Higher quality video at end of article (May be blocked in schools because it’s on Vimeo)

For the second straight season, the Yreka Miners fell to the Sutter Huskies in the NSCIF D-II championship game, held at Butte College. Last year, Sutter won 5-0. After a seven-run second inning in Saturday’s game, it looked like Yreka would capture the crown this time around.

However, Sutter chipped away at the lead, and narrowed it to 7-6 at the end of five innings. Yreka responded with four runs in the top of the sixth to extend its lead to 11-6. It looked good for the Miners, but not for long.

The Huskies scored nine runs in the home half of the inning to take a 15-11 lead. Yreka fought back with two runs in the seventh, but fell short 15-13.

The Miners came into the playoffs as the three-seed. They defeated six-seed Central Valley 12-2 in the first round, and shutout the two-seed Lassen Grizzlies 6-0 in a semi-final game. Sutter was the top seed, and beat number-eight Orland 10-1 and number-four Wheatland 3-1 to reach the title tilt.

Gabe Durney led off Yreka’s big second inning with a walk and stole second base. Cody Hoff reached on an error and Durney went to third. A single by Dustin Jochim brought home Durney and sent Hoff to third. Matt Jespersen bunted for a single, loading the bases. Tyler Johnson courtesy ran for Jespersen. Michael Elfgen plated Hoff and Jochim with a single, and Johnson went to second base. Johnson and Elfgen went for a double steal, and Johnson scored when the Husky catcher’s throw to third went into left field. Elfgen advanced to third on the error.

Sutter retired the next two Miner batters, but Michael Schuler got things rolling again when he took a walk. Christian Charles plated Elgen with a single, and moved Schuler to second base. Durney reached on a fielder’s choice, when Sutter unsuccessfully tried to tag out Schuler going to third on Durney’s ground ball. Charles went to second on the play. A walk to Cody Hoff forced Schuler across the plate. Jochim walked to push Charles home. The Huskies brought in a relief pitcher, who fanned the next Yreka batter to end the inning, but Yreka had a 7-0 lead.

Sutter got a lead off double from Matt Sanders in the bottom of the second inning. Sanders would score all the way from second on a wild pitch, making the score 7-1. Sutter added two more runs in the fourth inning via a hit batter, a walk, a wild pitch, and a pair of RBI ground outs, cutting Yreka’s advantage to 7-3.

Yreka retired the first two Husky batters in the bottom of the fifth inning. However, Sanders and Lucas Cryer then had back-to-back hits. Eight-hitter Brad Bonnenfant blasted a 3-run homer, making it 7-6 and chasing Miner starting pitcher Cody Hoff. Curt Bennett came on in relief for Yreka. The next Husky reached on an error, but Bennett ended the inning with a nice grab of a popped up bunt attempt.

Yreka seemed to regain control of the game in the top of the sixth inning, with four runs. Schuler took a one-out stroll, and stole second. With two gone, Durney walked. Hoff singled, scoring Schuler, and moving Durney to second base. Jochim tripled into the right-center gap, plating Durney and Hoff. Jochim scored on a single by Jespersen, making it 11-6.

Unfortunately for the Miners, the wheels totally fell off in the bottom of the sixth, as the Huskies scored nine runs on two errors, five walks, and three hits. Both errors came with one out, and what would have been no runs scored. Bennett started the inning, and Yreka used both Tevin Cadola and Elfgen in relief. When the final Husky batter of the inning flew out to left field, it was 15-11 for Sutter.

The Miners didn’t roll over, however, and came out fighting in the top of the seventh inning. With one out, Cade Parker singled. Schuler looked to be safe at first on a play that pulled the first baseman off the bag. The first baseman’s tag attempt appeared to miss Schuler by a significant margin. But, Schuler was ruled out, much to the dismay of Yreka fans. Parker went to second on the play. Charles hammered a 2-run bomb to make it 15-13. Durney reached on an error to keep hope alive for Yreka, but the next batter struck out to end the game.

Yreka finished the season at 18-14-2 and the D-II runner up. They were second in the Northern Athletic League at 8-4.

Sutter finishes as the D-II champions (29-3). The Huskies won the Butte View League at 12-0.

Hey Miners, thanks for another fun season. Most people had you guys buried when you dropped 2 of 3 to Central Valley in league. But, you proved the doubters wrong in the playoffs. Best of all, you guys went into Lassen as underdogs and shutout the Grizzlies in perhaps the worst place to play in the entire North Section. Nice job.

Sorry I didn’t get Charles big fly on video. Game ran long and I was saving the last few minutes of battery life for when the go ahead run came to the plate.

With former Mt. Shasta star Kayla Spini in the circle, the North two-seed Knights defeated the South one-seed Riverside Tigers 4-3.

The Tigers (42-5) were first on the board on a run largely manufactured by lead off hitter Natalie Barrios in the bottom of the first inning. Barrios walked, stole second, stole third, and scored on an error on her swipe of third base.

Shasta answered in the top of the third inning. With two outs, Racie Carrel singled and stole second base. Carrel found her way home on a single by Noelle Blake, tying the game 1-1.

Alexus Daniels reached on an error to lead off the bottom of the third for Riverside, and went to second on a wild pitch. Barrios walked. With one-out, Courtney Brown doubled in Daniels and Barrios, regaining the lead for the Tigers, 3-1.

Shasta took the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Number-nine hitter Andrea Davis	led off with a single. DJ Foster, former Weed HS standout, doubled to put Knights on second and third base. With one out, Carrel walked, loading the bases. There were two outs when Ally Wimer singled to center field. The ball was misplayed and Davis, Foster, and Carrel crossed the plate, putting the Knights on top 4-3.

The Knights threatened again in the sixth inning. Katie Eiler, former Etna HS star, singled with one gone, and then swiped second base. Eiler went to third on a ground out by Davis. Foster walked, and stole second. That, however, was as close as the Knights got to adding an insurance run, as the next batter struck out.

Riverside had runners in scoring position in the sixth and seventh innings, with the biggest threat coming in the seventh. With one out in the seventh, Brown singled, and went to second on a passed ball. Gina Grijalva walked with two outs. Christina Mohl singled to load the bases. The Knights got out of the jam when Austin Schmidt hit a line drive back to Spini for the final out.

Asked how it felt when she caught the game-ending liner, Spini said, “Relieved that I got out of that inning and no one scored.”

Carrel went 1/2 for the Knights with 2 runs, 2 walks and a steal. Eiler went 1/2 with a walk and a steal. Foster was 1/3 with a walk and a double. Wimer was 1/3 with 2 RBIs. Davis went 1/3 with a run. Blake was 1/4 with an RBI.

Spini went the distance (7 IP, 1 ER, 6 H, 6 BB, 3 K).

Shasta takes on the South two-seed Palomer at 3:00 pm on Saturday. Palomar defeated the North one-seed Sam Mateo, 5-4, in eight innings on Friday.
