nicole-luiz-etna-lady-lions-text-sized.jpgThe Lion Heart Awards are given each month to Etna High School student athletes. The Lion Hearts are chosen based on three main criteria—including on-field performance, attitude, and the desire to succeed.

The female Lion Heart Award winner for March is Nicole Luiz, who plays for the Lady Lions softball team. Luiz leads the team in batting average, at .590. She is second on the team in slugging percentage (.769), fielding percentage (.923), and on-base percentage (.600). In addition, Luiz has a great work ethic, and positive attitude no matter what the circumstance.

In the recent Yreka Gold Nugget baseball tournament, Monday was selected as the MVP, even though his team finished second, a somewhat rare occurrence. All Monday did in the tournament was go 9-10, with two home runs, two doubles, five runs, three RBI, and two steals, in three games, as the lead off hitter. Monday is also very solid defensively, as well as versatile. He has played infield, outfield, pitcher, and catcher at various times this season for the Etna Lions baseball team.

Both Lion Heart Award winners will receive custom made T-shirts from Siskiyou Laser Products, and a pizza and drink from the Etna Deli.
