Deb Ad300The Yreka Miners boys cross country team won the Lakeview Invitational on Saturday. Isaac Fernandez paced the Miners with a first place finish and new course record of 18:12.7, just under the old record of 18:13. Blake Chitwood was 4th at 19:03.20. Jade Wilder was 13th, Elijah Higelin 15th and Tyler Jones 16th.

The Yreka girls were 2nd. Marron Bahen finished 6th at 24:34.15. Lena Fogle came in 7th (25:04.82). Dusti Luiz was 11th, Kylie Goodrich 20th and Sophia Gliatto 21st.

The strong performance by the Miners is remarkable because they weren’t even scheduled to compete in the meet. Yreka’s first two cross country competitions of the year were canceled due to smoke, including the Yreka Showdown that was planned for Saturday. Coach Pam Borg searched for a replacement meet, and entered the squad in the invite at the last minute. Oh, and the meet was held at an elevation of 6200 feet–around 3500 feet higher than Yreka.

The Miners are scheduled to host a Northern Athletic League meet on Wednesday, smoke permitting.
