impact-conrad.jpgWhen it comes to youth sports, the media gives the larger schools in our area most of the attention. It’s sort of a natural thing. That’s where the most students are, and generally the larger schools are the most accessible. However, when you take the time to check out the outlying schools, you can find some real gems.

One of the most successful teams in the last few years has been the Happy Camp Lady Indians. The girls made it to the section championship last year, and they are 10-2 going into the playoffs this season. On a team full of geriad.jpgtalented players, one of the brightest gems is senior post player Aja Conrad.

I’ve been following Aja’s progress for a while. Last year, Aja was a diamond in the rough. It was obvious she had talent and played well all season, but there was room to grow. This season, Aja has been dominating in the Evergreen League, where she is second in scoring with 15.7 points per game. Not only does Aja average double figures in scoring, but has scored in double figures every game except one. In the season opener against Etna, she had nine points in Happy Camp’s win.

While Aja is racking up the points she’s also cleaning the glass. Rebounding stats aren’t available, but it’s probably safe to say she’s averaging double figures in boards, as well.

I caught up with Aja at the Lady Indians game against Surprise Valley last Friday, a 57-16 blowout. Usually, I wait until after the game to give Impact Awards to be sure not to cause any distraction, but I was pressed for time. So, with some hesitation I took Aja’s picture and gave her an Impact T-Shirt prior to the game. Was she distracted?

I’d say, “No.” All Aja did was score 10 points in the first quarter, and probably haul down an equal number of rebounds, on her way to a 26-point game.

If you get the chance, it’s well worth your time to watch Aja and the talented Lady Indians play hoops. You won’t be disappointed.

The Impact Player Award is given on a monthly basis and goes to Siskiyou County high school athletes, male or female, that have had a significant impact on the success of their team. I select the players based on my own observations, often in consultation with the player’s coaches, as I did this time.

A total of four awards are given each month and are not school specific; they can go to a player at any school that Siskiyou Youth covers. Winners receive Impact T-shirts that were designed by Golden Grotto. The T-shirts and award are cosponsored by Siskiyou Youth and NorCal Classic Hits radio 102.3/101.7.
