Senator Barbara Boxer’s Office called COS Superintendent/President Randy Lawrence to announce the continued funding for the Upward Bound Program.

“It was thrilling when Senator Boxer’s aid called me to congratulate us on the grant award,” Lawrence said. “This was a very competitive process as the number of funded programs was reduced, the scoring priority changed, and additional requirements were implemented. Our staff worked extremely hard to make sure we were competitive.”

The U. S. Department of Education reported that 18% of programs were not funded, including an estimated 233 currently funded programs. COS has had a successful Upward Bound Program since 1995. The program provides students who are low-income and/or first generation the academic skills and personal support necessary to complete high school and to enter and succeed in a program of post-secondary education. Over 80% of COS Upward Bound graduates have entered public and private colleges throughout the country.

Students in the Upward Bound Program receive regular “in school” academic advising. They also receive assistance with college admission applications and financial aid, year-round tutoring, opportunities to attend workshops and college tours, and much more. Project participants also attend a 6-week Summer Academy held at the COS Campus in Weed.

When the new grant cycle begins on September 1, COS Upward Bound will expand the total number of students served from 65 to 72. It will also add Happy Camp High School as one of the schools it will serve. The other Siskiyou County high schools that will continue to be served by Upward Bound are located in the communities of Dorris, Dunsmuir, Etna, Mount Shasta, Tulelake, Weed and Yreka.

For more information about the Upward Bound Program at COS, call 938-5278 or send an email to upwardbound@siskiyous.edu.

Shasta Lady Bears just over an hour to dispatch the fourth-seeded Modoc Braves, 10-0, in their NSCIF D-V semi-final game on Thursday afternoon at Shastice Park.

The top-ranked Lady Bears put up three runs in the bottom of the first inning, and never looked back. Kayla Spini came to the plate one with out, and didn’t see a pitch close to the plate. If Modoc was thinking Spini was the only Mt. Shasta offense, they were soon schooled otherwise. McKenlee Bryan courtesy ran for Spini. Kathryn Andrus singled, moving Bryan to second base. Ashley Cain stepped to the plate and ripped a double, plating Bryan and Andrus. A Haley Brown single moved Cain to third base. Brown went to second on a passed ball. Cain came home on a ground out by Alex Peruzzi, giving Mt. Shasta a 3-0 lead.

Mt. Shasta struck for three more runs in the fourth inning. With one down, Madeleine Moyer legged out an infield single. Blakeley Bryan put the ball in play, and Modoc committed an error attempting to get Moyer at second base, giving the Lady Bears runners on first and second. Both runners moved up 60 feet on a passed ball. Paige Hough reached on an error that allowed Moyer and Bryan to score. Hough found her way home on a double by Sarti, making it 6-0.

In the fifth inning, Haley Brown reached on a fielder’s choice, went to second on a wild pitch, third on a ground out, and scored on another wild pitch, upping Mt. Shasta’s lead to 7-0.

The Lady Bears put the game away in the bottom of the sixth inning. Hough reached on an error, and went to second base on a passed ball. With one down Spini reached on an error, and Hough went to third base. M. Bryan courtesy ran for Spini. Andrus took a free pass to load the bases. Cain knocked in Hough on a ground out. A base hit by Brown brought home M. Bryan. Alex Peruzzi singled to drive in Andrus, ending the game 10-0 via the mercy rule.

Unofficially, Cain led the Lady Bears at the plate, going 2/4, with a double, a run scored, and three RBI. Brown went 2/3, with a run and an RBI. Spini was 1/2, with two walks (aka pitch arounds). Moyer was 1/2, with a run scored. Andrus went 1/3, with two runs and a walk. Sarti doubled and drove in a run, going 1/4. Peruzzi knocked in two runs, and went 1/4.

Spini notched her 31st win of the season and 94th of her career, allowing two hits, no walks, and striking out seven batters in six innings.

Mt. Shasta (31-3) will host number-two Colusa (16-6-1) at 2:00 pm on Saturday for the D-V championship. Colusa defeated number-three East Nicolaus, 1-0, in eight innings in the other semi-final.

“At the beginning of the year, I think if you said that Mt. Shasta would be third in the Shasta Cascade League, and a number-two seed in the NSCIF D-III playoffs, a lot of people would have been questioning your sanity,” said Bear coach John Cox the day after his team was eliminated from the playoffs by three-seed Willows.

Indeed, the Mt. Shasta Bears baseball team was pretty well beat up in the first part of the season. Paul Thelander went down with an injury, and projected starting catcher Dylan Morris received all of four pitches in a game before injuring his thumb.

The Bears dropped their first four games of the season by a combined score of 34-1. Starting with a shut out win over Rogue River, the Bears played .500 ball for the next eight games.

Then, a perfect game tossed by Dylan Padula against U-Prep started a nine-game win streak. The Bears would not lose again until the final SCL double header against league champion Etna.

Mt. Shasta blasted seven-seed U-Prep in the first round of the playoffs, 14-4, before falling to Willows in the semi-finals 14-2.

Cox takes a long term view towards his team’s performance.

“We are not a baseball team. We are a baseball program,” said Cox. “We are trying to build a little more each year. The program is headed in the right direction, and we exceeded expectations this season.”

Although the Bears are losing several seniors, Cox was excited about how some of the younger players performed.

“Brandon Acord did a good job behind the plate and gained a lot of experience filling in for Morris,” said Cox.

Acord hit .328 this season, with an on-base percentage of .469. He was tied with junior Dylan Padula for the team lead in runs scored (18) and RBI (13). Padula hit .329 for the season. As a pitcher, Padula had a 3-1 record in seven appearances, including the perfect game. He sported a 1.31 ERA, and had 26 strikeouts in 21 1/3 innings.

Also performing well at the plate was sophomore Clay Ferguson, who hit .328 and was tied for third on the team in RBI (12).

For the record , Morris led the Bears in batting average at .377. He also led the team in wins with four.

The Bears finished the season 14-12. Of the 12 losses, seven were to teams that are playing for a NSCIF title this Saturday–twice to D-II Yreka, once to D-III Willows, twice to D-IV Etna, and twice to D-V Fall River.
