YREKA – Playing in Yreka because 18” of snow covered their field, the Mt. Shasta Lady Bears swept their double header against the Big Valley Cardinals—winning game-one, 7-3, and game-two 12-2.
In game one, the Lady Bears took the lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning. The Cardinals put three on the board in the top of the third to hold their only advantage of the day, 3-1. Mt. Shasta added a run in both the third and fourth innings to tie it, 3-3, going into the fifth inning.
The Lady Bears put the game away in the fifth inning, when they scored three runs. Mt. Shasta added a run in the sixth to make the final 7-3.
Mt. Shasta was led by Jackie Degray who went 3-for-3, with three doubles, and a run scored. Amber Butts was 2-for-3, with two runs scored. Bella Campbell went 1-for-3 with a double and a run. Valerie Hogan scored a pair of runs and went 1-for-3. Amanda Woods got the 7-inning complete game victory.
The Lady Bears set the tone early in game two. The Cardinals failed to reach base in the top of the first. Kayla Emerson led off the bottom half for Mt. Shasta and was hit by a pitch. After stealing second and third, Emerson scored on a wild pitch. The next batter struck out, but Emma Taylor got things going again with a base knock.
Taylor swiped second and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Sammy Reed ripped an RBI triple past the Cardinal third baseman, and down the line to score Emerson. Bella Campbell was up next, and belted a triple to center to drive in Emerson and make the score 3-0, at the end of the first.
Big Valley notched a run in the top of the second to make it 3-1. Mt. Shasta went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the second. The Cardinals went in similar fashion in the top of the third.
Butts led of the bottom half of the third with a double and promptly stole third. Butts scored to make it 4-1, on a sacrifice bunt by Taylor.
Big Valley scored a run on a double steal in the top of the fourth inning, and Hogan scored for the Lady Bears on a Cardinal error. Mt. Shasta led 5-2 going into the fifth.
Big Valley failed to score in the top of the fifth, but Mt. Shasta broke it wide open in their half of the frame. Butts led off with a three-bagger down the left field line and scored on an error. Taylor reached on an error and then scored on a throwing error after Hogan singled. The Lady Bears led 7-2. Hogan scored when Campbell reached via an error.
In her only at bat, Kismet Prosper singled to right field and picked up an RBI, when Campbell scored to make it 9-2. Prosper stole both second and third base, and scored on a wild pitch, to make the score 10-2.
The Cardinals managed to get their first two runners on base on walks, in the sixth inning. Emerson struck out the third hitter of the inning, but hit the next batter to load the bases. Then, the Lady Bears turned a sweet double play to end the threat. A Cardinal Batter hit the ball back towards Emerson, who then threw home to Taylor for an out. Taylor rifled the ball to first for the final out of the inning.
Emerson led off the bottom of the sixth with a single, stole second, and went to third on a wild pitch. Emerson scored on a single by Butts. Butts moved to second base, when Taylor grounded out. Butts moved up to third on a hit by Hogan, and then scored on a wild pitch, with Campbell at bat. That run put the Lady Bears up 12-2 and invoked the 10-run rule for the win.
Butts led the Lady Bears offensive attack, going 3-for-4, with a triple, double, three runs, an RBI, and a steal. Hogan also went 3-for-4, with a double, two runs, and an RBI. Campbell was 1-for-3, with a triple, a run, and an RBI. Emerson went 1-for-3, scoring two runs and recording three swipes. Prosper went 1-for-1, with a run, an RBI, and two steals.
Emerson pitched all six innings for the Mt. Shasta win, giving up two hits, two runs, and one earned run. Emerson struck out four, walked three, and hit two batters.
