YREKA – The Siskiyou Heat U-14 ASA softball team took down the visiting Phoenix Lady Pirates in both games of a twin bill on Saturday, 12-2 and 10-6.
The Heat established its dominance in the bottom of the first inning of game-one, with an eight-run out burst. Lacie Landrum, Emilie Wagy, Katie Brummett, Baylee Harris, Morgan Deany, and Riva Martin all scored, with lead-off hitter Jena Turner crossing the plate twice in the inning.
Landrum led the Heat at the plate in game-one, going 3/3 and scoring two runs. Turner was 2/3, scored two runs, and hit a double. Wagy and Brummett both had two walks and scored a pair of runs, while going 1/2. Martin picked up the win in the circle.
The Heat quickly took control again in game-two, scoring six runs in the first inning for a 6-0 lead. Going into the top of the sixth inning, the Heat led 9-2.
The Lady Prates, however, weren’t quite ready to abandon ship, as they put up four runs to cut the lead to 9-6. Heat relief pitcher Krystal Palmer entered the circle in the sixth to stop the Pirate rally.
The Heat added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score 10-6, and then held the Pirates scoreless in the seventh inning to complete the victory.
The Heat’s Katie Brummett wore out home plate, crossing it three times, while going 3/3 with a double and a walk. Jena Turner was 3/4 and scored a run.
Jeni Cheffey was the starting pitcher and notched the win for the Heat, with Palmer picking up the save.
