Lady Lions own Biggs Tourney

For the 2nd straight year, the Etna Lions girls basketball teams swept the Biggs Tournament, with both the varsity and junior varsity squads repeating as champions.

The varsity team defeated Biggs in the championship game, 42-35. Cassidy Gilmore and Caitlin Bennett each scored 10 points.

Gilmore was tourney MVP. Bennett and Halliday Hubbard were selected All-Tourney.

The Lions downed Portola 50-30 in the semifinal. Hubbard  scored 16 points. Bennett and Cailey Rizzardo had seven points a piece.

Etna opened up the tourney on Thursday with a 62-34 thumping of East Nicolaus. Gilmore put up 16, and Bre Buker had 13 points.

The Lions (3-0) will face the Yreka Miners (3-1) on Thursday at 10:00 am, to kick off the Mt. Shasta Holiday Tourney. The Miners finished 2nd at their own tourney on Saturday.

The Etna JVs also played Biggs in their tourney final, but it wasn’t quite as close as the varsity contest, with the Lions winning 51-10. Cleo Smith had 16 points, and Megan Bennett scored 14.

Megan Bennett was tourney MVP, and Kasydi Bennett was selected All-Tourney.

On Friday, Etna defeated Portola 43-32. Smith put up 12 points, and Kasydi Bennett registered 11.

The JV Lions opened up play on Thursday against East Niclolaus, winning 39-24. Megan Bennett went off for a game-high 20 points.

Etna’s JVs will be hosting their own tournament starting on Thursday.
