a great day of swimming and competing in games such as Coin Wish Pond, Rubber Ducky Push and the Biggest Splash Contest.

The coveted Sportsmanship trophy was awarded to Maddie Meyer, daughter of Steve and Jennifer Meyer of Etna. Her name will be added to the plaque that remains in the lobby of Scott Valley Community Swimming Pool throughout the year. Several other participants were given Best Sportsmanship ribbons and ice cream certificates to Dotty’s in Etna. These winners are observed throughout the day by secret judges who select the children who exhibit good manners and kindness to others. These traits were some of Rachel Hanna’s most notable and this is how she is honored each year at the swim Olympics.

The Hanna Family would like to say thank you to everyone who attends and participates, and to Cliff’s Trophy in Yreka for donating the Sportsmanship trophy each year. As the Scott Valley Swimming pool officially closed the day before on August 20th, a special thank you to the pool staff and lifeguards for staying on one more day!
