The Yreka Miners girls and boys teams ran into buzz saws in the championship games of the 63rd annual Yreka Invitational Tournament.

The girls went up against a Del Norte squad that had a plus 91-point scoring differential through two games of pool play. Both the Miners and the Warriors came into the final 2-0, but Del Norte was clearly the top girls team at the tourney.

The Warriors went out to a 16-4 lead at the end of the opening period, and were up 40-10 at the half. It was 50-16 after three quarters, with a final score of 62-23.

Lena Fogle scored eight points for the Miners, and Terra Crawford had six.

Ashley Cox was selected Offensive All-Tourney, and Crawford was Defensive All-Tourney.

The Miners boys took on a high-flying, slam-dunking Crater team that took control early and cruised to victory.

After the first quarter, it was a 28-12 Crater lead. At half, the Comets were up 63-23. With three quarters in the book, it was 82-30, and the final was 89-35.

Jarrett Gaither had eight points for Yreka, and James Ward put up five points.

Gaither was the Miners’ Offensive All-Tourney pick, and Robert Giannini was Defensive All-Tourney.

The 2nd place finishes under new girls head coach Garron Whitehouse and new boys head coach Louie Sanchez were the best in several years for the Miners.

The Lady Miners (3-1) and the Miners (2-2) will be in action again at the Mt. Shasta Holiday Tournament, starting on Thursday.
