Butte Valley v Westwood (8) front

West CoastDORRIS – It took a bit over three hours for the seventh-seeded Westwood Lady Lumber Jacks to make the trip to Butte Valley High School. It took the second-seeded Butte Valley Lady Bulldogs less than eight minutes to make it clear that the ride home for Westwood would be even longer.

Butte Valley (21-0) scored the first eight points of the game. Westwood (11-10) briefly interrupted the avalanche of points with a hoop of its own, about two minutes into the game. The Lady Jacks wouldn’t score again until two and a half minutes into the second quarter. Meanwhile, Butte Valley scored 19 more points in the first quarter to lead 27-2 going into the second frame.

The Lady Bulldogs also scored the first six points of the second quarter and led 35-2, when Westwood finally scored again. Butte Valley led 39-11 at the half, and coach Mike Cross had already used almost his entire bench. At the end of three quarters, the score was 50-16. For most of the fourth quarter, the Lady Bulldogs rarely had more than one starter in the game, and went on to win 57-27.

Kady Porterfield, who led all scorers with 17 points, had 9 points in the first three minutes of the game. Six of those points came on put backs. She had 10 boards in the game. Nicole Levesque had 13 points for Butte Valley, as well as 6 steals and 4 rebounds. Kai Braren put up 6 points and pulled down 6 rebounds. Becky Zarzynski added 6 points and grabbed 5 boards. Beth Holguin scored 6 points. Point guard Gloria Ramirez came up with 9 swipes, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, and 5 points. Sophomore Anna Austin hauled in 4 boards in the fourth quarter.

Butte Valley will host sixth seeded Loyalton (10-7) in the NSCIF D-VI semi-finals on Wednesday, March 3 at 7:00 pm. Loyalton upset third-seeded Providence (18-3) in the second round, 45-43.
