Yreka began with heavy defensive pressure and created turnover after turnover in the early going. Yreka had a total of 19 steals in the first half alone.
Carrie Watson started the Lady Miners on the way with a pair of lay ups to put Yreka up 4-0. Orland came back with a bucket and then a 3-ball to take a short lived lead 5-4. Kaitlin Weckerle nailed a 3-pointer and it was 7-5 for Y-Town.
Orland tied it at 7-7, but midway through the first quarter Ashlie Smith made a nice move for a basket that began a 23-0 Yreka run that would last until the
It was more of the same in the second half with the Lady Miners leading 72-51 at the end of the third quarter. Yreka Coach Bill Mittan made ample use of his bench throughout the game, and played his subs exclusively in the final frame. Despite a running clock, Yreka still manage to put up 82 points for an 82-28 win.
Kaitlin Weckerle led the Lady Miners with 14 points, 6 assists, and 4 steals. Alyssa Scala dropped in 14 points, as well as snagging 11 rebounds and 4 steals. Jaylene Phillips added 9 points, with 8 boards and 4 steals. Heather Silva contributed 10 points. Marissa Allen grabbed 8 rebounds, and Carrie Watson had 6 assists.
Courtney Fichter led Orland with 9 points.
Coach Mittan was pleased with his team’s performance following the game. In particular he was happy that the Lady Miners didn’t look past Orland, and came out with playoff intensity right from the start.
“We feel strong for our next game,” said Mittan. “That was the best all around home game we played this year. Everyone played well.”
Next up for the Lady Miners (15-6) is a semifinal contest at second-seeded Gridley on Tuesday, Feb. 26.
